"Signs, signs......"

I know I said that I tend to avoid discussing politics, but I’ve managed to get sucked into the vortex of electoral idiotocracy again. Well, actually it’s not THAT dire. I just have to voice my frustrations about political signage.

How much more beautiful could Chester County be in autumn, if the political campaign signs went down as fast as they went up? We are forced to endure the eyesore of boldly printed slogans and half-hearted platitudes amongst a backdrop of sensuous seasonal earth tones provided by Mother Nature. Despicable.

The biggest irony of all is when you spot the signs from the candidates that ran on platforms of open space and environmental awareness still hanging around. They go from an obvious waste of resources (trees/paper) to just plain littering. Maybe they’ll catch on that electronic media is a far more effective way to reach people anyway.

I challenge all future candidates to take ownership of this problem. Hell, you could make it part of your platform: “Win or lose, I promise to clean up my signs, and the signs of my competition!”

TGB - Great points about the political signs.

There's way too many and then they're slow in being taken down.

Maybe the candidates should be fined (win or lose) if their signs remain up more than 2 days after the election.

Nice blog - keep up the great work.

Take care,

They are just signs? I thought they were part of the autumn flora! They pop up every fall along the roadsides, on the pathways to schools and firehouses like seasonal wildflowers. Me, I take note of the signs that haven’t been removed after the elections are over and remember them when it is election time again. Not necessarily for the candidate whose name emblazons the current signage, but for the political committee they belong to. It is the candidate’s and party’s responsibility to remove the litter.

Even more litter is handed out at the poll entrance. It’s as if we are walking a gauntlet of swordsmen thrusting their spears of paper at us. Those wounded simply drop the offending weapon into the handy trashcan at the door. What a waste of paper and time. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a brain would not have made their decision before Election Day. Do they think we eagerly walk the line, accepting pamphlets and flyers to play “match the names” in the polling booth? Especially pushy and obnoxious poll greeters could even encourage me to change my vote – to the other candidate!
