Eagles shake up coaching staff

The Eagles axed special teams coach Ted Daisher after just one year on the job. The third Eagles special teams coach in three years is long-time veteran Bobby April, most recently with the Buffalo Bills.
The Eagles also axed veteran strength and conditioning coach Mike Wolf.

To take the necessary step forward, the Eagles have to take a step back.
It's time to make the change at quarterback they've put off since Donovan McNabb sustained back-to-back season-ending injuries in 2005-06.
The cold, hard NFL waits for no man. Not even McNabb, who has served the organization well and then some in 11 seasons. The way the Eagles play football, there isn't enough left in the tank of McNabb to reach the next level.
The legs are all but gone, which is evident in the increasing number of errant throws, as well as the inability to scramble out of danger.
When once the game came so easily, it's now a struggle.
Football is a game of inches measured in split seconds.
McNabb has lost a couple of split seconds.
He's been getting by on his past and charm just a little too long.

Also deactivated was Wildcat quarterback Mike Vick, fighting through a quadriceps contusion.
Both players practiced fully Thursday and Friday.

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has been cleared to play against the Broncos this Sunday, not coincidentally with red zone running threat Mike Vick is nursing a strained quadriceps.

While Andy Reid said Westbrook - barring a setback - would be back on the field this weekend, he would not commit to starting the veteran of eight seasons. Reid only would allow that Westbrook would have a package of plays, and that it would be much less than that of rookie starter LeSean McCoy.

"I don’t think it’s fair to him just to throw him in and take every snap," Reid said. "He’ll have his role and we’ll go from there."

The Eagles voted Mike Vick their Ed Block Courage Award recipient for 2009.

The award is named after Ed Block, the late Baltimore trainer, and the winners are supposed to exemplify commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.

Vick is the first Eagle to get the award after being suspended. He wasn't eligible to play until the third game as a condition of his reinstatement following an 18-month stint in federal prison for operating a notorious dogfighting ring.

Eagles-49ers moved to 4:15

With a snowstorm blanketing the area, the NFL pushed back the kickoff time of the Eagles-San Francisco 49ers game from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

The parking lots open at noon, the stadium gates at 3 p.m.

Spectators are encouraged to use public transportation as there will be fewer parking places available due to a 12-to-18 inch snowfall.

The NFL, the Eagles and City of Philadelphia officials all had input in the decision. The Eagles and city workers have to get the field ready to play.

Earlier in the week the NFL approved a similar kickoff change for the Baltimore Ravens-Chicago Bears game in Baltimore, also due to the snow. That kickoff also is at 4:15 p.m. instead of 1 p.m.

The Eagles (9-4) need a win over the 49ers and a little help to clinch a playoff berth Sunday.

The 49ers (6-7) flew in to Philadelphia Friday night. They’re coming off a short work week having defeated the Arizona Cardinals this past Monday.

According to the NFL, Eagles DE Trent Cole and Giants C Shaun O'Hara were each fined $15,000 apiece for fighting Sunday night.
Also Giants DB Aaron Rouse was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness on Eagles WR DeSean Jackson. Rouse "head butted his opponent after the play was over" according to the NFL.
Jackson was not fined for the run-in with Rouse or for the bump celebration with head coach Andy Reid. But Jackson was fined $5,000 for a uniform violation.

Andy Reid opened his press conference Wednesday morning explaining that no Eagle had been ruled out for Sunday's game with the 49ers.
Not running back Brian Westbrook, coming back from multiple concussions, and not rookie WR Jeremy Maclin, who tore a tendon in his foot.
But Maclin and tight end Brent Celek, who wrenched his back coming to attention at a team meeting, weren't slated to practice Wednesday afternoon.
For now Westbrook will practice with the scout team, the head coach finessing around the logjam his presence would compete in an already crowded backfield with LeSean McCoy, Leonard Weaver and Eldra Buckley. The Eagles have won four straight games with those players.
"He literally couldn't do anything for a couple of weeks so you just can't throw him back in," Reid said of Westbrok. "He's still taking the concussion tests. He's better but not all the way completely cleared there."
Reid said Celek would play despite the sore back.

Andy Reid got some pretty outraged reporters to believe the Eagles would go back to work on their tackling in the wake of their mostly pitiful lack of tackling in the win over the Giants.
Told the press he might even take out the tackling mats - padded mats to cushion falls - to get it right.
What the knuckleheads didn't hear was the biggest offenders were the veterans who play regulalrly. Reid didn't name names but Quintin Mikell, Asante Samuel and Will Witherspoon should would like to have the Giants game back.
Think Reid would expose any of those guys to tackling drills on mats? Thank you.
Truth be told, Reid still is second-guessing his decision to have Shawn Andrews run gassers at training camp. Andrews' back was fine through the minicamps and the offseason work, you know. Sure enough it was the gassers - series of sprints where you run to one side of the field, bend over and touch the ground and run back - that put Andrews back on the operating table again.

Eagles safety Quintin Demps said he was fined a total of $12,500 for hits in the second and third quarters in the win over Atlanta this past Sunday. Demps was billed $7,500 for roughing the quarterback, as he hit Chris Redman in the face. And Demps got fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness. Both were the type of aggressive penalties the coaches prefer over the dumb mistakes.

Reid's contract

The Eagles put out a statement late Sunday afternoon after reports surfaced that Andy Reid’s contract could be extended this week.
“We’re aware of the reports regarding Andy Reid’s contract,” the statement read. “The organization has acknowledged earlier that it expects to extend his contract at some point in the near future. Beyond that the organization has no further comment.”
The Eagles defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-7 at the Georgia Dome.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Reid is the next in line as far as contract extensions in the Eagles organization.
Reid has this year and another left on his contract.

Andy Reid is the next in line for a contract extension with the Eagles according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Though the Eagles didn't immediately confirm the report, Eagles president Joe Banner suggested earlier this season he didn't see a scenario in which Reid's pact wasn't extended. Reid has this year and next left on a deal worth about $5 million annually.

Good news for tight end Alex Smith and center Jamaal Jackson, who happened onto DeSean Jackson's celebratory spike in the season opener at Carolina.
Their $10,000 fines were reduced to $7,000 and $5,000, respectively. Wide receiver Kevin Curtis had his $10k fine taken totally off the books.
Running back Brian Westbrook (concussion) worked out Thursday before getting a bite to eat.
And DeSean Jackson spoke to the media only long enough this morning to say he felt "good."
Also the Eagles are leery of crowd noise at the Georgia Dome.

McNabb likes Iverson signing - just not enough to buy season tickets

Donovan McNabb doesn't have Sixers season tickets.
And that probably won't change even though he thinks the signing of veteran guard Allen Iverson is a good thing.
"It's only going to improve their frontcourt and backcourt," McNabb said. "It's going to help them in many ways."
