The party includes movies at all theaters in the city.<br /><div align="center"><strong>50 YEARS AGO - 1958</strong></div>Santa Claus pulled a “superman’’ stunt by visiting children of two communities almost simultaneously for Christmas parties. There were some 250 youngsters at Lennox Park Firehouse and a similar number at the Trainer Fire Co. All were entertained with Punch and Judy Shows and Santa listened to all their Christmas wishes. Cartoons were shown to both groups of children.Manuel Martin Oliver, 67, of 18 S. 13th St., Darby, a former councilman and school director, died at Doctor’s Hospital in Philadelphia. He and his wife, the former Lillian Mederos, planned to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this week. Intermediate Girl Scout Troop 542 of Upland elected Sandra Mundy as its chairman and Ellen Zoranski as vice chairman.<br /><div align="center"><strong>25 YEARS AGO - 1983</strong></div>Police say they have cracked a theft ring that has made off with more than $10,000 in copper welding cable over the past four months from the Marcus Hook refinery of Sun Oil. A Linwood man was arrested and charged in the thefts.Five Chester High School janitors were warned to clean up their acts or face dismissal. There is a vaudeville and moving picture show for four or five thousand Chester youngsters from 1 until 11 p.m. as part of the Chester Civic Council’s drive for the Christmas Fund annual Christmas Party for the city’s unfortunate youngsters.The ambulance of the Marcus Hook Fire Co. No. 1 continues to keep busy. Yesterday it was summoned to Ninth and Green streets to take a man to Chester Hospital where he was treated for acute alcoholism. Shoppers in the downtown section will be permitted to park for two hours in the central zone on orders of Mayor William Ward Jr. “I thoroughly realize that a woman requires more than one hour to make her purchases and especially during the Christmas holidays,” he said. “The police will forget the one-hour parking rule but will continue to enforce the law on the two-hour privilege.”A Leiperville man is in Taylor Hospital recovering the effects of exposure to the cold. He was found by Ridley Township police lying in the street frozen stiff. He was taken to the hospital apparently dead, however, he responded to treatment and is recovering satisfactorily.<br /><div align="center"><strong>50 YEARS AGO – 1958</strong></div>A $200,000 fire destroyed the Bargain City USA store in Woodlyn. The blaze was blamed on faulty wiring. It was called the worst fire in Ridley Township in eight years, John J Kelly, a Chester businessman, was elected president of the Irish American Association of Delaware County. Dennis Sullivan, a Chester printer, was the previous president and had served three terms. Sullivan will now be vice president.Famed movie director Cecil B. DeMille of Hollywood is a former cadet at Pennsylvania Military College in Chester.<br /><div align="center"><strong>25 YEARS AGO – 1983</strong></div>Springfield Republican Party Chief Charles Sexton Jr. has taken legal action charging that he and his wife were sickened by fumes from a family generator on their motor home. He asked borough council to hire four extra policemen for the two weeks before and two weeks after Christmas. Thompson of the Eighth Ward, a member of the board, said all heating systems in the schools will be inspected and upgraded if necessary.<br /><div align="center"><strong>75 YEARS AGO – 1933</strong></div>Forced to vacate their home because of arrearages in their building and loan assessments, a Lester couple and their children of Wyandotte Street were compelled to take up their residence in a cow shed. The man and his wife are “old country’’ folk and after he lost his job he was unable to keep up with loan payments. Chester welfare authorities have been providing the family with food.Mr. and Mrs. Richmond Ferguson and their family of Essex Avenue, Lansdowne, left to spend the winter at their home in Coral Gables, Fla., They plan to return to Lansdowne in May.<br /><div align="center"><strong>50 YEARS AGO – 1958</strong></div>The milk drinking burglars have shifted operations to Springfield. Four homes in the same section have had milk stolen. Previously homes in Ridley Township Ridley Park, Tinicum and Prospect Park were hit. Now homes on Springhaven Road, Springfield, were victimized.Three of Delaware County’s best-known citizens have undertaken a campaign suggesting everyone in the county mail their Christmas cards and packages early. The three are Chester Mayor Joseph Eyre, Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Danny Murtaugh and Cleveland Indians first baseman Mickey Vernon.<br /><div align="center"><strong>25 YEARS AGO – 1983</strong></div>The 2,600 students at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Marple boycotted lunch in the school cafeteria because they do not like new rules instituted. New rules dictate that students must sit in assigned sections and their food is served table by table. Meeth was rousted out of a deep slumber by a man from Marcus Hook who appeared at the police station and wanted to know if police had any knowledge of a lost boy who was somewhat out of sorts. The man said his son had not been home that night and it was the first time this happened. Sgt. Meeth asked for a description of the lad. His father said the lost child was 28 years old and the sergeant nearly dropped to the floor. He promised, however, to send the “old kid’’ home if he was found by police.Some of the clerks in retail stores in Chester want the Business Men’s Association to tackle the subject of real importance, namely shorter work hours. One clerk said he begins work at 6 a.m. Saturday and is in the store until 11 p.m. at night. For this he says he receives 9 cents an hour. The business association has decided to look at the situation.<br /><div align="center">75 YEARS AGO – 1933</div>Dr. Charles A. Ernst of Ridley Park has been named the new administrator of Federal Works in Delaware County.Frank Tollin, the Chester furniture merchant, has gone to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the winter. His store remains open during his absence.<br /><div align="center"><strong>50 YEARS AGO – 1958</strong></div>An impromptu dance session participated in by about 30 juveniles was broken up by Chester police in a store at 1811 W. 3rd St. The jukebox was going full blast when Patrolmen Vincent Boles and Richard Vincent entered the store that was operated by Edward Jones. They said he did not have a proper license.An old-time minstrel show was presented at the Parkside Firehouse by members of the fire company and its auxiliary. Endmen for the show were John Ford Jr., Jacob Fry, Al McVey, Donald Gray, Francis Ryan and Milt Howett.Vincent A. Tancredi, a clerk at the Chester Post Office, showed off the new 25-cent U.S. Savings Stamps that are for sale. The new issue marks the first major change in design of such stamps since 1942.<br /><div align="center"><strong>25 YEARS AGO – 1983</strong></div>A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with three separate theft incidents involving Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon. There are 30 churches and each church has within it various boards, societies and auxiliaries each with its own officers so that there are many wheels within the big wheel. One Chester church has 14 boards and auxiliary societies while the average is eight to 10 in each church. Two boys from Linwood were charged with fastening a cord across the sidewalk just high enough from the ground to strike an ordinary tall person in the face. The chord struck a man on the bridge of his nose and almost knocked him from his feet. The boys were fined $2.40 each after they were arrested by Constable O’Donnell. Hopefully the arrest will break up this dangerous practice. <br /><div align="center"><strong>75 YEARS AGO – 1933</strong></div>The sophomore class at Ridley Park High School was in charge of an assembly. Among those taking part in the program were Mary West, Claire Borrell and George Derbyshire.Cadets from Pennsylvania Military College in Chester received a rousing reception after its football team held the football team from Army scoreless for three a quarters. Chelton Road, Parkside, has been selected to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” She a senior at Grove City College and is a graduate of Swarthmore High School.Seventeen silver dollars were taken in a burglary at the home of Nicholas DiPaulo at 225 W. Washington Ave., Clifton Heights. Chet’s Beauty Shop is opening at 119 Fairview Road, Woodlyn.Mrs. Maude Comegys retired as a Chester Hospital housekeeper after a 25-year career. Kirk is having an arc light erected in his drug store at Seventh Street and Concord Avenue, Chester, to replace the present gas lights. Police Chief Ernest Fleming said the vandals used stones and bricks to smash the windows. They would be greatly pleased if the police would stop it.Residents of Upland have grown weary traveling over rough or muddy streets to get to and from Chester. A telephone message asking for the patrol wagon was received at the Chester City Hall, but Chief Barry said he had no authority to permit wagons to leave the city limits.A number of improvements are being made at the Wallingford train station. There are several first-class springs on the property and as the railroad company has no special use for the water, it has been a matter of some trouble for years to get rid of them. They have laid a complete system of drains under the station platform that will rapidly conduct them away. New platforms have been built and cement walks laid.The past few weeks have been among the busiest at Chester Hospital with accidents and surgical procedures. He speaks of the hardships and discomforts in Alaska and says he will stay home in Chester.Some time ago a barge loaded with coal sank in the creek near the coal wharves of the Eddystone Manufacturing Co. The barge contained about 260 tons of coal. Capt. Williams has been engaged to get the coal out of the creek.<br /><div align="center"><strong>75 YEARS AGO – 1933</strong></div>Two Swarthmore borough policemen admitted to borough council that they were guilty of having taken a bribe of three sacks of liquor from the driver of a rum truck to allow the truck to pass through the borough unmolested after they had stopped it. Borough official said they will investigate the matter before they come to a decision on any disciplinary action.<br /><div align="center"><strong>50 YEARS AGO – 1958</strong></div>Patricia Ann Petrikin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Petrikin of Blackthorne Road, Wallingford, was given a surprise shower by Mrs. Thomas Lynch and Mrs. Arthur Cardwell. Miss Petrikin is to wed 2nd Lt. John Donald Humphreys Jr. of Garden City this month.Chester Patrolman William Hamilton 30, of 611 Norris St., broke a toe in his right foot when he stumbled getting into a police cruiser. He was treated at Chester Hospital.A burglar who broke into the Food Fair on West Ninth St., Chester, escaped with cigarettes, meat and ladies stockings but did not go near a safe in the office. Walter Howie of Brookhaven, manager of the store, said the robbery was discovered by Joseph Cudd and Joseph Damer, both of Upland, both store employees.<br /><div align="center"><strong>25 YEARS AGO – 1983</strong></div>Stephen King has been elected president of the Northley Junior High School Band in Aston. Amy Maroney is vice president and James Vershinski is student conductor.Five Delaware County men, all members of Local 542 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, have been cleared of mail fraud in connection with charges they pocketed $9,000 earmarked for their unemployed brothers in the union.
