"We're very selective"

There is a restaurant nearby that recently reopened as an "upscale" version of itself following an extensive renovation after many years as a simple diner. I would have stopped for a meal, except I was blatantly discriminated against. They impose a surcharge of 10% to anyone that doesn't work at a particular company, a very, very large firm that just happens to be across the street. They even have a sign outside to discourage would-be customers unless they work at said company. It says "10% discount for XXXXX employees".
I guess if they don't want me, I don't want them, and I sure won't recommend that place to anyone. The new paint, polish, architecture, and menu means nothing if the management chooses
to turn people away because of where they work.
At the old diner it was never an issue.

You are so right. I also have not eaten there for the same reason. I also have not gone to stores (like fast food, flowers) in our community that give a discount to school district employees and not the rest of us in the community. In fact one fast food store gives the company you spoke of a discount.

You know, I saw that sign and thought it was basically a surcharge for anyone not working there. Also wondered if I was just resentful. Well so far at least two people have agreed with me. I do not go there anymore either. Wonder if they read blogs?

I'm glad others wrote that this particular restaurant isn't the only one. They were not the first either....they are merely doing what the rest are, to keep up in these challenging economic times. They are lovely people with excellent food and service. I understand you not patronizing on the principles that you believe in, but how else to compete when your competition is posting that they will accept the coupons from your establishment(name included) on their marquee? Walk in the shoes of a small business for a day, then count your blisters.

My English wife has a term I think applies here - "bloody-minded". And that is for the Columnist, not the resturant.

I don't work for "that" company, but I have eaten at the resturant several times. I have noticed the sign as I walked in and it never occured to me that I was paying some wag at "that' company out of my paycheck. Still don't.

I have seen similar discounts throughout all my worldly travels (20 years in the Navy, thank you.) Here is some inside intel for you... when a company offers such a discount, they don't raise the rest of the prices to make up for it! They consider the percent "lost" to actually be returned due to more business, as the employees choose to spend their money at the business, rather than take it to another company. What a concept! Practiced world-wide, by the way.

As a born-and-bred American, another word comes to mind - jealous.
