What about that music venue?

As people may have heard or read, a Thai food restaurant got approval the other night for a liquor license, meaning the restaurant will be replacing Rex's Bar on West Gay Street, unless some unforeseen circumstance occurs.

After the meeting, though, I think a lot of people wondered, myself included, what the status is of the planned music venue and theater Donald Moore, the owner of Rex's, wants to open on East Market Street.

Bill Shehwen , Moore's attorney, has mentioned for a previous article I did that Moore would consider transferring the liquor license at Rex's to the new venue. But during the hearing Monday, Shehwen stayed away from discussing Moore's intentions, including the fate of the liquor license at Rex's. All he said is that the license will not be sold or put into safe keeping.

Shehwen said he would try to give me an interview with Moore next week, so maybe I can have some more details by then.

One would have to think that Rex's 2 will be opening on market street at some point soon. I don't get council rejecting the license request the first time if they ultimately approve one for the Thai place. Whatever happened to BYOB's anyway? This should certainly have been an option here. Common sense would suggest that it takes more than restaurants with liquor sales or without to continue the positive things that we have seen here of late. A little diversity is needed and soon.....before someone opens ANOTHER sports bar!

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for the powers that be in that town to add any kind of “diversity” to the downtown area or any of the town in general. As a former resident of WC for almost thirty years I saw the creeping Gentrification of Chester County first hand and watched West Chester turn into your standard Yuppie Hell. If those guys have their way there will be nothing but your standard Strip Mall/Sterile stores, BAR & RESTURANT type hang outs for the bored Yuppies to spend their money on over priced finger food and sub par beer and the streets will shut down by 10pm on Fri and Sat. nights. The last thing these guys want is to have the town turn into what it was back in the 70’s and early 80’s i.e. a FUN COLLEGE town with character.

I was back there for the first time in years a few weeks ago and as far as WC the more it changes the more it stays the same. I did go over to Kennett though and that town is GREAT, what a turn around!! The town, Kennett that is, still has its character and has done a lot to turn the downtown around all with out sucking the soul out of it like they did to Waste Chester in order to make it a “BETTER PLACE”.

Perhaps it's easy to throw darts at WC while your "high" in the rockies, but I live here presently and see good things happening. Blaming the "powers that be" is a cop out. This is not Oz and there is no man behind the curtain. If you give people something they want, they will support it. WC Growers Market is proof of that. Diversity already exists in shops such as Malena's, 5 Senses, Eclat and nich. Hardly standard strip mall fare and this trend is likely to continue. A recent Money magazine poll noted that WC's population is 61% single. The majority of which are likely younger people. Hardly the demographic that constitutes "Yuppie Hell". I didn't live here in the 70's and 80's either, but while it may have been fun, I've got to say this sounds a bit wistful like a "things were so much better back then, when I was young" kind of thing. This kind of rhetoric is frightening and speaks volumes. "The more WC changes, the more it stays the same?" Another cliche I don't subscibe to. WC, like everything else is ever evolving. Some see it, while it is completely lost on others. Likely those that are put off by change.
Enjoy the mountain air of the Rockies. I'll be here in WC..... not holding my breath for change.

I'M OUTTA HERE...ENJOY THE PROGRESS!!!!!!!!! said...

Well, say what you want Changling, but High in the Rockies does have a point. I have lived in The Chester County over thirty years and have also seen what he has. I originally came here in the early seventies and settled here after I did my undergraduate work at WCU. West Chester and Chester County used to be a civil and somewhat easy going area with a great colonial/Rustic feel that is until about the mid eighties. With that change I have seen a trickle and then a torrent of arrogant and nose in the air types such as you flow into West Chester and the county. You know the type?? Those who down play or condescend to those of us Rustic and uncultured locals that lament the passing of an era or when we find fault with the Big City inconsideration that Urban Sophisticates bring with their SO CALLED progress and diversity.

Have no fear though this backwards old timer, that would be me, will not stand in the way of your progress and sophistication as I will soon be selling my West Chester home to one of your “YOUNG URBAN PROFESSIONALS” at a premium and be moving out to Lancaster where people still practice the “OH SO QUAINT” art of civility and neighborliness that has all but disappeared in the Chester County area. I’m betting that you got a vested interest in ALL THIS PROGRESS…right???
Enjoy the traffic, the Chardonnay sipping hordes of sophisticated sweethearts and of course the change and progress. I’m outta here!!!

Gee thanks Pal!!! I will also enjoy friendly people, low crime, 300 days of sun a year, affordable real estate, lack of congestion, a good and MAINTAINED road system, lower taxes, transparent and responsive local government, etc.
Sorry, but it’s that kind of superior Nouveau Riche attitude that chased me away from Waste Chester, but then again, a cop out and cliché lover like myself just can’t deal with REAL PROGRESS and all the great things that come with it.

i'm outta here.....I sense anger issues, but nonetheless I have to give credit where it's due. I was part of the trickle in the mid eighties, so you nailed that part. Unfortunately that's the only thing you got right and it seems you completely missed my point. You used the word "lament", which is akin to regret. Well, IMHO life is to short for that. Change is omnipresent and yes that includes Lancaster county. You also refered to yourself as a "backwards old timer". This kind of labeling is at the heart of the problem. People of all stripes should be able to peacefully coexist in a urban setting like WC and I think to a large degree they do. You will always be able to find obnoxious people and this crosses all lines including socioeconomic. As far as my having a vested interest, i've none more than you. As you so aptly put when you mentioned "selling your house in WC, at a PREMIUM to one of my YOUNG URBAN PROFFESSIONALS". There you go labeling again. Be careful when you climb down off that high horse of yours that your nose doesn't stick up in the air.
.....and oh, BTW "i'm outta here" don't let the door hit you on the...........I think you know the rest.

"high in the Rockies", it's time to wake up and smell the Coors light. With an overwhelmingly negative attitude like the one that you seem to have it's less likely you'll be surrounded by "friendly people" out West and more likely you'll be miserable out there in a few more years. I'm sure you think it's completely normal to point the finger at others and call them names, such as "nouveau riche", but this just proves my point that condescension comes in all forms and from people of all types. As far as transparent and responsive local gov't, this is a fairy tale my friend. Affordable real estate.....you can find plenty of that everywhere these days. Low taxes......only three things in life are guaranteed. Death, taxes and ignorant people. Low crime.....for it's population density WC is statistically among the lowest. 300 days of sun a year.......I hope your using plenty of sunscreen. A good and MAINTAINED road system.....WOW that really gets my juices flowing. Yeah, it sounds like you have it all out there in the Rockies, so enjoy and try to lose some of that anger, but whatever you do please don't move back here. By moving you removed some of the "WASTE" from West Chester.

First of all, your email only shows more of that “SUPERIOR Know it all attitude” that you Mainline Wannabes have and then you beat up “I’m Outta Here” because he doesn't want to deal with your kind any more and doesn’t buy into your version of The East Coast SHANGRALA i.e. WC…typical. You also show your total LACK OF KNOWLEDGE of anything outside of PA and Waste Chester in general. Let me guess, you’re like most back there that have never been past the Mississippi and think America ends at Ohio??

//"high in the Rockies", it's time to wake up and smell the Coors light.//

For your information the rest of America drinks that swill not the majority of Colorado locals. There are too many good local Micros to enjoy than taking that one step below Budweiser. Is that what their calling premium beer at the BAR AND RESTAURANT these days?

////With an overwhelmingly negative attitude like the one that you seem to have it's less likely you'll be surrounded by "friendly people" out West and more likely you'll be miserable out there in a few more years. ///

Once again WRONG!!! I’ve been here for almost a decade with no plans of leaving. I live in a place where people back there ie PA slave away at the GRIND that you call life, endure the crap weather, and all the friendly souls there so they can visit here once a year. Most of the people that live here are LIKE ME and left where came from to get away from the DRUDGERY that you call life and people stacked on top of people. Meaning, I am surrounded by like minded people.

//I'm sure you think it's completely normal to point the finger at others and call them names, such as "nouveau riche", but this just proves my point that condescension comes in all forms and from people of all types.//

Whatever Pal, read your previous emails and you tell me what tone they have.

// As far as transparent and responsive local gov't, this is a fairy tale my friend.//

Oh really, I know the mayor here by name and all the members of town council…how bout you??? I and the rest of the town I live in can account for ALL tax dollars spent. I have said before and I will say it again that the concept of a COMMONWEALTH is founded on Graft and Corruption. Ya gotta love those old horse and buggy roads that got paved over and then used by thousands a day and just never seem to get fix or up graded. Kinda like the PA turnpike, one of the first super highways in the country, but still one of the worst roads in the nation.

//Affordable real estate.....you can find plenty of that everywhere these days.//

That may be so, but not with the weather and the views I got. And that is not what I hear about the price of land in Chester County these days. Good thing you got in back in the 80’s and contributed to the escalating real estate values. Hey, at least no malcontents like me will be able to move in next to you. The last thing you want to have is “THE HELP” moving in next door and ruining the White Bread third Rate Main Line that Chester County is becoming.

//Low taxes......only three things in life are guaranteed. Death, taxes and ignorant people.//

The amount of taxes that I pay here in a Mtn state are fraction of what I paid in PA (THE LAND OF TAXES). Are you including yourself under the heading of Ignorant people?? At least when it comes to knowledge of the rest of America outside of Pennsylvania??

//Low crime.....for it's population density WC is statistically among the lowest.//

When I was in PA last the headline outta Philly was “ SIX MURDERS IN SIX HOURS”. Give it time that cesspool and its problems will come to Chester County along with your beloved Progress.

//Yeah, it sounds like you have it all out there in the Rockies, so enjoy and try to lose some of that anger, but whatever you do please don't move back here.//

We do and we know it!!! We are more than happy to let all you East Coast Know it alls think that the Rockies are an Arctic Wasteland as it keeps you all there..where you belong with the other sweethearts. No anger here, living in a place like this takes it outta ya. The only time my PA ATTITUDE comes out is when Urban Sophisticates come out here and treat people the way you do back there. Let me assure you the Code of the West still exists and we take your inconsideration PERSONALLY.

//By moving you removed some of the "WASTE" from West Chester.//

More of that Pseudo Mainline Arrogance and superiority!! You can have that cesspool of mediocrity, just make sure if the day comes that you want to find out what the west and the Rockies are really like first hand , please leave your Third Rate yuppie elitist attitude there in WASTE CHESTER as most of us here left the East to get away from that attitude and people like you.

At first I thought that you were just "high" in the Rockies, now I realize that the drugs that you need can only be prescribed by an M.D. For someone who claims to be so well adjusted out West and all, you come across as an angry malcontent and this is after almost ten years of that serene lifestyle you keep bragging about. As far as "I'm outta here" why don't you let him speak for himself. Or are you one of those arrogant voice of the people types? A word of advise, stick to TRYING to answer posts that are directed to you, as you seem to have considerable trouble handling that as it is. If you think that I come across as a "superior know it all attitude" type, maybe that's because I can string two coherent sentences together without resorting to the typical testosterone infused invective that you spew "PAL". Now........ on to addressing some of the MORE ignorant things included in your latest diatribe.... but first wipe that spittle out of the corner of your mouth, take a deep breath of that clean mountain air and relax "BUDDY". I figure if you can call me "PAL", I can call you "BUDDY".

1. The Coors light comment...... this is almost to easy. FYI, good micro brews can be had all over the country. This was not meant as an indictment on the beer options out West, but the mere fact that I have to spell that out to you says it all.

2. You and your "friendly crew".......and I quote "Most of the people that live here are LIKE ME and left where (they?) came from to get away from the DRUDGERY that you call life". OK, I see. You have a bunch of unhappy people unable to make a decent life where they are, so they blame it on their surroundings, form a deep seated hate for those around them (i.e. Mainline Wannabees & Urban Sophisticates) and flee to a "SHANGRI-LA" (note proper spelling) out West. You go on.... "Meaning, I am surrounded by like minded people". You mean to tell me they rounded up all the negative creeps and malcontents and stuck them in Colorado? Wow what a concept! I think the Rocky Mountain state deserves better, but that's just my opinion.

3. As far as name calling and overall nastiness are concerned. YOU, even trying to glean my "tone" in previous emails (I think you meant posts?) is laughable. Before you try to read between the lines, it helps to be able to read AND comprehend the actual LINES first. BTW.......I've no plans of emailing you anytime soon.............. BUDDY.

4. On transparent and responsive local gov't......Politicians are all cut from the same cloth. It's a power game East or West. Whether the stage is big or small, so if you want to believe that yours out there are the type you'd like to have over for a bucket a chicken and a couple of ice cold Coors lights (my bad..I meant micro brews) knock yourself out HOMBRE. As an aside I do know the mayor's name as well as the members of council here in WC, but I won't be breaking bread with them anytime soon. About the condition of the roads.......you seem obsessed with this.....I'm wondering the reason for this strange fixation.....Are you a cab driver or something? I've run into a few angry cab drivers in the past, so that makes sense.

5. Regarding property values......another quote from your fount of wisdom. "Hey, at least no malcontents like me will be able to move in next to you. The last thing you want to have is THE HELP moving in next door". My last comment about you being a cab driver aside.....I seriously doubt that in your vocation of choice you have ever been refered to as "THE HELP". I'd be willing to bet that "THE HELP" aren't as angry as you, but what do I know I don't need HELP. You, on the other hand.........you do need help..... and fast!

6. RE: Taxes....... I pay what I consider to be my share, and I don't think it's an unreasonable amount. More importantly I don't whine about it like you and so many others. Now, I'd rather pay none, but they haven't even figured out how to do that in Shangri-La(Colorado).

7. About crime.........Talking about Philly as it relates to crime in Chester County shows how asinine your thought process is. If we follow that Western logic of yours.......let's see.....back in the seventies when organized crime was king in Philly, where was the Chester County Cosa Nostra? Well genius, you lived here then. Was WC a hotbed for organized crime? No, I don't think so! Truth is there has been and always will be crime and gun related violence in MAJOR cities like Philly. It doesn't even spill out of certain neighborhoods into others much less spread all the way out to the furthest reaches of the suburbs. By what you've said previously, it's quite possible that you lived in Shangri-La when that whole Columbine thing took place. A different kind of violence, but it has the same result. Guns, specifically hand-guns are meant to kill people, or at least put the fear of god into them. People shouldn't be surprised when gun violence results in death, they SHOULD be surprised and outraged when people like you are allowed to possess guns. Which brings me to my final point...........and I quote "The only time my PA ATTITUDE comes out is when Urban Sophisticates come out here and treat people the way you do back there. Let me assure you the Code of the West still exists and we take your inconsideration PERSONALLY". Whoa, Quick Draw.... easy cowboy! The Code of the West.......what's that shoot first and ask questions later? I'm a scared...let me tell ya........I take back all those mean and nasty things I said about ya. LOL.... YOU ARE A COMEDIAN and you don't even know it! Keep that shtick out West Cowpoke. We don't want your kind out here. You wouldn't even be good HELP....you're to angry.

BLAH...BLAH...BLAH... I'm glad you enjoy my shtick pally. I'm sorry and I apologize as I was all wrong and you were right about everything …except of course all that you “don’t know” about the rest of this great country. You should try to see more of America outside of the Tri State Area, but then again don’t feel bad as are you like most back there that thinks that PA., DE, and NJ are the end all and be all of the world. How sad.

I bet you really kill ‘em down at the country club with your witty non sequiturs and snappy cliché ridden come backs don't you Pal/Buddy?

Enjoy the homogenized wasteland that you and your Ilk have turned Waste Chester into as you and your “OH SO” self important and self absorbed friends sip your over priced Zinfandel at the ONE OF MANY Bar and Restaurant clones all the while lamenting why the world doesn't revolve around you.

Just remember, when you get tired of the grind, crappy weather, unfriendly people, endless commutes on gridlocked un-maintained roads (that your high taxes are supposed to pay for) while serving your Corporate Masters. I'll be out here living life by MY RULES and loving life because I’m NOT living the bland hell that you call reality.

Over and Out,
Filled with ANGER and loving life High in the Rockies…thank god it ain’t PA.

Ps. I got you going didn’t I Pally?? You arrogant Pseudo east coast Urban Sophisticates are so predictable.

OK "high", or maybe we should call you "SIX GUN" from now on. Just curious....was your head used as a piñata at one point? The level of stupidity that you've exhibited is usually the result of blunt force trauma. Maybe you got thrown off of one of those mechanical bulls that are so popular out West. Is this another example of my "witty non sequiturs"??? NO, I'm afraid not! These are insults directed at you BUDDY. That seems to be all that's left here, due to the fact that you won't even attempt to address the points made in my last post. My guess is that you probably aren't able to effectively convey through proper use of the English language what's in that clouded mind of yours. You seem to be holding on for dear life to two particular things, so I will address them.

1. The notion that I am someone who has never traveled outside of the Tri State Area, therefore I'm not qualified to comment on life out West. This is some conclusion that you drew based on.........
I don't know what! I've declined mentioning the many places I've lived as well as traveled to both in and out of this great country. This was intentional, so as not to encourage you to continue on the me as "nouveau riche" guy theme. There is no truth to this, because I'm not rich and I'm certainly NOT new. Which should tell you that you're comment about me at the country club is also WAY off base. There you go trying to read between the lines again. Leave the guesswork to somebody else Sherlock.

2. Roads: This seems to be quite a recurring theme and I'm not sure why. Are you a former and disgruntled public works worker in Chester County? You need to come to terms with this obsession and move on to something a little more meaningful.

........while I don't drink it, I do think you deserve a nickel for spelling zinfandel correctly. This was shocking. Also, why always with the BAR and RESTAURANT comments? This is ancient history around here......Oh yeah, so are you. THANKFULLY! As far as thinking the world revolves around me......I think I have a pretty good idea of where I fit into the world at large, but I love it when some mental midget like yourself spouts this kind of nonsense. It just shows how ignorant you are. Remember, don't ASSUME anything and stop guessing. You've already proven that you're no Amazing Kreskin. One last thing.......It's ironic that YOU, the person who previously talked about enacting the "Code of the West" thinks that they got to me. Or, maybe that's just you being funny without realizing it again. I'm not even sure that I should continue with this anymore..... I'm starting to feel like I'm picking on the kid that road the short bus to school and that's not a good feeling. Bring something better next time, or I'm moving on. I'll use a cliché so that YOU understand. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. BUDDY!
