Borough Council's committee meetings were relatively quiet last night. However, an interesting, long-standing issue did pop up. Councilwoman Holly Brown said that she would like council to consider creating a committee to study the parking situation downtown and the attitude of parking enforcement officers. She said a lot of people complain to her when she's working at Kaly, a women's clothing store she owns on West Gay Street, about getting tickets and the parking enforcement officers.
There was also a resident, Bill Mason, who works for WCOJ downtown, that complained about the situation and suggested that something needs to be done.
It's not likely council's going to take up this matter next week during its work session, though. Brown said she wants to discuss the issue at the committee level for one more month, then bring it before the full body.

Although the creation of new committees can make some groan, the idea may be a sound one. Perhaps the new committee could be a comprehensive group that looks not just at parking meter concerns in town but at the new parking garages that will be built dowtown and perhaps managed by the Borough itself. What type of security and fiscal management is planned for the future? Maybe the purview of these subjects already rest with the Parking Committe.
Hopefully this new committee will look into the fraud that's going on with the parking tickets being written illegally in the borough, and correct all the illegally placed parking restriction signs!
I am happy to see Holly Brown take up this issue. I believe the parking department needs to be overhauled from the top down. Holly Brown should have the department clearly state their goals around how they plan to improve the parking situation for the residents and visitors to the borough. They are here to enforce parking regulation to insure an orderly parking situation in the borough. They are not here to write as many tickets as possible and drive visitors and residents out of the borough.
