Lending a helping hand

Sam Dalembert is the only NBA player from Haiti so he has a unique perspective on what his fellow countrymen are going through.

Already one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti has suffered tremendously after being hit by three hurricanes in one month – Fay, Gustav and then Ike.

It plunged the country into chaos as people not only lost homes and possessions, but often didn’t have enough clean water to drink.

Dalembert has helped in the past, donating more than $70,000 to disaster relief in his home country.

But he’s still in the planning stages on this one.

“I’ve been talking to Unicef over there. I’m going to try to do something with them for the young kids. It’s very difficult. The accessibility for things to go out there to the people (is not good). We’ll wait till things calm down and then go out there and really help.”
