MAKING MOVES FOR BRIERE

The Flyers waived both Glen Metropolit and Ossi Vaananen this afternoon in order to make room for the return of Danny Briere tomorrow night.

Both Metropolit and Vaananen make $1 million this season, although Metropolit is signed through next season as well.

If both players go unclaimed, the Flyers will have the ability to send them to the Phantoms of the AHL if need be.

This leaves the Flyers with a few options.

They most likely will send a combination of three of Metropolit, Vaananen, Lasse Kukkonen and Darroll Powe to the Phantoms to clear space for Briere.

Kukkonen makes $875,000, while Powe counts for $450,000 against the cap.

Briere makes $6.5 million and the Flyers need to clear a little more than $2 million to bring him back.

If either Metropolit or Vaananen are claimed off waivers, the Flyers would still get salary cap relief.

Problem is if Metropolit and Powe go to Phantoms, the Flyers will be short one Offensive player.

I hope that messing with the already winning chemistry .. doesnt have a negative effect. If anything.. Briere should go to the Phantoms. I know that Metropolit is not an 80 point per season producer and that he is not even posting hardly the numbers he did the last 2 seasons in Boston.. but .. the TEAM.. TEAM IS WINNING in the last 10 games .. how many have we lost? 3.. in the last 10 we are 7-3-0 .. tied with NJ .. and only Vancouver at 8-2-0 and Detroit 7-2-1 are better. We should not mess with the teams chemistry. I think Briere should start with the Phantoms for a 5 game stint at least to test the groin and also work his way into the lineup. If Metropolit is not producing and Briere is, then send him to the Phantoms after 5 games.

Personally, I believe, of the players mentioned about possibly being sent down to the Phantoms Powe should stay right where he is. Watching him play is sure a treat!! This guy is a quick skater, looks to be a gritty player, and has contributed more than some others have in the form of making their presence on the ice known. Just expressing my spin on this mess.
