NEWELL HITS 1,000
Strath Haven's Calvin Newell went off for 39 points against Haverford last Thursday. Not only was the point total a county-best for the year (Newell previously had scored 38 points three times), the senior guard breached the 1,000 point plateau for his career.
Newell, who has scored 470 points this year for a 31.3 points-per-game average, needed 38 to reach the milestone. Above is a photo of Newell receiving an honorary basketball from Haven coach Steve Lewis. Thank you to Wallingford resident Bob Quinn, who snapped the shot and submitted it to the Daily Times.

they left him in until there was a minute left when they were up 30 points. how classless. Of course Newell can score almost 40 points when hes scoring all of his 4th quarter points against haverford's JV. So classless. They had half the season left for Newell to get to 1,000, but they run up the score so he can get it? And have him pulling 3's over JV kids. I'm sorry but this just angers me that something like this gets positive press
i was at the game too...It was not classless..coach lewis realized that his team was going on a road swing of three games after the hav game... they weren't in full control until he had about 31..so let him get it at home where everyone is supporting and watching him...he's been through more than most and people like you who always look for the negative will always bring people down...the negativity fuels most people into thinking their experts because its the east way out as far as thinking...if you can't fundamentally understand the game it is much easier to criticize...the simpleton's are always gona be in the majority
and i must comment again...he's a kid...he's a kid...he's a kid...he's a kid look how happy he is in the picture..get over the negativity
he's a kid that couldn't handle the fact that it wasn't all about him at Ridley so he went somewhere where he could do whatever he wanted. stop trying to make it look like Calvin Newell is a good story when his teammates cant stand playing with him no matter what team hes on...
