CARROLL, GREEN MOVE ON

To be short and sweet, here's what you should know about Friday night: Archbishop Carroll can win (and will win) with a half-effective D.J. Irving, left.

Absent from the Patriots' two previous outings, Irving was one of several difference makers in their 37-30 win over Holy Ghost Prep in a PIAA Class AAA first-round game. Irving, who didn't score, had four steals, two rebounds and two assists.

But he wasn't alone. Junior Juan'ya Green , right, was wildly effective. He scored 14 points, picking and choosing the best shots to choose in order to maximize his effectiveness. He also had five rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.

Because Irving – limited because of his still-tender hand – wasn't 100 percent, Green took the reins. He was all over the court, soaring from behind to block shots, dishing out eye-popping assists and doing much of the clock-killing dribbling in the game's final minutes.

Ben Mingledough led the way with 15 points and Vince Mostardi had eight to round out the scoring leaders. Needless to say, those who doubted the Patriots because of Irving's hand … think again.

Here are other results from the PIAA Class AAA bracket:
Eastern York 68, Coughlin 42
Dobbins 57, Springfield 52
Mifflinburg 51, Pottsville 38
Abington Heights 58, East Pennsboro 28
Neumann-Goretti 64, Susquehanna Township 45
Holy Redeemer 59, Steel-High 39
Danville 68, Allentown Central Catholic 59
Archbishop Carroll 37, Holy Ghost Prep 30
Lancaster Catholic 52, Pottsgrove 44
York Suburban 61, Johnstown 46
Chartiers Valley 96, Erie Central 66
West Allegheny 42, Hickory 41
West Mifflin 81, Oliver 65
Bradford 45, Trinity 43
Hampton 63, Huntingdon 41
Montour 49, Erie East 42

####################

Next up: Archbishop Carroll vs. Danville
When and where: Tuesday night, TBD
What to know about Danville: The Ironmen went 18-6, have won five in a row and have won an opening-round PIAA game each of the last two seasons. They won Friday night, partly, because ACC showed up late to the game and weren't loosened up. Danville forced 10 first-half turnovers and the rout was on.

QUOTABLE: HOLY GHOST LIKES ITS UNDERDOG LABEL

After Holy Ghost Prep put the finishing touches on Springfield Saturday, it began to settle in that HGP would draw the defending PIAA Class AAA champion in the first round of states.

Needless to say, the Firebirds weren't thrilled with that prospect. Fair enough, right? The District One champion deserves a little better a draw than Carroll. But that's how the bracket worked last year, too. Another year, another bracket ... In hindsight, perhaps PIAA should employ a power-rankings system for states.

In any case, here's some of what those around Holy Ghost had to say about Carroll:

COACH TONY CHAPMAN
"The shoe will be on the other foot, too, a little bit. More will be expected of Carroll. Even though we are district champs, we'll probably go into that game as an underdog."

"It is what it is. In a perfect world, you have a seeding thing with the PIAA and maybe you play someone not as dominant. We'll look at them and get ready to go. We're going to play hard and we're going to play a real good basketball game. If that's good enough to win, great. If it's not good enough to win, than it's not. We're going in confident."

SENIOR GUARD MICHAEL BYRNE
“We look forward to being the underdog a little bit. “Through the districts, we were the one seed. Now, we can play a little bit looser. Most people probably think we’re going to lose, so it will be nice to be the underdog.”

#############

So... yeah, it should be a good game. I don't predict any sort of trash-talking or bad blood. Nah, none of that. (Thanks to Bucks County Courier Times' Kevin Cooney, for the Byrne quote.)

COUGARS LOOKING FORWARD TO SECOND SEASON

Yes, Springfield lost the District One Class AAA championship game Saturday. Yes, it was within reach. Yes, the Cougars have won only two district titles since 1945.

But, hey - why hang your head about a five-point loss to top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep? There's still the PIAA playoffs. It's new life for these Cougars.

"Maybe in a day or two, we can start talking about it and getting ready for it," said junior forward Adam Washington, who scored 15 points. "This was the game we wanted to win. We just didn't do it."

Junior guard Zack DeVito was so stung by the loss that, on two occasions in post-game interviews, he forgot the questions he was trying to answer.

"This one hurts because this was a goal of ours from the beginning of the season," said senior forward Wally Rutecki. "It didn't happen for us, but we can focus on states now."

Springfield (18-8) begins its PIAA journey Friday.

MARPLE NEWTOWN IS NOT SATISFIED JUST YET

Wednesday's win was big for Marple Newtown. How big? After taking down Harriton, 71-61, a throng of Marple fans - who wouldn't stop screaming throughout the game's duration - emptied the stands and occupied space on the floor.

But it's not over yet. The No. 8 Tigers (11-12) have a huge test looming Saturday in the quarterfinals of the District One Class AAA tournament, in top-seeded Holy Ghost Prep.

Here's what those around Marple's program had to say about their upcoming opponent:
Head coach Gerry Doemling: "They know what's coming up. We'll be ready. We know how good Holy Ghost is, but we also know that when we're playing our best, we can play with anyone. Other than St. Joe's Prep, we've been in every game this year.

Senior forward Ryan Hanley: "We've just got to keep playing hard. We have Holy Ghost next. People were predicted us to play for the championship. We knew we'd have to play them at some point. Might as well get it out of the way.

Senior guard Soutiri Sapnas (pictured): "They're the next team on the schedule. It's as simple as that."

Sapnas might have seemed like a man of few words, but that's only because he doesn't usually talk about upcoming opponents. He lets his play do the talking. And against Harriton, Sapnas dropped in 36. He'll need another game like that Saturday if the Tigers expect to beat the Firebirds.

PLAYOFF PREVIEW: THE BEST OF BUCKS COUNTY

OK, gang. You know enough about Delco's best basketball teams (assuming you like reading my game stories and features as much as I enjoy writing them). So here's a glimpse at the finest another section of District One has to offer.

Kevin Cooney, a veteran reporter at the Bucks County Courier Times, agreed to give me the low-down on the teams he covers regularly. Cooney and I go way back. (I first met the guy when I was a sports intern at the Courier Times in 2005, so I'm sure I'll talk Delco hoops with him at some point.)

But, anyway – here's what you need to know about Bucks County's best:

AAAA
Council Rock North
is the hottest team in Bucks, winning 14 of its last 15 after starting the year 2-3. “They've gotten on a nice roll,” Cooney said, “and the guy behind it is John Raymon,” a senior who gives the Indians a nice inside presence. The Suburban One League's National Conference leaders are tied with Neshaminy at 9-3, but have beaten them twice.

Neshaminy. Speaking of the Redskins, they can be dangerous in the Class AAAA bracket if sophomore Ryan Arcidiacono (pictured above) “can go on some sort of a run,” Cooney said, “because they're one-dimensional, around him.” Neshaminy's scoring leader doesn't have much around him and the Redskins – who lost to Plymouth Whitemarsh, Holy Ghost Prep, Council Rock North and Bensalem – lack a signature win. The 'Skins have beaten Lower Merion, however.

Bensalem entered week ninth in the Class AAAA power rankings but, like Neshaminy, the Owls (14-6) have lost twice to Council Rock North. They've also gotten blown out at Neshaminy. The Owls are hot, having won eight in a row – thanks to senior guard Nick Christian (the leading scorer who's headed Army) and junior center Ivan Flores.

Pennsbury is the odd-team out in Bucks. They've had a lot of up seasons in recent history, but this one is down for the Falcons. Senior point guard Jesse Krasna (pictured), a varsity contributor since his freshman year, and forward Dante Devine are the engines Pennsbury needs to fire up to make a run in districts.

AAA
Holy Ghost Prep
“should win the tournament,” according to Cooney. The main thing for the Firebirds is balance. Nate Lorence and Duffy Barrett give HGP good size inside, but Mike Byrne and Tyler Juchno can beat teams outside. Cooney pointed out that, against BAL opponent Christopher Dock, Ghost had 10 players scorer and six finished with between 5 and 12 points. “Their balance is what sets them apart, but they're also very defense oriented,” Cooney said.
