Letter of the Week
Oxford's Steve Vogel writes in to complain about violence schools. Kids arrested and/or suspending for bringing steak knives, drawing pictures of guns, a preacher's wife who kills him and is out of jail in less than six months, border guards who are arrested and convicted of shooting a drug dealer and sentenced to 12 years.
And who's fault is this? You got it, George W. Bush's.
At least, he notes, Michael Vick, is in jail.
Vogel notes: "God and religion are mentioned less and less and it quite evident," though I'm not sure WHAT is quite evident.
He closes by asking "What have we become?"
Beats me. But no doubt, once we elect a Democrat or Mike Huckabee is elected president all be right again with America.

We have become exactly what people like Steve Vogel have shaped us into. For every Steve Vogel questioning why a kid with a steak knife was arrested, there is another person who would write an editorial about what a terrible job the school district has done for not catching the girl before she got inside with the knife. They would have statistics of how many people were killed with steak knives, in school, by fifth grade girls, eating steak.
Yet Steve Vogel doesn't even realize that he is part of the problem. We are a society that is governed by feelings instead of common sense. Steve Vogel felt compelled to sit down and pen an editorial because he read some things and (with the exception of "what happened to Micheal Vick") he didn't like the way it made him feel inside. So he's calling for the whole country to change to conform to Steve Vogel's way of thinking, in an editorial to the Daily Times.
Laws are made and enforced based on feelings. Justice is not blind. If it makes people feel good, it doesn't matter one bit if it will solve a problem or actually work.
Unfortunately Steve, that's reality and complaining about reality in an editorial is an exercise in futility.
Hey, let's not knock editorializing. It pays the bills for some of us.

This is what we get when we permit childish, touchy-feely Liberalism to make policy.
I see something else in Steve’s letter too. I think he’s confused. Or, more precisely, people like him have been confused by others, intentionally so. See, most of what he finds wrong with our society/country has been brought by the Left –the purging of God from our society in particular, this, unquestionably the Left’s doing- and yet he concludes that the problem starts at the White House, presumably with the current administration. People have been programmed to blame Bush for everything that is wrong with our country, even when the wrongs are clearly not of Bush’s or the Right’s doing. This is the result of the ongoing, calculated and underhanded effort by the LibDems to capitalize on Bush unpopularity by casting him as a villian so they can seize power and once again spread their Liberalism, inflicting it on the resistant masses. If they can make Bush –and by extension all Repubs- look bad then the country is much more likely to accept the Lib crap they foist.
I don't knock editorials in general. If you are dishing out reality you can bring up points that society needs to hear. Scott Shields and a guy named Ken Crane, for example, have written some pretty good editorials to the Daily Times, that are fact based and reality based, about gun rights. I don't even mind reading editorials when my opinion differs from the author's opinion. To complain about reality in an editorial is like complaining that the sun is too bright. We know buddy, it's a cruel world AND life isn't fair...
Thank you "E":
You have demonstrated that you get it. The Steve Vogels of the world will continue to try to jam the square peg into the round hole, and when it doesn't work, people loke him will blame President Bush. I just wonder if Mr. Vogel believes that when Clinton was President, did all things good come from the White House such as lying and adultery? In fact, it was the last Clinton White House that violated every one of the Ten Commandments, but don't say that to a liberal, they will call you a hater, a bigot, intolerant, etc...
No problem Scott. I call em like I see em. You and I may not agree on everything, but from what I can tell from your posts, you are a reasonable guy.
