Bush Like Lincoln? We'll See

Letter of the Week (so far) goes to Charles Ednie of Brookhaven who compares George Bush to Abraham Lincoln.

Though it is hard to imagine, Bush speaking as eloquently as the Great Emancipator, Ednie makes some nice points about the Civil War and how Lincoln was hated, laughed at and ridiculed during those trying times.

He doesn't mention that Lincoln's war was a war of "choice," but it was. He could have let the South peacefully secede but he didn't. This is why the "war between the states" is still referred to by southerners as "the war of northern aggression."

As I have said, Ednie says only time will tell whether deposing Saddam and nation building in Iraq was a wise thing to do. Those who claim to know already, one way or the other, by definition don't know what they are talking about, any more than John Wilkes Booth knew what he was talking about when he declared Lincoln a "tyrant" after shooting him in the back of the head.

Quotes from Abraham Lincoln:

“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”

Great quotes. This shows just how far the Modern LibDems have strayed. Now they're full-blown Socialist and they regularly fan class divisions.

Bush like Lincoln??

You guys are truly out of your minds. Everything he's touched has turned to utter CRAP.

Spencer shows his true journalistic flair by taking a letter written by some obscure reader of his rag and trying to display it as popular opinion.

FACT - BUSH II is the worst thing to happen to the U.S.

And Randal, you are a piece of work. Taking quotes made by ultra conservative William Boetcker and passing them off as Lincoln's. An amazing display of hackery on your part. Smart people (even marginally smart ones like yourself) can use Google.

Ok. I'll revise my post and it remains just as true:

TG,

Popular opinion is popular opinion. According to the Pew research group, 53 percent of the American people now believe the U.S. effort in Iraq will succeed. Check it, Google girl.

As for obscure readers, no reader is more obscure than one who refuses to identify himself.

At least, Mr. Ednie has the guts to put his name to his opinions and the sense not to claim his opinions are "facts."

i will say that bush didn't walk into a nice wave like clinton did with the tech boom of the 90s. Only time will tell what happens with what he has done in Iraq and Afghanistan.
