The Diane Metzger Show

The WE (Women's Entertainment) Channel featured Diane Metzger in its "Women Behind Bars series" tonight.

Our Barb Ormsby, who covered her trial was prominently featured. (I was interviewed for the show too but ended up on the cutting room floor, where I belonged.)

Barb did any excellent job dispassionately describing some of the testimony at the trial.

Prosecutor Ed Weiss spoke convincingly of his belief that Diane not only was involved in the actual murder of Marti Metzger, but planned it as well. Frank Metzger, was not interviewed but in photos he looked like the low-life creep that he is in real life.

Diane came across rather poorly. I thought. Especially when she described how her infant son was cruelly ripped from her arms upon her capture. Did she expect them to let her take him to jail with her?

Marti's neighbor Colleen Carroll (I forget her married name) gave a damning interview, making Diane's story seem less and less credible.

My friend Art Donato, Diane's defense attorney, made it on to the show as did former Pennsylvania AG Ernie Preate, as Diane supporters. No mention was made of Preate's 1993 conviction for mail fraud or the 14 months he spent behind bars. (Since then he's been a lot more sympathetic to criminal types. Nothing wrong with that.)

Preate says Diane should be released from prison because she's been a model prisoner for the 30-plus years she's been inside.

As I said before I wouldn't squawk if she were let out but I don't believe she's ever been honest or come clean about her part in the crime. She's still the self-pitying dissembler, she's always been.

In all, I thought WE did a pretty good job with the show. It's a pretty entertaining series, even if it tends to be a bit overly sympathetic to the murderesses it features. But then that was to be expected.

I went to college with one of Martha Metzger's sons and Diane Metzger should die in prison for what she did. I used to read you when I lived in Delco. I'm glad you seem to have come around w/r/t her dishonesty.

Two things the show left out: (1) She was moved to Delaware to be closer to her son by Frank Metzger; and (2) She and Frank left four other holes near the one they buried Martha in. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what they were thinking. For some reason this never gets mentioned, nor that they left the boys in a motel in Buffalo, N.Y., after driving the boys 500 miles with their mother's dead body in the trunk.

But I digress. Kudos.

No matter how many more years Diana stays in prison it will never bring back Martha. She has spent enough years there and has been a model prisoner. I do feel sorry for the children who are left without a mother. I am not saying it was ok what happened.

I saw the story about her on TV. Even when the parole board gave her clearance for parole the governor said no. I don't understand states that allow the governor to decide like PA and CA.

We are a country that locks up most of our citizens which costs the tax payers a lot of money.

People are given life sentences and other are put on death row. In Germany the sentences are 25 years. This person has done more time than that but in the USA that is normal.

What was done was not right but neither is having her die in there either. I would not want to be the person who holds the hate inside for Diana. It only hurts that person and not the one it is meant for.

Diane Metzger met her husband Frank when she was 21 years old. He was estranged from his wife, Marti, and their three sons. A year later Diane and Frank moved in together, but Frank missed his other sons, and wanted to regain custody. On August 28th, 1974, Frank entered Marti’s home while Diane waited in the car. A struggle ensued and Frank beat Marti with a flashlight and suffocated her.

Frank and Diane fled the scene along with the boys. Six weeks later, when the couple got wind that the authorities were looking for them, they drove the boys to a hotel, abandoned them there, and fled to Idaho where they were ultimately arrested.

In 1976 Frank and Diane were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole. At Diane’s trial, Frank Metzger took total responsibility for the killing, and continues to do so to this day.

Diane maintains she did not know Frank was going to kill Marti that night, and hopes to be given clemency.

How does anyone get the fact that she committed a murder? If this is true she sit in the car and he murdered his ex to get the children. She was not even in the house at the time!!!

You people need to rent a clue.

First of all, the two older boys have consistently testified that she was in the house. That's their word against their murderer father's word.

Second, there were four sons, not three. So get your facts straight.

Third, the fight was over child support and NOT custody.

Finally, I don't care what a model citizen Diane Metzger is. She should die in jail.

I just watched the Diane Metzger episode on Women Behind Bars. I was feeling sorry for her and hoping she would get clemency until I read your post. You are correct - there is no mention of Diane and her husband leaving Marti's four children behind in a motel. You mention Diane and Frank digging four holes. What is that about? Where can I read the real story?

I am a Criminal Justice Major and I am reviewing her applicaton for clemency. I want to inform you that she was moved to be close to er elderly parents and her son. She has voiced concern for they're health. The Corrections system does not move a prisoner without just cause and a thourough investigation.
In fact I have her clemency application right here with me. Unless you kow about the Department of Correctons and state laws you cannot grasp what it is like to be an inmate behind bars. It is worse than living in a brothel house or a crack house. These inmates suffer unbelievable cruelties. Diane has rehabilitated herself and has been a model prisoner. It was never proven that she took part in the murder and unless you were there you cannot judge or call her a liar. She went into the hous to get the kids after her husband came out in a panic saying he had killed Martha.
I am certain she did what she thought was right and went to get the kids before they had to witness the crime. What would you do in her situation? Leave the kids in the house? Run and report it so thy could be wards of the state, even a worse curse than leaving them in a hotel room safely, so they would be discovered safey? What would any of us do? Unless we are put in this kind of situation you can never answer. I believe Diane should be released as she is asking for life on Parole not to be pardoned. There is major difference. Have you not protected anone you loved? Lied for them and stuck up for them? You want to believe thy are not anything but what you put them in your mind to be. I cannot stand societies opinions when they are stated out of complete ignorance. She is not a monster and may she be forgiven for trusting and loving murderous man. There is no truths to any graves made/ holes. Also you can implicate what you thought they were gonna do but your incorrect in doing so. Let sleeping dogs lay and I have faith in the system that she will be released soon. God said forgive and you shall be forgiven, stop the hate!!!!!!!!

Might I mention that spreading these morbid rumors about Diane is how you start untruths getting mixed up with reality. Look up her clemency application and look up your facts.
Society has me sickened with GOSSIP.
Diane never asked anyone to "feel" sorry for her. She isn't asking for a Pardon or to have her sentenced wiped clean, she simply is asking for life on parole. If she were to be asking for a pardon than I can see some problems arrising. Being unbiased and non judgemental is what will get you ahead in life. Diane never as nor will be a danger to herself or to society. She was simply in te wrong place at the wrong time with a murderer who was caugh and will never get out. Please get your facts straight before flapping your yappers about people you know nothing about.
