There Will Be Whining

Robert Samuelson says "Start Drilling" and he's not talking about teeth. Those chompers of environmentalists will be set on edge by such a common sense suggestion.

Money Q:

Members of Congress complain loudly about high oil profits ($40.6 billion for ExxonMobil last year) but frustrate those companies from using those profits to explore and produce in the United States.

It still amazes me how we tie our own hands on this matter. We're at the mercy of OPEC and increased international demand yet we can't stop and take care of ourselves. Technology isn't there yet and gas is ready to hit $4.00 a gallon. Don't give me any more B.S. about the weak dollar, give me Fuel Independence!!!

It is time to tell the moose-huggers to STFU and just start drilling. So what if they get their fragile Lib feelings hurt? So what? Why does such a small band of eviro kooks get to hold our nation hostage?

Steve-
The weak dollar is a factor. Any new drilling will take years before we see the first drop, and that still won't solve the problem.
I made some modest changes to my driving habits and went from 23 mpg to over 30. Biggest change you can make if you do a lot of highway driving: cruise control at the speed limit.

We are supposedly in a war for our very survival, but look back at WWII and the paper drives, rubber drives and gas rationing. Has Bush even once asked the American people to cut back on their energy use?
Back in May 2001, Cheney ignored calls for energy conservation:

Vice-president Dick Cheney dismissed on Monday night the idea of "conserving or rationing" as 1970s-era solutions to the US's energy shortages.

In a speech in Toronto, Mr Cheney said that "conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound, comprehensive energy policy.

He rejected energy conservation and renewable energy sources as major alternatives, promoting nuclear power as good for the environment since it emitted few greenhouse gases, ignoring the problems of nuclear waste disposal.

The Bush Administration, the GOP and a few Dems beholden to the automakers fought raising CAFE mpg levels for years. They argued that corrected for inflation that gas prices have never been lower. Well, NOW, even corrected for inflation, gas prices have never been higher.

Even if we drill domestically, we don't have enough. We need renewable sources and an investment/commitment like the space program of the 1960's.

That’s no reason not to drill and we need to start sometime.

And stop trying to blame Bush and Cheney for everything under the sun, DD.

Dave, I didn't bother reading the weak dollar arguement, we've wasted our time before on it. How about being energy independent by utilizing OUR OWN oil?

WE HAVE PLENTY. GO TO WIKIPEDIA FOR YOUR BACKUP, I'll SAY THE SAME THING

Steve-
Drilling is a short term solution. Oil is not renewable resource, the oil companies have a bad environmental track record, any new drilling will produce any new oil for several years.

You should read the argument about the dollar again, especially if you expect me to read the weak argument about drilling.

Great, short term, exactly what we need!

I'm mentioned this before - 10 -year window for domestic drilling. Allows us to end foreign dependancy and develop/ implement the next wave of technologies. Why does this seem too easy to me?

Easy, because you are not thinking it through. If they start drilling, they will just use that as an excuse to slow down progress on alternate energy. Low (adjusted for inflation) gas prices slowed down the push for higher CAFE standards.

Christ...

10-year period, implement REAL tax breaks on alternative technologies, scaling up towards the end. This is plenty of time to transition into new technologies while reducing dependence on foreign oil.

Uber-liberals just can't come up with plans, all they do is bitch, as we're seeing here with Dave. You can't sit around depending on the technology to come about while being dependant on others allthewhile knowing you have your own stock being held up by Bureaucratic bull$&%#.

We're talking about oil, isn't jonas due to show up?

Watch this video about Bush's claims on oil debunked. The part about oil starts at 2 1/2 minutes into the 5 minute clip.
