A Volt in the Neck

GM's car of the future is a consumer and taxpayer nightmare. Holman on the hoax of the Chevy Volt.

Sounds like that article was written by someone in the gasoline industry.

"Even better would be to dump CAFE altogether. If Congress really thinks consumers must be encouraged to use less gas, replace it with an intellectually honest gas tax."

Such a tax would never pass (and the WSJ would be the first to complain about such a tax), so it's the same as having no fuel efficiency policy.

The VOLT is going to be version 1.0, just like the early computers were expensive, but an inevitable first step.

False argument alert!!
"We're talking about a headache of a car that will have to be recharged for six hours to give 40 miles of gasoline-free driving. What if you park on the street or in a public garage?"

Most drivers sleep at night and have a commute less than 40 miles per day. For families with two cars, and one used for picking up kids and groceries, 40 miles per day is plenty, especially for people that are retired.

There are so many millions of people with their own garage, that Volt will have more potential customers than production capability.

The WSJ needs to stop shilling for the oil companies.

We forget, did we get a government check for buying our first computer?

"The media have been terrible in explaining how the homegrown car companies landed in their present fix, when other U.S. manufacturers (Boeing, GE, Caterpillar) manage to survive and thrive in global competition."

Yeah, like Boeing didn't have Weldon steering business and taxpayer dollars to them when they failed to compete and cried for protectionism when they did get beat.

The computer industry and the Internet were heavily underwritten by the government. And some professions, like teachers, did get breaks on computers.

Who is going to overpay for an impractical car just so that GM can get through the "version 1.0" stage? Is Joe Biden going to tell us that buying cars that are bad for our budgets or simply impractical is patriotic?
