Obama's Speech to the Kids

Ann Althouse notices Obama's speech to the kids is 10 times longer than Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

I read it and noticed that too. It is too long. But then, so are most politicians speeches these days.

As for those worried about the content, it's fine. It's pap, but it's fine.

Here's the text.Personally, I wouldn't want my own daughter dragged out of math class to hear it but that's just me.

WOW! Now you're quoting Ann Altouse. Um, does she mention that the Gettysburg address is a really really short speech? Come on Gil. Get real. I've just read the text of the speach. It was appropriate, acceptable, non confrontational, and inspirational.
Obama even threw a bone to old Spencerblog "Maybe you could be a good writer – maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper".

Let me mention the kind of example Obama teaches to our school children. As in Iran, the president says the answer to negotiating a peaceful solution is to first, confess all your wrong doings and mistakes to the bully and then kiss your adversaries rear end and then it is possible to sit down and negotiate a peaceful solution, to end the unfairnes that is going on. I explained this to my six year old that this is how you negotiate with an unfair person. Have I got it right?

Anon - Bit of a sretch there. But if you want to make that analogy, you might want to study the history of our involvment with Iran. Great Britain and the U.S. overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran in 1953 and installed the Shah. Who's the bully here? Explain to your six year old why its OK for the U.S. to go half way around the world to overthrow a government because oil corporations don't want to fairly distribute profits.

To be continued: my six year old came home today and stated that not only would the bully not negotiate but instead pushed him the ground and walked away laughing. My six year old and I am confused!

Anon - I agree. You are confused.

Anon-
The problem with your analogy is that the US has been the bully, and thus encouraged (by example and flouting of international laws) ankle-biters like Iran.
The proper course is for the US to renounce bullying, apologize for past acts, and work to engage with the mini-bullies to deter them.
If a nursery school kid tried to bully your 6-year old, what would you tell your kid? Beat up the 4 year old or talk nice and calm him down?

Even if by some strange twist the US matched your weakling 6-year old, the better course would be to negotiate and befriend other students (aka international diplomacy and allies) and stand united against the bully as a deterrent.

I agree with Bob, lets face it, the democrats have always been on the side of the kids. Do you remember under the Clinton administration "Midnight Basket Ball" this was to fight Juvenile delinquency. Of course one wonders, why it wasn't called "Midnight Stick Ball" for the poor white Juveniles. You know when you think about it, if the republicans had suggested this same program, they proably would have been labeled as Racial profilers, by the main stream media.

Let's face it. The Democrats have been on the side of the kids by getting the CHIP program passed to help kids.

Oh yeah, the Democrats are definitely on the side of the kids. Just look at all the taxes they get to pay on debt incurred by a Democrat Congress they never voted for.
Talk about taxation without representation. Looks like there will be tea parties for the foreseeable future.

Jake-
How about all the kids paying for the trillion-dollar plus Iraq war and the $2-trillion Bush tax cuts for the top 1%? And of course, the hundreds of billions in interest.

Fortunately, the kids have been saved from another Great Depression. They can look forward to a cleaner environment and green jobs when they grow up as Obama's programs take effect over the next few years. They have a President who values education and will inspire many students, particularly the underprivileged, to try harder.

Just as there is no scientific basis to global warming, there is no reason to believe this economic downturn was mitigated in either length or severity by the Democrats' obscene stimulus spending.
Our children will be paying all of their adult lives for the political gamesmanship of Obama and his "devout followers". Or as Bob calls them..."fools".

Jake - No scientific basis to global warming? If you say so. So tell me Jake, do you believe in the biblical version of creation, or do you believe in evolution?
