Road Watch -- Cyclists' Survey

Jan. 20, Road Watch…
(DVRPC In-Depth Study on Bicyclists)
New information about the habits, attitudes and desires of bicyclists in the Philadelphia region has been released in a new study by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
It is the most comprehensive look at bicycling ever done in the Delaware Valley and may be the largest of its kind ever conducted in the United States.
Entitled “Bicycling in the Delaware Valley in 2005,” it provides information about the behavior of adult bicyclists and the trips they make.
Data was collected about trip purpose, length/duration of trip, use of supplemental modes of transportation such as mass transit and motor vehicle, frequency of bike travel, crash experience, safety habits and more.
Key findings include:
BULLET Nearly two-thirds of daily bicycle trips are for utilitarian purposes, rather than for exercise or recreation.
BULLET About 60 percent of adult bicyclists were observed without a helmet.
BULLET One out of three bicyclists reported having been in a crash or fall in the preceding year and slightly more than one in six were involved in a crash involving a motor vehicle.
BULLET Bike lanes are favored by bicyclists over any other facility type; others include wide roadway shoulders and education of motorists on “sharing the road.”
The survey drew a sample of the region’s estimated 133,000 daily bicycle trips and 1 million adult bicyclists. Over 1,200 surveys were completed and 372 individual interviews were conducted.
The results of this survey, “a snapshot” of bicycling in the Delaware Valley, will help planners and policymakers better understand the underlying trends in bicycling and plan for future bicycling facilities.
The report can be viewed at www.dvrpc.org or call John Madera at (215) 238-2854.
As a former longtime cyclist and MS 150 Bike Tour participant, I can only say that only true cycling diehards can endure the kind of weather we’ve been having. The Pro Cycling Championship that winds around Manayunk and The Wall in June seems so far off right now.
MACDADE BRIDGE
If you don’t know by now – after stories in this paper already announcing the fact – the new $2.6 million MacDade Boulevard Bridge over Darby Creek near Springfield Road in Darby Borough is finally open after the road was closed a year.
Area business owners along that stretch of road between Springfield Road and Main Street especially would like to remind you as business had been down since the closure.
AMTRAK/SEPTA
Amtrak and railroad workers reached a tentative contract settlement Friday so six of SEPTA’s 13 Regional Rail lines will not have to shut down for a potential strike. SEPTA uses rails owned and powered by Amtrak.
The lines include the R1 Airport Line; the R2 Wilmington Newark line; the R5 Paoli Thorndale; the R6 Cynwyd line; the R7 Trenton line; and the R8 Chestnut Hill West line.
About 54,000 of SEPTA’s 121,000 daily rail commuters would have been affected if a strike had occurred at the end of the month.
I-95 – CHESTER
The left lane on I-95 North/South will be closed at the Routes 352/320 (Edgmont Avenue) Exit in Chester 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today (Tuesday) for concrete barrier repairs.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through this area as backups and delays will occur.
30TH STREET
Amtrak will restrict the eastbound I-76 ramp to 30th Street 9 p.m.-5 a.m. today through Thursday while crews make repairs to the adjacent parking garage structure, PennDOT said.
I-76/ROUTE 1
Lane closures will occur during off-peak hours next week on I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Route 1 (Roosevelt Extension) in Philadelphia for the installation of conduit for a $23 million project to install Intelligent Transportation System equipment on both highways, PennDOT said.
The project began Sunday and continues through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on I-76 East/West between Passyunk and University avenues, and on Route 1 North’s right lane, which will be closed between Wissahickon Avenue and Broad Street.
