The Daily Numbers -- Jan 2

The Daily Numbers: 3 hours, all the longer it took for Philadelphia to record its first homicide of 2008.

4 hours before midnight on New Year’s Eve when a Trainer resident was shot and killed in New Castle County, Del., in what is being described as a botched car theft.

46 people died in fires in Philadelphia in 2007. That’s down 10 percent from 2006.

50 people left homeless after fire roared through an apartment complex in Delran, N.J., overnight.

6 years in a row for Fralinger String Band to take top honors in the Mummers Parade.

1 man now dead as a result of a chase and shootout between a suspect and police in Montgomery County.

20 years in law enforcement now in the rear-view mirror for Montco D.A. Bruce Castor. He now becomes a county commissioner.

4 inches of snow that fell on western Pennsylvania on New Year’s Day. No, they have not yet made that area part of the “northern and western suburbs.”

100 stagehands at the Philadelphia Convention Center who could hit the bricks in a labor impasse.

1 minute into the new year when the first baby arrived, to a couple at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, N.J.

1 hour and 6 minutes for a newborn to show up in Delaware County, to Samah Mohamed at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

70, age of man attacked in a violent encounter at 69th Street Terminal in Upper Darby.

2 teams that played yesterday who could easily have found themselves playing for a national title. That would be USC and Georgia, both of whom won easily.

6 more days before we decide the collegiate football championship when Ohio State and LSU clash in the Sugar Bowl.

Call me a Phanatic: A look at the ups and downs of being a Philadelphia sports fan.
Anyone else think that game between the Sabres and Pens played outdoors in Buffalo amid swirling snow was pretty cool? Reminded me of playing pond hockey as a kid, without the 70,000 fans. Oh, I forgot, kids don’t play pond hockey anymore. They use their thumbs on Playstation instead. Sure is a lot warmer.

I Don’t Get It: Why do so many people insist on badmouthing the Mummers. Hey, at least it gives us a parade on Broad Street, something our sports teams don’t seem capable of doing.

*

Today’s Upper: If you don’t break into a strut when you hear those string bands then you’re not really into what the Philadelphia region is all about.

Quote Box: “We normally watch it on TV, but when the kids said they wanted to come down, I said we’ll come down this year.”

-- Melvin Mays of West Philadelphia, enjoying the Mummers Parade in Philly on New Year’s Day.
