True Brett: Phils feast on NL pitching

Nothing like a little good ol’ National League pitching to cure what ails the Phillies.

The struggling Phils rolled into Atlanta last night after basically getting their head handed to them over the past week and a half by the American League.

So of course the first order of business was to hand Brett Myers his head. Actually the team demoted him to their AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. To his credit, Myers accepted the move. He will be on the mound tonight in Allentown.

Back in Hot-Lanta, the Phillies celebrated their return to National League play by battering somebody named Charlie Morton who started for the Braves.

Shane Victorino led the charge with two hits and four RBIs as the Phils posted an 8-3 win. They also got a solid start from Kyle Kendrick, who clearly did not have great stuff but wriggled out of a number of jams. He’s now 8-3 on the year, albeit with a 4.58 ERA.

If the Phils could somehow merge Kendrick and Myers, maybe transplanting Brett’s arm on Kyle’s body, they’d have themselves a helluva pitcher.

The Phillies are clearly rolling the dice with the Myers move. They really no longer have a place for him in their bullpen. They are gambling that Myers can somehow correct his mechanics in AAA and become the vital No. 2 cog in their rotation this team desperately needs.

In the meantime, the team will announce today who will take Myers’ spot in the rotation. Bet on A.J. Happ, the lefty who has posted some decent numbers with the IronPigs. He’s 5-6 with a .354 ERA.

In the meantime, anytime their starter is not named Cole Hamels, the Phils will need to put up the kind of offensive numbers they posted last night to keep their lead in the NL East.
