72 degrees, our expected high today, but it will be marked by heavy downpours, thunder and lightning. A flood watch is in effect in the region.
2 brothers from Ridley Township who face charges connected to a heist at a local jewelry store.
25,000 dollars in scholarships for local parochial school students to continue their education at a Catholic high school.

2 people shot in North Philadelphia early this morning.

1985, still the one and only national champion for Villanova. The Wildcats were eliminated Saturday night by North Carolina.
30 wins and eight losses, the final mark for the Wildcats.
3 home runs surrendered by Brett Myers last night as the Phils dropped their opener to the Braves
2 hits, all the Phils could muster against Braves starter Derek Lowe.
56 wins vs. 69 losses for the Phils in their openers.
4 straight opening day losses for the Phillies.
29 point loss for the Sixers last night as they got blown out by the New Jersey Nets.
1 player in double figures for the Sixers. Lou Williams tallied 14 points.
1 more day the Phils and their fans have to wait to try to even their record. No game tonight.

Call me a Phanatic: A look at the ups and downs of being a Philadelphia sports fan. What, the Phillies maybe thought they were going to get a pass because they won the World Series? In this town? It took just 17 minutes for the boos to rain down on Brett Myers after he surrendered a third home run. A bit of an overreaction? Sure. A surprise? Hardly.
*
I Don’t Get It: It’s been a brutal week for gun crimes. Something has to be done. I don’t want to tread on anyone’s Second Amendment rights. But I think we have to do something to keep guns out of the hands of those intent on doing great harm with them.
*
Today’s Upper: Hey, look on the bright side, the Phils have another 161 games left on their schedule. Then again, Villanova has zero. Their season is over.
*
Quote Box: “I made three mistakes and they didn’t miss them.”
-- Phillies starter Brett Myers, on the three home run balls he served up against the Braves last night.

Phil-
Have you ever considered putting your "Daily Numbers" in numerical order? Either high-to-low or low-to-high.

Phil-
Have you been keeping an eye on Gil's blog lately?
For today, April 6th, he really went out of his way (with TWO long winded posts) to promote an anti-gay agenda.

1) He claimed that asking kids about whether it's okay to have a gay babysitter had no place in a health class.
This ignores the longstanding myth that being gay is a mental disorder (still on the books of the US military). So, a health class is a very appropriate venue to dispel such views.

2) Spencer is all too happy to post the anti-gay and ignorant rantings of Scott Shields (ESQ). Shields apparently believes that being gay is a learned behavior that can be "cured", particularly with prayer.

3) Gil equated the question of a gay babysitter to a babysitter with HIV. This juxtaposition furthers misconception held by many that all (or most) gay people have HIV. It also re-enforces the impression that being gay is like a disease you can catch by exposure.

4) Gil defends his position against Prop 8 with the following straw man argument:
"Moreover, they would have you think that if you don't support the rights of gays to be legally married to one another you are a bigot and a homophobe."
The problem is that the proper logic is: if you are a bigot and a homophobe, you're not going to support legalizing gay marriage.
I think this is a better explanation for Gil's views.

5) I think the pressure is getting to him. Gil's a pretty lazy blog poster. He usually grabs a snippet and links to some right-wing opinion piece, and tosses in a snarky comment of his own.
Gil has now gone 14 posted threads in a row without a comment (he set a record last month with over 20 in a row). This is a dramatic reversal from his heyday a few months ago when each posting would often get one or two dozen hits.
I've been needling him about it and how he is on track to break last months record. (He's 2/3 the way there, and it's only the first week of April.) He seems rather desperate to get some hits with these last two very long and appalling posts in an attempt to offend someone enough to post a comment.

I brought this to your attention before, but I've yet to see any real change or improvement in Gil's regressive behavior toward gays. I'm actually rather shocked that you and the Delco Times permit Gil to continue in such a prominent role with these discredited attitudes. The casual observer would tend to think that Gil was being paid to espouse a view that the Times felt needs more "ink", rather than less.

It might behoove you to issue some disclaimer that these views are Gil's alone and do not represent the Times' views.

This week, you got a letter to the editor from "BOB ANDERSON" complaining about dropping the stocks table.
I think it's long past time for the Delco Times to drop Gil Spencer and slash some of the red ink.
Seriously, how much do you pay this unprofessional guy to regurgitate right-wing talking points, promote bigotry and act as a mouthpiece for the Delco GOP?
How about his constant disparagement of Chester (with emphasis on the make up of it's citizens)?

Here's a "Daily Number" for your column: How many hours a week does Gil really take to do his job?
My guess is no more than 5.

Gil would probably be much happier over at The Bulletin where opinions like his pass for news.
