Rise and Shine --- Healing power of music

Good Morning and welcome to a brand-new day!

Ever notice no matter how bad the day is going, you hear a song (whether it be on the radio, iPod or getting gas at Wawa) that turns the mood.
Sure, there are a lot of depressing songs out there, but sometimes all you need is a good tune to turn things around.
It might be a song you previously didn't like or maybe didn't pay much attention when it was playing.
Then, boom, the song touches your soul.
Maybe we all need a good soundtrack for life.

Rise and Shine --- On the Radio

Good Morning and it appears about time we all went South!

I used to listen to the radio all the time. Now, not so much.
I might flip around while driving to hear a song I like. If there's nothing on the music side, I'll hit the AM button and catch some talk radio.
That usually means the radio is close to being turned off.
Aside from the racist hate radio that fills the airwaves (Rush, Hannity, et al), sportstalk radio is continually heading into the dark range.
Spend any time around people and you know they like to talk. Some like to throw things out there to get a reaction. Some believe they know everything about everthing and need to let you know it too.
Now that the Super Bowl is over, sportstalk radio is filled with callers and hosts who want changes made to the Eagles. They want the coach fired. They want a new quarterback. They want new ownership.
OK, the Eagles haven't won a Super Bowl, but what would you rather have, the doldrums of the 1980s and 1990s or a chance to win every year? Fire the coach and end up with a Rich Kotite clone (remember how bad that was?). Get rid of the most successful quarterback in franchise history and end up with, what, Bobby Hoying?
Then we can venture into the Phillies. All the team has done is make the last two World Series, winning the first.
Now, they go out and get the best pitcher in the game, but nobody is happy. I actually heard somebody say they would never attend a game again after the deal that brought in Roy Halladay and got rid of Cliff Lee.
It almost makes you pine for the blither blather of Rush and his hatred of everything.
Then again, maybe it's time to pull out the CDs.

Rise and Shine --- Stupid is as stupid does

Good Morning and welcome to Friday!

Can't top this amount of stupidity if you tried:

WASHINGTON - The White House is firing back at Rush Limbaugh after the conservative talk-radio host urged people not to donate to relief efforts in Haiti.
Spokesman Robert Gibbs says there are always people who say "really stupid things" during a crisis. He says it's sad that Limbaugh would use the power of his pulpit to convince people not to assist those in need.

Limbaugh said on his radio show yesterday that he wouldn't trust that money donated to Haiti through the White House Web site would actually go to the relief efforts. He said Americans don't need to contribute to earthquake relief because they already donate to Haiti through their income taxes.

And Limbaugh's the voice of the people

Rise and Shine --- Stop the hate

Good Morning and welcome to the middle of the week!

Well, yesterday was certainly a banner day for those who live their lives to hate (and make money doing it).
No matter what he may say to those who hang on every word, Rush Limbaugh is only in it for the money. If he can make that money on the back of hate, than so be it. If he can make that money by inciting riots, then so be it. If he can make that money by twisting logic, then so be it.
By the way, doesn't he sound a lot like THIS GUY.
You know, sometimes when I turn on the radio it's still tuned to his station (thanks to listening to the Phillies game the night before). Yesterday, before I could get my hand to button to turn it off, I had to hear Limbaugh's latest rant of racist hate.
As many know by now, he called President Barack Obama and the woman he nominated for a Supreme Court post, Sonia Sotomayor, 'reverse racists.' I could picture the foam coming out of his mouth as he ranted on and on about their 'racist policies' and 'racist decisions.'
Why was he so angry? Well, Obama had the nerve to nomination not only a woman by an Hispanic woman at that.
The truth be told, though, it's Rush Limbaugh who is the racist (or at least he's using that common denominator to get ratings which means more money in his pocket). Like we needed more evidence after the whole Donovan McNabb fiasco on national TV a few years ago.
He's a blanket racist and would only be happy if white men ran the world. Just like those who put confederate flags on their pick up trucks, they try to couch it with fake excuses, but it only smells like one thing.
Remember, hate only gets you so far.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning and welcome to another Wednesday!

Phillies Hall-of-Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt once said in Philadelphia you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day.
Schmidt, until he was at the tail end of his career, was no friend of the media. Much like other superstars, he hid after games, rarely talking.
Schmidt wouldn't be able to leave his house if he played today. The proliferation of sports talk radio has taken the fun out of the games. You can just watch the game and enjoy it for what it is, a break from normalcy. The next day, though, don't turn on the radio unless you want to hear about how bad it really was. Had it on in the car for about five minutes Tuesday and actually heard one of the hosts say the Phillies should cut or trade Ryan Howard in the offseason because he's no longer helping the team.
As someone says, 'Genius.'
Speaking of genius, how about the government giving $85 billion to AIG so the insurance company can stay afloat.
While we on the ground struggle with food prices, heating prices and the general overpricing of everything, these big companies are getting bailed out.
How about if I petition the government for money so I can remain solvent?
By the way, AIG's CFO Steven J. Bensinger took home a salary of $2.1 million last year. Meanwhile, former CEO Martin J. Sullivan got a $4.7 million severance package when he was forced out last year. Current CEO Robert Willumstad, who is rumored to be on his way out after the buyout, got an annual salary of $1 million, but took home a reported $21 million in bonuses and stock options once worth $36 million.
They need saving? How about this, instead of bailing out these companies make the greedy execs reinvest their money until the company becomes solvent. That's the way it works in the real world.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, CBS3 pulled the plug on Larry Mendte yesterday. The Delco-born television news reader is out of a job for the moment, probably heading down to the coffee shop in Chestnut Hill to drown his sorrows.
Or something like that. Unlike others who have been fired over the last few months, Mendte won't have much trouble finding a new job.
Still, he will have a lot of time on his hands for the short term. To that end, how about this. Here's an offer for Mendte to bring is, well, unique brand of humor to the rest of the world. How about a video blog, Larry. Send along some clips and we'll check them out here at Rise and Shine and post them. You never know, it might just work.

Speaking of those speaking, does Don Imus really not get it or is he just trying to drum up some ratings buzz.
During a show Monday morning, he made what many consider another racist comment.
You be the judge, here's what was said:
During an on-air conversation about the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"
Told by sports announcer Warner Wolf that Jones, who used to be nicknamed Pacman, is "African-American," Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know."

Of course, Imus, who is never at a lack for words, said he was misunderstood. He was trying to say Jones was being picked on because he was black.
I think Don Imus is too old and stupid to be on the air. These kinds of radio shows, be it Imus, Rush, or whoever do nothing but spread hate. Whatever happened to just playing music on the radio.
