Review: Aliens Vs. Predator 2: Requiem
Now I know the title had the promise of reviewing the movie Aliens Vs. Predator 2: Electric Boogaloo…, I mean Requiem, but follow me on this because I going somewhere with it.
Growing up really sucks; things are so much more exciting and impressive when you are a child. No where is this better illustrated for my generation than when we go back and watch old TV shows from our childhood, such as “Perfect Strangers.” When I was 7-years-old, one of my favorite shows was ABC’s “Perfect Strangers” (part of the TGIF Friday night line up) and I must have been a stupid child because when I go back and watch episodes of this classic I am left with a feeling that I’ve just done about six Drain-o shooters.
This was the same feeling I had when I walked out of the theater for the first Aliens vs. Predator movie, shaken and angry. They took a movie that I wanted to see since I was 10-years-old and made the most “unwatchable” 90 minutes ever committed to celluloid.
One good thing I can say about AVP 2 (man, hate when acronyms are used for movie titles) is, it’s better then the first one, which is like being the best looking member of Nickelback.
Basically the movie is lackluster. It started out strong with a great scene of a little kid and a face hugger. After that, the movie goes downhill pretty quick. When I go to a movie of this nature, I expect at least two scenes that “blow me away”, with intensity, and this movie never accomplished that.
I appreciate what the filmmakers were trying to do in this one by focusing on the stories and experiences of the humans caught in the crossfire, which is what they did in the first movie. The problem is the interesting parts of the movies are the Aliens and the Predators and so I went through both movies wishing there were more scenes with these creatures.
I’m sure that most people will feel I am being too critical of the flick, but especially after the first movie, I had high expectations to make up for lost ground. I guess the only thing I can do is hope and wait for Freddy vs. Jason 2.
Rating: Wait and download it *
