Cop addicts

Hi, Ed, I’m calling about the Trenton cop arrested for selling dope. Yes, Trenton police have been cutting corners for the last several years. Before this kid we had a new officer who is on methadone because he’s a heroin addict, but he’s related to two sergeants who are well connected with the higher-ups. Just say, we don’t welcome these guys and we don’t want these guys in our police force, but they are being slipped in because of who they know.

Sooner or later addiction is going to touch the lives of the Police, just like it touches all our lives, and they'll maybe be able to one day see that the problem of addiction is not a moral issue or a crime issue but a medical and social issue that needs to be legalized and treated instead of this insane war on drugs that is nothing more than a war on the citizens of this country. Recent studies show that blacks and lower class people are arrested first, yet addiction knows no such class boundries, often it's a matter of who can pay for justice and who can't. We need to stop filling our prisons with non violent drug offenders and it's attitudes like this that only help perpetuate the myths and stigma for a problem that has touched everyone from Politicians to movie stars, from Doctors to musicians - eventually we will all be touched by this disease and one day when we realize (again) the prohibition doesn't work, never has and never will, maybe one day we can do something about the problem other than "judge" the addict. There's no reason why that "addicted" (or dependent rather) cop can't be as good if not better than anyone else on that force. I just hope he or she has some compassion on non violent drug offenders.
