Not Teaching

Ed, I am so sick of these substitute teachers who come into our building with nothing but a paperbook in their hands. They do nothing all day but sit around and read. I worked with one today who was so pathetic she would not take attendance. She had a student take the attendance. Enough is enough. Get rid of these rooms of substitute teachers.
No Substitute
What do you propose? Leave the kids to their own devices?—Ed. Note

I was a substitute teacher for 2 years, and if fringe benefits were offered to the subs maybe they would come in with more than a paperbook. They are in reality babysitters to kids, who have no respect for the sub. Even if you try to reason with them the sub wastes his or her time. Not all students, but the ones who think they are cool and want to impress their friends by being a doufus. Some teachers and I won't say which school system don't even give them the time of day. I was in two township school systems and the school with just one high school was more receptive than a school system who uses subfinder and sticks you in one of three high schools. There was one school in that township which was alright, the other you got lost finding floor to floor in time to find your class and third where you could smell the booze on the students breath and if some idiot tells me that I have issues with that well I was a student too and we didn't carry knives, drink booze at 8 in the morning and kids whose pants were at their knees. Before you act like super teacher put yourself in the shoes of the sub. They do it to see if they fit in if they decide to go to graduate school for a teaching certification and make it their profession, and some who aren't used to students who need a truant officer need a boost to their confidence from the considerate teachers who were in their shoes when they were young. When you can't find a job because the economy isn't answering the call, the role of substitute teaching and listening to 11 at night for that call or waking up at 5 till 8 in the morning is a necessity. Happy now.
