Charismatic Con Man

I’m still dizzy from Obama’s spin in Philadelphia . Here’s a guy who was the first to jump up on his soap-box and insist that Imus be fired for his one-off remarks about a basketball team, yet rationalized to a kool-aid drinking public why his pastor of many years wasn’t a bad guy, just misunderstood. Thanks to YouTube, videos of "Reverend Wright" preaching God Damn America have now been seen by scores of millions. There's no way to take it back, no way to ignore it, no way to excuse it.

Ophra Winfrey was a member of the same church in the 1990's and bailed a short period after hearing some of the pastor's remarks. What would be Martin Luther King's reaction be to a Jeremiah Wright “God Damn America" sermon? If Hillary’s pastor was a Klansman, yet she only repudiated his remarks after coming under campaign pressure, would we believe her?

Hate is Hate – Spin is Spin – If racist hate baiting is sugar coated with eloquent speeches, this is not the CHANGE that America needs or deserves.

I would first like to thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I am a 35yr old Black man that lives in the city of Trenton and I am married with 4 children. Your newspaper has been a part of my life ever since I was able to read. My mother even had a subscription for me when I served in the United States Marine Corps. Needless to say, I have grown up on your newspaper.

I was extremely disappointed this morning when I picked up the paper and the headline was not about the most socially viable event that has happened to this entire country in decades – Senator Barack Obama winning the Democratic Party’s nomination for the Presidency of The United States of America. Now, I can’t take anything away from the kids of Allentown H.S. that were on the front page and what that game meant to them. However, there is not a more poignant topic than this nation having elected its first Black Presidential nominee. Not only was this story not on the front page, it was on the 4th page. In your opinion, Barack Obama winning the nomination wasn’t worth a quarter of Tony Mack losing his bid for election as a county Freeholder, as evidenced by the size of the individual articles.

I would venture to say that there is a large percentage of your readership that would take offense to, what appears to be a tremendous slight to the Black community. There was not a single piece of commentary in the few sentences that were written about this most historic occasion. There are but a few facts, figures and quotes that comprise this excuse for coverage of this momentous event. On page 2, there is half a page of commentary about one of your columnists “getting lathered up” about what he thinks is a waste of time and natural resources by getting a receipt from a postal clerk. This warrants more attention than the 1st ever Black Presidential nominee? Am I missing something?

After it was official that Sen. Obama would win the nomination, I called my grandmother, who is approaching 80yrs old, to see how she felt about what had just happened. This is a lady who became an adult and was denied the right to vote at all, let alone have a say in who is going to be the leader of this nation. My grandmother has had 2 pictures hanging on her walls since before I was born. These pictures are of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These men represented the change to her and my parents’ generation that many millions of people believe Barack Obama is trying to bring forth. She was beside herself with elation about what she’d just witnessed.

There have been many negative opinions, sir, about your newspaper. Not until today did I buy into it. Whether intended or not, your blatant disregard to give this event any attention will be viewed by many people, especially Black people, to be racist in nature.

Again, sir, I thank you for your time and I would hope that in the future you would give more serious consideration to what your readership deems to be worthy of a cover story.
