While the long lines of injustice, poverty, crime, unemployment, school board games and drugs drag on, seems all a city council member can become outraged about is saggy pants. Trenton has been bombarded with subject matter from fascinating to down right dangerous, yet, Councilwoman Annette Lartigue chooses to spend her time drafting a law to outlaw saggy pants. I'm sure she's spent hours pouring over this issue. She will probably plan the proper approach to get this law put in place as quickly as she can. Her sole purpose being the public will be spared the embarrassment of non-compliant individuals that only think of their own interests and wants. I'm sure the Councilwoman will do all she can to put this issue in its proper perspective and place. Now the real story. Councilwoman Lartigue attended a tenant meeting in 2004 at the Lutheran Towers Senior Citizens High Rise on West State Street. The purpose of the meeting was to answer questions regarding senior concerns about the condition of their building. The complaints ranged from, unclean dark hallways, leaking pipes, raw sewage leaks, unsafe elevators, rodents, faulty wiring, inappropriate security, theft,in addition to trying to obtain additional supervision of tenants who had mental or physical disabilities. After listening and seeing the frustration on the faces of people who have lived in this city most of their lives, she suggested several solutions. Councilwoman Lartigue, informed the seniors that if they "wanted" better security they would have to pay for police to stay in the building. Also, "remember, you get what you pay for". In addition, she informed the tenants, that issues such as elevator safety was the responsibility of the building superintendent, even after being informed that their complaints had fallen on deaf ears. Yet, Councilwoman Lartigue ended the meeting,in fifteen minutes by informing the seniors that "if they didn't like the living situation at Lutheran Towers they could just move out". She left no call back numbers, spoke of no real resolutions,or directed anyone to seek other city agencies available to them. She simply walked out. Senior citizens, do not have the income or resources to relocate at any given time. The purpose of the meeting was to try and elicit help from the person they voted for, their district representative. No such luck. The councilwoman simply treated the seniors with indifference. At that time, their votes weren't being solicited, the campaign was over. Although, I appreciate the councilwoman's fierce resolve regarding the astronomical problem of saggy pants, seems to me that any and all concerns that she could put time into should be given to the seniors FIRST.
