playoff bound

Well, I guess I shouldn't be too unhappy about the Phillies' 3-4 start after the first week. Afterall, the Fightn's are usually at 1-6 or 2-5 by this point. The Phillies never seem to get off to a cold start. Maybe it's because of the cold weather. But that's not much of an excuse since the other teams are playing in the same weather. What's depressing is that the Phillies are 1-3 in games that Myers and Hammels are pitching. They're going to have to do much better when they are pitching if they want a shot at beating the improved Braves and improved Mets this season. They can't expect the Mets to disintigrate as they did last year.

The good news is that the Flyers have made the playoffs. Not only that, but they got the sixth seed which means they get to play the Washington Capitals. The Capitals are certainly not a bad team, but they are certainly the weakest of the eight teams. They got as many points as they did by feasting on the amazingly weak division they play in. If the Flyers played teams like Florida, Tampa Bay and Atlanta eight times each this year, they would be the number one seed in the playoffs. I say forget the divisions. If you're going to have a playoff system that pits the top team in the Eastern Conference against the eighth team, and so on, then just have two conferences and no divisions. That way teams like the Capitals would not get the home team advantage in the first round. They don't even deserve to be in the playoffs, let alone get a home team advantage in the first round. Each team in the conference should play the other teams in the conference an equal amout of games. That would make things a lot fairer.
Wasn't Friday night a great night for Philadelphia sports fans. The Flyers and the Sixers both clinched a playoff spot at the same time (just minutes apart). Then just to top things off, the Phillies beat the Reds in the first game of their four-game series. Although I didn't see much of that game since my cable company (Service Electric) kept taking the CN8 feet off the air throughout much of the game. We don't get CN8, unless a Phillies, Flyers or Sixers game is on the channel. The feed was gone at 10:30 p.m. Unfortunately, the game was delayed 90 minutes by rain and it didn't start until close to 9:30. Don't you just hate when that happens.
