Animal control issues revisited

The city has been without an animal control officer since July 2007.

The problem?
Residents don't know what to do when they encounter a stray or loose animal because the city had not arranged for a comparable service.

Council President Ed Simpson said council is considering its options such as bringing back the position on a part-time basis or contracting services with an agency such as the Chester County SPCA.

*It would cost the city $14,680 to contract animal control services with the SPCA.
*The former full-time animal control officer was paid about $32,000 a year.

Hopefully council will find a solution soon.

Here is an idea. Eliminate the Public Relations position and you can pay for both the contract and the F/T officer.

I 3rd that vote, get rid of the public relations position. At this time we surely don't need her.

We live in Millview and there are many stray cats walking around trying to get into the garages. We know the people here own them but don't take care of them. What happens to homeowners that do not take care of their cats????
Too many rules here but not the correct ones, no wonder people act and do what they do here in C-Ville, it is a disgrace to say we live here.

Let's bring our concerns to the new conucil at the next meeting. They will probably be more responsive than the block of four.

Snow removal is a major concern as well as the rehire of the animal control officer.

Are animals in this city required to be registered? Are dogs allowed to roam without a leash? It happens everyday and before someone is seriously harmed something needs to be done.

I don't need a press release on the matter either, so I agree also on the PR gal.

It a case of "Do the bright thing here..." Strays, no matter how docile can "pack up" and become surprisingly dangerous.

Too, I'd suspect that the strays running loose haven't been properly vaccinated and are potential vectors for rabies.

Dump the pr position and contract with the CCSPCA.

To anonymous who said bring back the CCSPCA, you need to look into what your money would pay for. The CCSPCA handles complaints, however they do not patrol and provide education to the residents, or tray cats, or come out after 8:00pm, maybe not come out at all - even when cruelty is involved. So the City can pay for nothing, or have a full time animal control to handle the issues, and that position could pay for it's self if done right.

the elimination of the PR person is not going to be able to cover all the positions posted -snow removal, parking issues, fix pools, open up the rec center and parking enforcement. The PR person is doing awonderful job. Why is it that everyone time they need something done. it is the PR person that is geeting the blunt of the comments. people make it look like her salary is going to fix the city. What has she done to you, for people to come on here and make these comments

Here's a snow thought- Coatesville is a non-profit status city. Why not get all those private plow peole out, give them a reciept to take off their taxes, and have THEM do the plowing.
No money involved. No jobs lost.

We need an animal control officer. Even if it is part time. Perhaps Kristin can split her hours with the lady? No one loses their job, and everyone benefits!

Why not just apply for FEMA funding for the street crisis, as other areas have done, and cancel the donations we currently give the SPCA and allow that amount to go towards hiring an animal control officer, at least part time?

Not only should they cut the pr person how 'bout getting rid of the assistant city manager,2 useless positions that could put money back into the budget.
