Rise and Shine --- Entering the Princess world

Good Morning and welcome to a brand-new week!

Having a 5-year old daughter means anytime anything happens with a Disney princess, you have to get on board.
With the new movie 'The Princess and the Frog' coming out, the princess world was amped up.
Everything was Princess Tiana, Princess Tiana, Princess Tiana. The girls in school talked about it all day. There were trips to the store (it really doesn't matter which in this over-saturated world) where the Princess, the Frog and everybody else in the movie was highlighted.
Heck, there is even 'Princess and The Frog' Spaghetti O's.
Still, it's fun. It's nice to see children excited. Sure, this time of year they are always excited, but that seems a little different.
Anyway, we were dutifully at the movie theater Friday night (along with about 10,000 other little girls and their families).
I was expecting the usual Disney stuff. We'd have a princess, a prince, they'd dance and everything would work out perfectly.
To my shock, though, it was a rather entertaining movie. The music was well done, the story was actually a little out of the Disney box and the characters actually seemed like real people.
The final test was the opinion of the 5-year old's brothers.
Their reaction: Two thumbs up.
Now I have to find prince material.

Rise and Shine --- New moon? Isn't that in the sky

Good Morning and welcome to the crispness that is Wednesday morning!

The last couple of days (months?) we've been inundated with photos, interviews and videos about the latest 'Twilight' saga.
Apparently, this one is called 'New Moon' and it has something to do with vampires and werewolves.
At least that's what I can garner from the previews. Looks like a slick made movie, but one I know I'll never see, not that I have an inclination to see it anyway.
Sometimes, there are just those things you don't get. They can put out stories about the stars. They can put out books about the movie. They can put the book that inspired the movie in the front of the bookstore. It doesn't matter.
Of course, it probably doesn't matter to the makers of New Moon anyway. I'm not exactly the age group they are going after. They are making tons of money from teenage girls.
If I want a vampire and werewolf fix, I'm popping 'Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein' in the VCR (yeah, it still works). Maybe I'm the right demographic for that classic.

Rise and Shine --- Traveling

Good Morning and, yes, I broke down and put the heat on last night!

Sometimes we travel. Sometimes, we even travel far enough it takes an airplane to get there.
Even though most airlines have done away with movies on flights (at least free ones), I was thinking what would be the best movies to watch if heading on a long trip.
Here are some hopes:
1. Old School. Yeah, I know, it wouldn't fly with everybody (pun intended), but it will certainly make those hours sitting in the tiny seats a bit more comfortable.
2. Bourne Identity. Especially if you are heading overseas with an iPhone in hand and a mysterious look.
3. Joe vs. The Volcano. Nothing like a feel-good Tom Hanks movie to get you fired up about your trip.
4. The Terminal. Never mind, airlines don't have a sense of humor. Neither do passengers after about four hours or so.
5. Lord of the Rings. Not just one, but the whole trilogy. You will be able to fall asleep during the middle run. If not, it will certainly kill a lot of time.
6. Mr. Bean's Holiday. You're stuck next to somebody snoring badly who keeps passing gas. At least you can escape with somebody who had a worse time.
7. Some Like it Hot. Palm trees. Marilyn Monroe. Jack Lemmon at his best. Nothing would make the trip go smoother. Then again, 'Well, nobody's perfect.'
8. Cars. Yeah, you're in a big airplane. The air is sour. The food stinks. The bathrooms are too small. Nothing like a movie about talking cars to get you through the night.
9. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, if your really tired or really inot outer space, this is the perfect movie. Long, slow, boring, but great visuals. Just get a pillow with your headphones.
10. The U.S. vs. John Lennon. OK, there would never be a documentary on an airplane. Besides, Lennon preaching about peace among all people would undoubtedly tick some people off. You don't need that on a plane.
By the way, if this movie comes on, ask for an eye mask and ear plugs, because you are stuck in a time warp:

Rise and Shine --- Movie making

Good Morning and welcome back to the Internet!

The rules of parenting have changed over the years.
Those of a certain age might remember the paddle. They might remember white gloves. They might remember getting dressed up for every occasion. They might remember walking home from school alone. They might remember going outside with no parental supervision.
There was a time when parents were supposed to be disciplinarians. You might remember having to clean your room every day. You might remember continually saying 'Yes sir' and 'Yes, Maam.' Never saying 'No.'
The times change. Now, you can't let your children out of your sight. You can't let them play outside alone, forget about walking home from school or hopping on a bike to go to a friends house.
It's the nature of the world and, well, whether we like it or not, it's the way things have to be done.
Still, with school pressure starting in first grade, children need an outlet. So, we might let them go crazy at home. They can play. They can create. They can run around in the house.
Of course, that leads to broken things and, more often than not, toys throughout the house.
Staying on top of things while working is virtually impossible. You do the best you can and keep trying.
Right or wrong, the children run the roost at our house. Sure, they have 'jobs' to get done each week. Most times they get done, sometimes not.
Where is all this going, well, over the weekend the 7-year old decided he wanted to be a movie director.
He has an idea for the movie in his head. He is recruiting his brother, sister, friends and even the dogs as actors.
It's an interesting story about good guys, bad guys and a search for pirate treasure (I think).
So, we'll let him get the story done and see where it goes.
There's just one part about a burning house that may need to be edited out.

Rise and Shine --- Rain, rain go away

Good Morning and welcome to another day for ducks!

OK, now we remember the downfall of spring. After emerging from the dark, dank winter, we were treated to a great early spring. There was a lot of sun. There was warm (hot?) temperatures. There were fun times to be had outside.
Then, this weekend we got the rain. And more rain. And more rain.
It seemed like every minute of the day was saddled with cloud cover and the wet stuff. OK, it got nice late Saturday afternoon, but then it turned back into rain.
Now, there's nothing wrong with rain. When it's nasty outside, it gives you a chance to take a Sunday break. Relax. Watch a few movies (something for everybody, say, Spider-Man 2, Bedtime Stories and Aladdin) and take your time for once.
The downfall, though, is there is a jungle starting to emerge on the lawn. We all know the grass grows quicker this time of year, but, add in a few inches of water and, bang, its up to your knees.
Of course, it's raining, so you can't get out and cut it down. So, it just keeps growing. Pretty soon, you'll lose a small child in the 'trees.'
When it finally stops raining (they are hoping some time Wednesday), it will be time to get out the sickle.

Rise and Shine --- Making the best of Swine Flu

Good Morning and welcome back to another Thursday (yes they keep coming)!

So, you're sitting at home with Swine Flu (or Whooping Cough) and have nothing to do but feel miserable. Well, you would be wrong on that account.
Have a friend head to the video store for this Swine Flu movie festival:
1. Outbreak. Who better than Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman to save the day? If nothing else, they get to wear cool suits.

2. The Stand. Anybody who has read this Stephen King book is drawn in by the good-vs.-evil plot. The Devil vs. an Angel. Gary Sinise vs. Jamie Sheridan. More important, though, is none of us knew at the time that King is a modern-day Nostradamus. That's right. King wrote about an out-of-control flu virus that takes out most of the world despite the government trying to calm the waters by denying its existence. Hmmm. The biggest drawback: Molly Ringwald is also one of the saviors.

3. 28 Days Later. So, we have a bug that turns people into zombies. Sounds like it's already infiltrated the Republican Party.

4. The Omega Man Forget Will Smith's remake, you want Charlton Heston to be the last man standing with one heck of a cool car. On second thought, forget about it. Smith packs more action.

5. 24: Season 3. Just pop in the DVD and you're good for 24 hours of Jack Bauer craziness. You have drug dealers, virus, the Mummy and travel that takes days for us normal people is done in less than an hour. Besides, there are no commercials, so it's a bit less than 24 hours.

You can thank me later, after the antibiotics.

Rise and Shine --- Great or scary?

Good Morning and welcome back to the work week!

Here's hoping you had as much fun as I did this weekend. It certainly was Lush and there was a great dessert.
There always seems to be another list of the 'The greatest movies of all-time.' Those lists are broken down into comedies, action movies, musicals and the like (we'll stop there before searches start sending red lights to powers above).
One of the movies on the lists is 1967's 'The Graduate.' Now, I try to see the movies on 'greatest' lists if only because it's a fun thing to do.
Up until now, though, I'd never really watched 'The Graduate.' It's been touted as great from Roger Ebert to some Norwegian reviewer.
After finally seeing the whole movie, here's another quick review: scary.
Now, if you've seen the film, you know the story. If you haven't, well, check out the reviews above.
Anyway, what struck me as strange was how the Dustin Hoffman character is actually a stalker. Is he really that far from Travis Bickle?
After sleeping with his girlfriend's mother, he falls into a depression, then trails her around Cal-Berkley. He hides in the bushes to watch her. He looks out windows with binoculars. He runs after buses. He even scares Mr. Roper.
Maybe it's a view of a simpler time. Maybe it should be taken that way. Maybe it's just dated and doesn't play in the reality of this world.
Today, Ben Braddock would be arrested and drawing pictures in prison.
Anyway, that's just one opinion.

Rise and Shine --- 100 things to do

Good Morning and welcome back to the mist!

We've had 100 places to see before you die, 100 songs to hear before you die and 100 books to read before you die.
Now, since we never have enough lists, there is 100 moves to see before you die.
Now, I'm sure they are all good movies and such, but, really, I've never understood how you can rank movies. Much like art, movies are in the eye of the beholder.
You can tell good writing when you read it (like you get here every day), you can tell good music when you hear it and it's always cool to travel.
Movies, though, are different. Somebody might like 'The Red Balloon' (not on the list), while somebody else might like 'Point Break' (also not on the list).
What's the point? Well, sometimes it's better to have no point.
Just enjoy (this is from the list):

Rise and Shine --- Trailing the Oscars

Good Morning and welcome to the end of the week!

So, after sitting through 15 minutes of movie trailers, it's time to make those Oscar picks. Now, granted, it may not be the most scientific way to figure out the best movie, but it beats shelling out $10 for every ticket.
So, here we go:
Best Picture: MILK The preview has a lot of action and music. It also holds the best line of they year: "You have to give them hope." That's something we all need in this day and age.
Best Animated Feature: WALL-E Not only does the trailer give you a great look at the story, it also makes you want to see the movie. When it opens. The first day. Lots of fun.
Best Director: FROST/NIXON Whenever you get a chance to vote for Opie Cunningham, take it.
Beat Actor: Sean Penn in Milk. See above.
Best Actress: Melissa Leo, Frozen River Never heard of the movie before watching the trailer, but it appears to show a story that could be any one of us.
Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder Sure, Heath Ledger is probably going to get the award, but, in three minutes, Downey gives the performance of a lifetime.
Supporting Actress: Viola Davis, Doubt Just a powerful performance.
Now, the trailer of the year:

Rise and Shine ---- Oscar, bloscar

Good Morning and welcome to Thursday!

So, the Oscars are this Sunday. Make sure you enter our Oscar contest HERE. The winner gets a $50 gift certificate to Stephen's on Main Street in Media. Not only that, but you will get a personal phone call from Daily Times entertainment guru Jim Atkins.
Anyway, back to the Oscars. Do the Academy Awards really mean anything any more?
Having not seen any of the films nominated for best picture (the only movies I've seen this year are Wall-E and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Get the picture?), I wonder if they are the really the best films of the year. Sure, they are most likely pretty good. I hope to see most when they roll out on DVD, but none can be considered 'big hits.'
Yeah, in these times we are scrimping on entertainment, but they haven't been able to hold a ticket-sale flag to some other movies out there.
All of the Oscar nominated films are still in theaters. Only 'Slumdog Millionaire' has been able to crack the Top 10 in ticket sales this past week.
Not to say movies like 'Friday the 13th,' 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' or 'The Pink Panther 2' are great movies, but they are what people want to see.
Yeah, we all agree some movies are better than others, but if nobody's watching does it really matter?
By the way, since all you gentle readers are sitting on the edge of your seats, I'll pick the Oscar winners after watching the trailers only in Friday's Rise and Shine.
Here are some funny moments from the Oscars:

Rise and Shine --- Movie connections

Good Morning and bundle up!

During a conversation in the newsroom yesterday the subject of movies came up (how it got from typewriters to movies is another, very long, story) and there was talk about the new Steve Martin movie 'The Pink Panther 2.'
The movie is a sequel to the 'The Pink Panther' which was a remake of 'The Pink Panther' which was one of the funniest movies ever made.
Now, having seen all the original Pink Panther movies several times, I never really felt the need to see the Steve Martin remake. Really, the originals (there were four really worth seeing), staring Peter Sellers are great movies. They are funny. They are outlandish. They are a good way to escape.
At least for some.
Now, a few years ago as a Christmas gift, I received the DVD box set of all the movies. So, having enjoyed these movies so much, I gathered the family around and popped the first one into the player.
Of course, moments into the movie, I was laughing like crazy, nearly falling off the couch.
The rest of the family? Well, if they could have fallen asleep they would have. If they laughed once throughout the movie, I missed it. For some reason, it didn't connect.
I have a feeling, though, they would find the Steve Martin remake very funny.
Why? There are mysteries out there that can never be solved.
At least I can get the boys to watch the 'Three Stooges.'

Rise and Shine --- Big vs. Small screen

Good Morning and welcome back to winter!

OK, now that we are having less and less money for things other than bills and foods, it's time to make choices.
Like movies, for instance. For years, everybody went to the movies. You saw anything and everything. It was a cool experience. You got popcorn, some kind of drink and sat in comfy seats for a couple of hours.
Now, though, even though box office numbers appear high, there are less and less of us going to the movies. Now, instead of paying insanely high prices for the movie, popcorn and drink, we head out to Blockbuster or wait for them to come on television.
For the most part, though, are we really missing anything. Sure, movies like the 'Dark Knight' might look a lot better on the big screen, but they don't lose much on a television screen. Plus, you can get all those cool behind-the-scenes things.
Here are the top five movies of the week. I dare you to try to tell me one of them needs to be seen at the theater.
1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop
2. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
3. Gran Torino
4. Hotel for Dogs
5. Slumdog Millionaire
Just wait for the video (or cable showing) and you can relax.
Yeah, it's still cool to head to the movies and we all do that once in a while, but with the invention of high-def and DVDs, we don't have to feel so bad about waiting.
Plus, there isn't any need to pay for a babysitter.
Then again, I could be wrong...

Rise and Shine --- Holiday showings

Good Morning and welcome to the day before the day before the day before the night before Christmas!

While it can be kind of annoying and frustrating, it is good to see this time of year has the same magic to children today as it did in years past. Sure, there are economic troubles, too many guns on the street, too many people losing their jobs, but you can forget all of that by looking into the eyes of a 4-year old as she talks about Christmas.
They can't wait. They annoy their parents. The Santa Claus threat holds no water. So, just try to enjoy it all.
Speaking of enjoyment, turn on the DVD player and check out this list of good holiday fare to calm everybody down until the big day. (Don't look for 'It's a Wonderful Life.' Boring, boring, boring).
5. Elf. One of the funniest and funnest movies to watch about Christmas in a long time. Sure, there are the usual messages about hope and Christmas, but, most of all, it's just goofy. Goofy enough for parents and children.

4. Christmas Carol (1999). Sure, there are classic versions. One staring George C. Scott is a favorite of everybody. Billy Murray's take in Scrooged was fun, but this television version starting Patrick Stewart is very entertaining. It doesn't bog down too much in the back stories. It just gets to the ghosts and shock.

3. Ernest Saves Christmas. Many believe this is the best Earnest movie ever made. Others think Jim Varney should have won his long-awaited Academy Award. Many, many others have never seen it. While parents can catch a nap, the little ones will be glued to the screen. That, of course, is the whole point.

2. Miracle on 34th Street. Sure, it's a bit dated. Sure, you are asked to make a huge stretch out of reality. Sure, it's a big commercial. Still, it's all about Christmas. Really, what more is there?

1. Christmas Vacation. Before heading over the relative's house for dinner, or welcoming them into your home, check out the trials and tribulations of the Griswold family. What's the best test of a movie? Well, if you can watch it 1,000 times and still laugh at the same jokes. That's 'Christmas Vacation.' Remember when Clark was locked in the attic as the family went shopping. Sure, there was the sappy family video, then, bang, somebody opened the door and he fell right out. Classic.

So, head to the malls. Get that last bit of shopping done. Then, pour some tea and enjoy. You can thank me later.

Rise and Shine --- Streaming live?

Good Morning and welcome back to Tuesday!

One day to go before the World Series. I presume the Super Bowl is about a week away.
Really, doesn't it seem a little ridiculous how far the baseball playoffs are stretched now. Just think about it, when the Phillies won in 1980, Game 6 was Oct. 22. This year, Game 1 is Oct. 22. We may not have a winner until we wake up on Halloween.
Talk about trick or treat.
By the way, there are some pretty good Halloween decorations out there these days. Sure, they seem a bit over the top, but that's what Halloween has become. It used to be just a day for children to dress up and walk around, now it's a month-long celebration with all kinds of crazy costumes for adults and children.
I guess some people have enough money to spend hundreds on a Halloween costume and, sure, dressing up is fun, but come on. Remember when we used to grab something out of our parent's closet, throw it on and call it a costume.
Now, there are full-body Clone Trooper (Star Wars) costumes. There are full face Frankenstein costumes. There are crazy clowns. All kinds of things.
Anyway, I digress, back to the issue at hand. If you want to see the coolest decorated house around go to the corner of Drexel Ave. and Bloomfield Ave. in Drexel Hill. The people who live there have redone their entire house to look like a haunted house, complete with a hearse in the front yard and flashing lights in the windows. I'll try to get a picture later this week.
Well, that's that. Here are today's Halloween song and movie:
First, sing along to:

Then run out to get scared by:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning gentle readers!

So, to take a break from anything serious this weekend, we rented the movie 'School of Rock' with Jack Black. It's kind of funny, definitely better than other Jack Black movies. It's also kind of neat to think all the students in the movie played their own music. Something many adult 'groups' can't do any more.
Here's the trailer

Anyway, as part of the DVD extras was a music video for the 'big' song in the movie.
Sitting there with the boys, we suddenly realized they had never seen a music video.
Now, if you grew up in the 80s or 90s, music videos were as much a part of the song as the actual music.
MTV was the biggest thing on the air, but when they actually played the music. Everybody who was anybody had a music video. You couldn't sell the album or single without the video.
They started out simply as the band or singer just jumping around and such, but quickly became mini-movies. It culminated with Michael Jackson's Thriller, which actually was a movie.
I remember when that video was going to debut. We all rushed home from school to check it out. MTV scheduled it to run every few hours and you knew the schedule.
So, since MTV no longer actually shows videos, it was off to an Internet search for some of those classics. Now, they are funny and the boys were bored after about five seconds.
They didn't get the point. Questions came about the meaning of the video, what they were doing in the video, why they weren't playing the music, etc.
I guess the time has passed. Still, it was fun while it lasted.
Here are a couple of good ones:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

Was flipping around the TV Channels (more than 57 channels, nothing's on and Larry Mendte's still out of work) before gathering everybody for bed when I came across the Marx Brothers' movie 'Horse Feathers.'
The plot, much like in most Marx Brothers movies, doesn't really matter. It was just a chance for everybody to laugh. If you've seen the movie, you know what I mean. If you haven't, run out and get a copy. It might be one of the funniest movies ever.
Anyway, while watching the movie, it became pretty obvious the boys were not interested. Anybody who has boys aged 9 and 6 know right away when something is not touching their fancy.
They, along with the Princess, wanted to watch something animated. Doesn't matter what, if it's animated it must be a children's show, right?
So, they were squirming, finally, one asked, "Daddy, what's wrong with the TV?"
Nothing, why?
"It's broken."
It's not broken, there's a good movie on.
"No, it's broken. There's no color. We can't watch anything without color, it gives me a headache."
Just watch the movie.

Well, the viewing lasted about five more minutes before it became obvious my attempt at getting them to watch something a little different wasn't going to work. So, it was off to bed.
The next day, there was a conversation in the office about movies. We have come to a time where movies are bigger and badder. The computer generation makes anything possible. Sure, there are smaller movies still being made, but they don't make a lot of money. Instead, junk like 'Transformers' or 'Alien vs. Predator' dull our senses.
We have advanced technologically enough that old films look quaint and 'cause headaches.'
I'll have to keep fighting the fight.

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

While searching around for some good reads, I found this.
The question is: If a giraffe can lead a revolution, what's next?
It's funny because anything involving animals doing something different is funny. Just look at the movies, this summer there's going to be a movie about chimps going to space and another about little dogs taking over the world.
Why do we find animals so funny?
Then again, anything's worth a laugh.
Imagine if the lions and tigers at the zoo got together one night and decided to take over. They would be unstoppable.
How about if the circus elephants wanted to take a walk? Would you stand in the way?
How about if apes took over society? Wait, that already happened:

By the way, while that's great, this is better:

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

A quick review:
Saw the movie 'Wall-E' at the theater Saturday afternoon.
Now, it's a pretty big deal, because with three little ones, an excursion to the movies is a huge undertaking. It has to be the right movie that will appeal to a 9-year old boy, a 6-year old boy and a 3-year old girl.
Believe it or not, those movies don't come around all the time. Plus, it has to appeal to the parents of the three so the 'it looks like a good video movie' doesn't come across their lips.
Thank God for Pixar. The movie company makes cool looking animated movies that has just enough to run across the age groups. Which, when you are talking about a 3-year old, means she can sit still for a quarter of the movie.
Anyway, 'Wall-E,' for those, you know, not in the know, is about the last robot on a trash-filled earth. Apparently, the humans, having finally trashed the planet, escaped in space have been floating around the final frontier for about 700 years.
Every once in a while, the humans send back probes to see if life has resurfaced on Earth.
Well, 'Wall-E' finds a plant during his trash-compacting duties. He comes in contact with the probe, becomes friends, goes to space, has some adventures, comes back and is saved by his new friend (girlfriend?).
Although there isn't a lot actual dialogue, the beeps and bumps of the robots say a lot and there is no loss in the story.
The most ironic thing about the movie is the subtle (well, banging over the head actually) message of overindulgence.
A company (Walmart, Disney) pushed so many needless products onto consumers they had no place to put all the trash. It took over the streets, oceans, everything.
That the movie was financed by Disney makes it all the more ironic.
You can't walk into any store without being beat over the head with Disney princesses. Believe me, there is no store around that doesn't have something with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle and their friends smiling from a cup or dish or toothbrush or toilet paper.
It's a good movie to check out, but think, 'What is going to happen to all that trash?'

Rise and Shine

Good Morning, Delaware County!

So, while the Phillies bats were sleeping last night, I was able to check out a show put on by the American Film Institute that counted the Top 10 movies in different kinds of genres. You know, the Top 10 westerns, Top 10 comedies, Top 10 gangster films, etc.
All the usual suspects were there, including the 'Usual Suspects.' Of course, we were going to see 'The Godfather,' 'Raging Bull,' '2001,' blah, blah, blah.
The thing about great movie lists is pretty much everybody agrees what the great movies are and they are all going to be there. Sure, it was interesting to see some of the stars of the movies talk about them, but they were quick interviews and we were moving on to the next number.
There are movie lists everywhere nowadays. We have the best movie kiss, the best movie villains, the best movie heroes. Again, blah, blah, blah.
So, while thinking about it, we need some new movie lists. So, to help you with your summer viewing lists, here are few.

The Top 10 Jim Varney movies

10. Earnest goes to camp; 9. Earnest saves Christmas; 8. Earnest Goes to Splash Mountain; 7. Earnest Rides again; 6. Slam Dunk Earnest; 5. Earnest Goes to Africa; 4. Earnest in the Army; 3. Earnest goes to School; 2. Beverly Hillbillies; 1. Earnest goes to Jail.

The Top 10 Movies Filmed in Delaware County

Rise and Shine

GOOD MORNING, DELAWARE COUNTY!

Ever wonder why there is so much hype for upcoming movies?
There are stories about people lining up for the new 'Sex and the City' movie for over a week now. The film doesn't officially open until Friday.
I understand being excited about seeing a favorite story or whatever becoming a movie and heading to the theater.
But still, lining up a week before the showing?
Of course, this isn't the first time its happened and it won't be the last.
I remember, way back in time, when the 'Empire Strikes Back' was scheduled to come out. People lined up the day of the movie, got the tickets and sat down to watch.
Of course, when the 'Return of the Jedi' came out, there were longer lines and they started earlier. Still, unless I've blocked it from my mind, I don't remember the lines starting a week before the opening.
No, this is a more 'recent' thing. When the next batch of Star Wars movies started coming out, there were lines ahead of the opening. Of course, those lines also contained many people dressed as their favorite characters, so ...
Back in my youth, I stood in a couple of lines overnight. Once was to see Bruce Springsteen play at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh and another was to see the Rolling Stones play the Vet. At the time, it seemed worth it and kind of fun, especially when the beer started flowing and the pizzas were delivered.
Movies, though, are a different animal. They will probably be in the theaters through the summer, so there is plenty of time to see it.
Maybe I'm missing something with 'Sex and the City.' I only saw the show once and found it pretty boring. I'll probably never see the movie.
Then again, with gas prices out of hand and an unneccesary war still going on in Iraq, maybe we all need a break.
I'll be on the lookout for a few people dressed like Batman over the next few weeks.
