Making Rent

Ed, I am a senior citizen in Trenton. I’m also a renter. Could anyone tell me how much a landlord can raise your rent each year, you know, percentage-wise. It would be a help for me to know as well as anyone else who rents in the area. Thank you.

Usually, whatever the market will bear. See if your landlord will negotiate.—Ed. Note

Supposedly, the amount of rent a person is charged is tabulated by the square footage in the room. There should only be a specific amount of space around a person, thus the amount of people who can reside in an average appartment. This should determine the amount of rent charged per unit.
However, landlords in the city of Trenton (which has been my experience) seldom if ever adhere to any real or realistic rule or specifications. All they want is money. Most times, the money their asking has nothing to do with any sort of regulation or building code. They just randomly charge the market rate, (what they consider is reasonable for their pocket). Question, was your appartment inspected before you moved in? If not, it should have been, by law. This is very important information everyone should know. Most of these absentee landlords, charge hugh amounts of money for their rat holes and take the money and run. I suggest you call the city inspectors and find out if the landlord even had the right to rent the property in the first place. You'd be surprised what these people are getting away with these days, as they continually raise rents on properties that should be condemned. This supposedly was going to be one of Palmers pet peeves. He was going to have all rental properties inspected and any and all violations were going to be repaired in a timely fashion.
Guess we all know where that idea went. Anyhow contact the Dept of Human Services, welfare division (no you don't have to be on welfare) however they can tell you what market rates are in this city.
Or perhaps contact the MAYORS OFFICE and ask him, why the absentee landlords are being allowed to rip off the residents in this city.

They need to contact Community Affairs landlord Tenent 609-292-6420. The landlord can only charge you a certain percentage. There are also websites that can help.
