Calling Drivers

Ed, about this cell phone ban New Jersey is supposed to have. I see people every day driving around talking on their cell phones. Maybe they should hire a task force of just regular people like ticket takers to drive around and give tickets to these people. People assume they are not going to get caught. They drive around real slow and are not paying attention. Maybe they should raise the fine to $1,000 and maybe they will get the point.
Hang Up
I don’t like the idea of an army of not-quite-cops out there with the power to pull me over. It could get ugly.—Ed. Note

Definitely agree with the writer on the lack of enforcement. Although overall the law has been somewhat effective - some people just won't use the phone because it is illegal, and that helps. The task force idea is probably not a good one, but having more police writing more tickets might work. It pays for itself.
For those who need a good hands-free solution, check out www.EasyHandsFree.com which is a company that installs bluetooth systems into your car. I have one, and it works great - I never have to touch my cell phone, but can make and take calls while keeping my hands on the wheel and there's nothing on my head or to hold, so I can keep alert to traffic around me. I got cut off Monday on 78 by a guy who was holding his phone up to his right ear, so he could not turn to see me in the middle lane just off his bumper. He should have had an EasyHandsFree system, like me.

No need to increase fine. Just have the enforcers stop using phones (those in blue and it ain't the 2-way that they are using) and give good example. Also have them rambo down and really collect $$$ for the town's coffers - you'll see cell phone use stop. Look at Pennington and it's 5 over and you got a ticket!
And, by the way ... when are the enforcers going to start pulling cars over with side front tinted windows? And, when are they going to start pulling over NJ cars who have no NJ plates on front? NJ cars like the "clean look and don't want to mess that up, so no plate on front"! Lots of $$$ to be collected. Just gotta get the enforcers to start enforcing what is on the book!

I agree mostly with everything said. I think a stiffer fine is necessary. That's what people care about! I think it's more that people involved in their conversation than holding something that is the problem. That said, though, I see people reading, eating, applying make-up and using laptop computers while driving. Why is it illegal to operate a cell phone but, legal to do the others? Police need to be more vigilant. The courts also need to support the officers better.
