Games of the Week
I had hoped this post would be up earlier. It wouldn't have been up at all had it not been for a Herculean effort by the Marist sports information staff, which got my computer through 9 million hurdles and in to the elusive Marist wireless network.
So just as tonight's game are about to tip, my games of the week:
5. Canisius at Siena, tonight, 7 p.m.
With the way they're steamrolling everyone in the MAAC, I'd give the 15 points and take the Saints. But I'm interested to see if Canisius can do what no MAAC team has been able to do: Keep a game competitive past halftime at the Times Union Center.
4. Niagara at Saint Peter's, tonight, 7 p.m.
The Eagles played 20 very good minutes and 20 lackluster minutes Saturday at Siena, and have been similarly erratic for a large portion of the year. This is the kind of game that elite MAAC teams win by five or six points, but vulnerable teams sometimes lose. I think Niagara is in the first category, but I need a little more evidence.
3. Iona at Loyola, tonight, 7 p.m.
The Gaels went into Lawrenceville Saturday and blew Rider's doors off in a thumping reminiscent of the one Siena delivered in December. A win tonight and Scott Machado and Co. would be 3-3 with a manageable schedule heading into the second half of the league season. As for the Hounds, it'd be awfully hard to avoid the play-in round after a 1-5 start.
2. Niagara at Iona, Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
Everything written above also applies to this one, but with added emphasis on the importance for both teams. Iona would be in OK shape considering their relatively low expectations with a split in its next two games. But winning BOTH, and securing a season sweep of Niagara, would firmly put them in the camp of top-level teams.
1. Siena at Fairfield, Saturday, 4 p.m.
The Stags are unbeaten at home and playing better than anyone could have imagined, but their five MAAC wins have all come against teams that will finish in the middle of the pack or worse. An upset here would give them a signature win and, as important, a spot atop the conference standings along with the Saints. Upset, though, is the operative word. Though its a battle of the top two teams in the standings, the Stags will need to play a nearly perfect game to win.
