The Fresh Grocer
I reported yesterday that execs from The Fresh Grocer will tour Coatesville on Wednesday to decide whether they want to put a store in the eventual Flats development.
My story has generated a lot of commentary.
There are those who were cautiously optimistic about the idea of The Fresh Grocer coming to the city:
"Lord knows they need some (supermarkets). Why would anyone be against a super market coming to town? Especailly if it will be on a plot of land that is currently empty." (Posted by: Finally some good news for Coatesville)
And there are those who feel that, because The Fresh Grocer targets the working and lower-middle classes, Coatesville could do better:
"No I'm sorry but just having a supermarket (any) is not better then having a top end one. I understand that we haven't had any for a while but if we are going to do this right then why can't we push to have decent grocery store? How is that too much to ask? (Posted by: No, we expect better)
Many people have never heard of The Fresh Grocer - its stores are in Philadelphia, Upper Darby Township and Wilmington, but not in Chester County. This has led some to assume that the store is no good. I can't vouch for other locations, but when I lived in Philly I used to shop at the Fresh Grocer on Penn's campus (40th and Walnut) and was pretty happy with it. The prices were low and the products were not much different than the ones I now get at Acme.

Any development on the flats is still just a pipe dream. The developers wants Coatesville to pay for the environmental clean up! God only knows how much that will cost! So what is the easy way out? Sell them the land for a real bargain and let them pay for the cleanup ?? Although that is a good location that ground is junk!
I await the rewritten proposal.
Why would you bring in a low end grocery store to the city? Are you asking all of us hard working upper middle class to leave??? It is a trash city and that will only make it worse, my as well be in the city. Disgusting idea!!!!!!!
Almost as bad as the people who still insist that a power plant is a great idea. Just as long as it isn't in their backyard!
Coatesville does'nt deserve nothing but a fleet of bulldozers to level the city! Gimme, gimme, gimme, get out and get real jobs you bunch of lazy asses.
Wow how long did it take you to come up with that thought? Go and get real jobs eh? Well I have a real job my neighbors have 'real jobs' and a lot of people in Coatesville have real jobs. We pay our taxes and try to do better. Of course clowns like you think we all just sit around and do nothing but live in Section 8 houses and live off food stamps. Sorry buddy but I've worked too damn hard to ask for hand outs and so have a lot of people here. Its just sad that ignorant people like you think that we're all the same. Oh well go find another blog since you don't live here and keep your stupid comments to yourself.
I think a grocery store, any grocery store would be a welcome addition to a city that currently doesn't have one. It would also give the citizens a chance to show that they can responsibly patronize a local business. The perception of a criminal atmosphere in Coatesville continues to make many businesses leary of opening there. A grocer may give the residents a chance to prove that they won't shoplift or rob the business out of existence. It sometimes only takes one, larger business to get a foothold for others to follow.
In our current economy, I don't see any way Coatesville is going to have some grand developer come in and build a residential and commercial showplace, in spite of the all the presentations they have made in the past. All want a completely pristine site with the City picking up the cleanup tab and putting in roads for them. Of course, there is no money for that. It is more likely that future development in Coatesville will have to be one bold entrepreneur at a time opening and oftimes failing until the mix is right. Only then will housing follow and it won't be until the economy improves.
Was suprised to read Friday's DLN headline that there have been FORTY armed robberies of citizens and stores this year so far!! I run a shop in Coatesville and hope I am not next. Just what we needed to read and find out. This will probably chase away anyone that was thinking of starting a biz in town. I hope they catch these knuckleheds before some one gets shot!
Coatesville would be lucky to have ANY business open in the city. The violence is scary enough to stop most from even dreaming of opening anything up. If they're offering, ACCEPT! You might not have many other options.
Coatesville is in need of upgrading in many areas..now it would take just one or two new stores in areas like 82 and 30 to make this area a place to live in not moving out of. There are plenty of new homes being built and the residents are not the type that hang out in the local establishments. The traffic is there and property owners would welcome new neighbors. It is a beautiful area.
If you live in Coatesville stop complaining and clean up your city. A grocery store would help the citizens. It is the people surrounding the area that the store is being considered. If you say the city is trash - then you are calling yourself "Trash" - pick yourself up and start a movement to clean up your area and maybe it will catch on. Phoenixville did just that - once you hit bottom, there is only one way to go and that is UP!
Coatesville needs a Hi End (Acme, Giant, Super Fresh) grocery store to attract people from the surrounding communities such as East Fallowfield, Valley, Pomeroy, and West Caln. They have to drive through or around the Coatesville to get to a store. A low end store help will not help redevelopment of the downtown; it will only accelerate the downward spiral the City is on. It has been said before that "Coatesville can be a better place to live and work" if Council and the City Administration work together to accomplish the necessary tasks. Sweep this low end store idea under the rug where it belongs.
Speaking of sweeeping, why not sweep the Walker Administration and the Block of 4 (or should I say 5) out the door in the up and coming elections next year. Our chance for a clean sweep will soon be upon us. Let's git er done.
The poor we will always have amongst us Mr. Walker, especially if you continue to set the bar so low! Stop acting like you don't know what you're doing and strive for more - actually, strive for anything and please get SOMETHING done. How long have you been in your position? And our City Council - hah! - have any of you gone to college and/or possess a working knowledge of finance and planning? Perhaps this is why we keep spinning our wheels and Coatesville remains a dangerous, unappealing dump!
Regarding "The Fresh Grocer", I went on their website and they seem to have a great variety to offer and the prices are what we currently pay. Mind you, this was the list of items if you are shopping on the net. Hopefully, their store has as good a variety. In addition to having a closer grocer for inner city residents as well as East Fallowfield, Ercildoun and other parts of South Coatesville, this store will create a few more jobs within the city. That cannot not hurt.
And for the theft factor, in our country today, it doesnt matter where you are. Thieves are everywhere. This will have to be an effort of community as well as employees to keep the theft at a low percentage. The more that gets stolen from the store, the higher the prices go.
We all have to work together.
