The Fresh Grocer
I reported yesterday that execs from The Fresh Grocer will tour Coatesville on Wednesday to decide whether they want to put a store in the eventual Flats development.
My story has generated a lot of commentary.
There are those who were cautiously optimistic about the idea of The Fresh Grocer coming to the city:
"Lord knows they need some (supermarkets). Why would anyone be against a super market coming to town? Especailly if it will be on a plot of land that is currently empty." (Posted by: Finally some good news for Coatesville)
And there are those who feel that, because The Fresh Grocer targets the working and lower-middle classes, Coatesville could do better:
"No I'm sorry but just having a supermarket (any) is not better then having a top end one. I understand that we haven't had any for a while but if we are going to do this right then why can't we push to have decent grocery store? How is that too much to ask? (Posted by: No, we expect better)
Many people have never heard of The Fresh Grocer - its stores are in Philadelphia, Upper Darby Township and Wilmington, but not in Chester County. This has led some to assume that the store is no good. I can't vouch for other locations, but when I lived in Philly I used to shop at the Fresh Grocer on Penn's campus (40th and Walnut) and was pretty happy with it. The prices were low and the products were not much different than the ones I now get at Acme.
