CORNELL 78, OWLS 65

Cornell takes on the Wisconsin-Wofford winner.

For Cornell, Louis Dale had 21 points, Ryanb Wittman: 21 points.

Dunphy is about to fall to 1--11 ...

... in NCAA Tournament games. And Dunph will be 22-2 against former assistants. Fran O'Hanlon, who began his head coaching career at Bonner, was head coach of Lafayette when he beat Dunphy.

Brooks driving dunk and foul shot ...

would have gotten the Owls started in the first half. With less than four minutes left and Cornell holdding a 16-point lead, it's too little, too ... you know the rest.

Fernandez to bench as Owls go small ...

... And Foote, the 7-footer, promptly makes a three-point play to give Cornell a 74-56 lead with 4-minutes-plus remaining.
It's one of thost days.
Dunphy subs Fernandez for Guzman.

Owls shooting 59 percent ...

... and trailing by 18 points. The most they were behind this season i14 points. And they bounced back to defeat Villanova.

Big Red matches Owls starts

The Owls dominated the first five minutes of each half on their way to their third straight A-10 tournament championship.
They've been dominated or matched in those segments today.
After getting beaten inside in the first half, the Owls dared Red to launch from beyond the arc in the second half.
Cornell has made four treys in the second half, three by Wittman.
And, yes, his father Randy shot Indiana to an NCAA Tournament championship in 1981.

Owls getting to the basket in Second Half

It's pretty obvious what Dunphy told the Owls at the intermission:
Take the ball to the goal.
With Fernandez getting three baskets, and Eric two, the Owls scored on seven of their first eight possessions to pull within 51-44 with 14:33 left. All of those points came challenging the big man.
At the same time the Owls withstood the bombing of Cornell. Wittman drilled a pair of treys, Chris Wroblewski another to keep Red in front.

Owls trail almost everywhere but turnovers

The Owls were outrebounded, 11-7, and outshot, 68.4 percent-50 percent. The Owls had 9 turnovers, Cornell 6. And the Owls got to the foul line just long enough to make 3 of 4 attempts. Cornell made 9 of 10.
Interestingly Cornell attempted just 7 three-pointers, making 2, compare to 4-for-11 for the Owls. That's right around the 12th seed's seasonal average. Cornell was inaccurately portrayed by many as a team that bombs threes as soon as it gets off the bus.

Halftime: Cornell 37, TU 29

Down 8 points, Owls holding for last shot. Ryan Brooks ... misses a wide-open three. That's the way the first half went. Owls trail, 37-29, at the intermission. Brooks and Fernandez get 8 points each, Moore 4. Eleven points for Louis Dale and 9 for Wittman.

Following the 4-minute TV timeout, Dumphy rapped Cornell after the Owls cut the gap to 31-26. It resulted in a travel by Foote - whistled by his pal Oglesby - and a chance for Ramone Moore to pull TU within 3 points. Moore missed the front half of a one-and-one.

Cornell coach Steve Donahue wisely yanked Foote with 8:11 left after the big guy yjawed at referee Mike Kitts. We'll keep an eye on this. Foote thinks he's being pushed off his spot by Allen and Micheal Eric . And really, he is. But that's tournament basketball.

Owls playing like 12th seed

Fran Dunphy wouldn't wait another minute for the TV timeout, calling his own 'TO" after Juan Fernandez tried to tip the ball to teammate Lavoy Allen, only to result in a Ryan Wittman layup giving Big Red a 19-11 lead with 11:48 left.
Wittman pump-faked Allen into the rafters before rolling in a layup.
Dunphy lit into the Owls pretty good - by his low-key standards.

Foote's statement

Big Red scores 10 of the next 16 points to lead 10-9 at the first TV timeout.
Cornell 7-0 center Jeff Foote has a basket, a blocked shot and a difference of opinion with the officials. He's acting like they're letting the Owls rough him up.
It's surprising Foote didn't get a warning for whipping the ball at referee Terry Oglesby just before that TV timer. He's ready to go off.

Opening tap: 12:31 p.m.

Juan Guzman gives Owls 3-0 lead moments later.

No 'Cos, but Owls celebs are out ...

Among the notable Owls alums taking in their alma mater's opening round game with Cornell - Mark Macon, who led the school to an Elite Eight; President Ann Weaver Hart; and former President Peter Liacouras, who grew up in Yeadon.

Delco coaches hook up in JAX

First it was Steve Donahue, the Cardinal O'Hara graduate by way of Prospect Park.
Then it was Fran Dunphy, with lifelong roots in the area, most recently Villanova, to hit the podium here at the NCAA Tournament's East Regional at Veterans Memorial Arena.
Finally Bo Ryan, the product of Chester High, stepped up to the dais.
The coaches of Cornell, Temple and Wisconsin, respectively all are deeply rooted in Delaware County, and proud of it.
Dunphy kidded that the entire Delaware Valley is full of head coaching material because "They can't do anything else, maybe."
Ryan went a step further.
"Anybody from Philly who sits in the stands thinks they're a coach," Ryan said. "Have you ever met anybody from that area who didn't think they could coach?"
Touche.
