Race in the Race: Small Factor
From today's WSJ:
There are Americans who judge politicians by their race, or gender, or religion; Mr. Obama will certainly carry the black vote in November because he is black and because he is a Democrat. But we reckon that a scant number of voters are motivated by racism, and that number's growing smaller by the day. Virginia elected a black Governor two decades ago, and Illinois has had two black Senators. America has had two black Secretaries of State, and major corporations are run by black CEOs. No other Western democracy has done as well at opening up political, business and other arenas to minorities.
The whole thing here.

I'm in agreement with you on this one, and I believe that at one point, Colin Powell could have been a contender, and would have received wide support from the Republican party. But here's a hypothetical for you. If Colin Powell was running as a Republican against a white candidate, say Clinton, would he receive overwhelming black support? Regardless of who wins, I hope people can vote on the issues, and not the color of ones skin.
It still doesn't stop the "race card" from being used in every situation possible.
My best used example was the Eddie Polec trajedy in 1994 in NE Philadelphia where a High School Senior was beaten to death on the steps of his parish curch by a gang of suburban teens. There were seven individuals tried for their crime - 4-5 were white, maybe 1-2 hispanics and 1 was black. The one black guy's defense? You guessed it, played the race card - despite bashing one's skull with a bat in a "golf swing" motion.

I'm not quite sure how a criminal incident that took place 14 or 15 years ago has anything to do with the race card being used in this election. Like him or not, Obama made it to where he is, through brains and hard work. He didn't grow up with the political clout or the money of Al Gore, Bush, McCain, etc. I see the Obama family as being much like the rest of us - only smarter.
But what about McCain? How many times is he going to play the POW card? He was on Leno the other night. Turns out that he was fed the questions in advance. When asked about the issue (or non-issue) of how many kitchen tables in how many houses, his reply was that he didn't have a kitchen table in Nam. Enough already. I hope these guys get around to talking about real issues and solutions sometime before we have to cast a vote.
bob, I agree, Powell would have received the black vote, and I'm sure certain whites would lean to Clinton. I don't agree with it, but portions of our society act in this manner.
I think Powell would have been a great candidate for president, but I don't believe he wanted the position. Or, maybe, he didn't want to challenge Clinton in 1996 and passed up an opportunity in 2000 as a favor to George H.W. Bush, who knows.
Just as Ms. Ferraro said, Obama has benefited in his political career from being black. He rode the black-for-black vote into office and now he benefits from White guilt-ridden Liberals, the Apologist Liberal Media and brainwashed college kids as the anointed Affirmative Action Candidate. Some Apologist LibDems like Dishonest Dave will actually admit this sometimes, and then turn around and deny it. Lol… And his “change” and “unity” camp is the only side to use race in this election season, both offensively and defensively, depending upon how it serves him at the moment. All while O pretends to rise above it all while really giving his Race Card playing surrogates a wink and nod. Despicable.
As a thread Gil posted here before pointed out, blacks may not vote for Powel. While the Black voting block indeed regularly blindly votes race, he’s not militant enough for them. They want a black but the more militant the better. So they are quite happy with Obama. You better believe that while most people winched, a great many of blacks gave Reverend Wright's offensive words "You go, brotha!" approval.
God, Apologist Dave is really weeping it on thick today! Lol…
Such pretending that racism is worse today than even long ago helps no one.
American blacks have it better here today than at any other time or place in the world.
Blacks are OVER represented in many professional areas. And America is sick and tired of the reverse racism of Affirmative Action and racial scorekeeping quotas, the likes of which the Apologist Daves promote.
The LibDems well know this and yet they have done all they can to prevent We The People from deciding the issue via referendum, here in this democracy.

My point was that if it was Powell against Clinton, and Powell was a Republican, I dont believe that he would get the majority of the black vote.
