Getting frisky

Ed, I read where Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson did not like the idea of stopping and frisking people. But with three cops shot in four days, I wonder if he’s changed his mind. What do you think, Ed?

A stop-and-search without probable cause or “articulable suspicion” doesn’t sound like America to me. It’s easy to be all for martial-law-type tactics until they reach out and bite you. If you begin by eroding the rights of “suspicious-looking” people, or those who dare to walk down the street at the wrong hour, you erode the rights of us all — the rights that the architects of our Republic held sacred and strove to make permanent because they’d experienced a lesser form of existence in a non-free society.—Ed. This is the only reason Nutter was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. He appealed to the citizens relentless call for justice. Yes, Philadelphia is a dangerous place it's obvious, but so is every large city. I just don't think it should have been a major sticking point in a political election. It was the issue on everyone's mind and he took full advantage of it. What people fail to realize is that this is only the first of many civilian abuses to fall out of the can of worms he's opened. These types of tactics under the guise of citizen safety will only mushroom to choosing who else has become annoying or dangerous. Who or what will be next? What colors will we be allowed to wear? Will we pick on certain religious sects? Sexual preferences? Must we all speak a certain language? What streets and neighborhoods can we live in and why? Are we allowed to voice our opinions in certain circumstances? Sounds silly at this point, but these are only some of the issues that evolve in a police state. Remember, once these kinds of constitutional abuses are allowed to exist, it's only a matter of time, before everyone and everything will become effected by it. Plus, some full panel of idiots will get to decide who or what issue will be next.

Anonymous, how right you are. Did anyone ever take the time to read at least part of the United States Constitution? Nutters's Mayorial success in pandering to the fears of the people of Philadelphia will mushroom to other cities. This tactic will quickly be adopted. In an attempt to calm the fears of the citizens, law enforcement will utilize it for everything it's worth. It takes no real planning, or strategic emphasis, its strictly an initiation into a police state. The real problems associated with this will begin in earnest and end in complete failure. Fact is, it's easy to point out the other guy and make sure he's doing the right things, but wait until that finger points back at you.
