There’s a new sheriff in town

Joshua Sophy has taken over as editor of The Hamburg Area Item and is now also blogging at Item Meister, the paper’s new weblog.

Josh hails from the city of Pottsville in Schuylkill County and is the former editor and publisher of the Pottsville Free Press (not to be confused with our own Free Press), a virtually one man operation Josh ran with the help of friends and published successfully if irregularly for about 18 months with a total of 36 editions.

Before that he worked for the same coal region daily where I spent about 10 (feels like 20) years.

I hope Hamburg residents will welcome him to their community. I know he comes to the job with great enthusiasm. I also hope all the readers of our on line products will give Josh’s blog a regular read.

Well, howdy there partner! Y'all seem like nice folk. Sure as reckon glad you is a local man... we don't take kind to strangers 'round here in these parts. So, set yourself down a spell, grab yerself a sassafrassy and some chaw, then put your boots up over at the OK saloon.

Does this mean someone will finally bring law and order to these boards?

Good god, people! How do you expect anyone to take where we live with any seriousness if you use some lame small-town country-bumpkin expressions to introduce people?

The rest of the world already assumes that those that don't live in big cities like Philly or New York are a bunch of hayseeds that live in trailers and marry whatever relative would be considered inbreeding. They already assume we say 'ain't' and 'y'all' and have the basic English skills of someone who uses an outhouse and thinks running water is for the rich.

I'm tired of people spitting on me like I'm not someone just because I don't commute to NYC. Stop with all this "sheriff in town" crap and just report the news. Save your creativity for your screenplays, idiots!

"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons!"

Ahhh... Blazing Saddles! You have to love that movie!

Think of our blogs as a supplement to our main on line news product. An hour or less from Philly, I would hardly call this the boonies.

I can't believe there is actually a newspaper called The Hamburg Area Item! Who came up with that name?! It sounds an old-fashioned phrase used to request condoms from the pharmacist!

Victorian Era customer:Excuse me kind sire, when you refill the penicillan, might you also include a box of The Hamburg Area Item as well?
PharmacistNo problem Old Chap! I'll hide in the bottom of the bag.

I'm a reader of the BergersMont and I agree with the editor on this. Just like I might take a multi-vitamin to make sure I'm getting all the vitamins and minerals I may not be getting from my meals, I use this website as a supplment to make sure I'm not mising a single lick of local news.

Wait! Are you saying that because cities like Quakertown are an hour away from Philly, they AREN'T considered the boonies?!? Have you ever BEEN to Quakertown? I live there and it sucks! The only thing that ever leaves this town sucessfully is a passing breeze... everything else just sticks here like tar in a smoker's lung.

I don't understand the editor's reference to Mexican food. Am I not seeing all the messages?

I mean that Quakertown has at least two great Mexican restaurants that I've had the chance to visit.
