Man sought in Berks homicide

A Lebanon County man is still on the loose after police allege he strangled a mother of six and the sister of a former girlfriend.

Police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of Julio Angel Lastra, 32, charging him with first, second, and third degree murder, burglary, aggravated assault and criminal tresspass in the death of Marisol Rivera, 45, 585 Frystown Rd., Bethel Township.

According to a police affidavit filed with District Justice Andrea Book, Straustown, PA, the victim was heard saying in Spanish “Who is this?” as she was taken from her bed and strangled by Lastra late Sept. 24 or early Sept 25.

Lastra had been in a longterm relationship with Rivera’s sister Mari Reyes since 2001, but had a Protection from Abuse Order filed against him Sept. 22 after Reyes claimed Lastra had tried to kill her on two occasions.

The affadavit states the crime was witnessed by Rivera’s daughter Gianna, 8, who was sleeping with her mother at the time.

Police say Lastra’s sister testified she drove him to a location very close to Rivera’s residence on Frystown Rd. late Sept. 23, but did not know at the time of the significance of the location.

Police say another witness, Sylma Perez, told police she received a phone call from a distraught Gianna Rivera at 1 p.m. Sept. 25, who told her about the attack.

Gianna Rivera later told police she had been asleep in her mother’s bed when she heard Rivera scream and awoke to see a man choking her mother and pulling her to the floor.

Wait! Did he kill two people or one? Your article says he strangled a mother of six and the sister of a former girlfriend. If it's the same woman, you shoild have wrote: " strangled a mother of six, the sister of a former girlfriend.

Who edits this paper... a blind man?

Three weeks ago my cat had eight kittens, that makes her a mother of eight. To maybe he killed a woman and strangled the family pet. I could happen.

Shouldn't the BerksMont give a description of this person in the story? I'm afraid to go outside and do my gardening with this killer on the loose!

I refuse to go out now myself. How do I know I haven't met this guy on the street?!? But isn't the picture on the right of the article the suspect? Or is that the writer? I'm confused by ther design of this site.

If that guy at the right is the killer, I know just where to find him! He hosts that game show Deal Or No Deal every week on the TV!

I'm as confused as Jenny on this one! How many people did he kill? He's charged with first, second, and third degree murder--how can that all be for the same crime? The difference between first and second is usually intent, right? (I'm not a lawyer, but I watch Law and Order every night on A&E) So either he meant to kill someone or he didn't. How can it be both? Did he strangle her without meaning to kill her, then after she died someone revived her and decided to finish the job? And how about third degree murder, that accidental. Did he run over someone with his car while he was trying to get away?

It's been two days, or we going to get a follow-up to this story?

This is another great example of the "drive by" media at work! They show up, report something, create chaos, and pack up and head down the road to do it all over again.

Hey Berks county, a killer stalks your streets. Next week, find out what everyday kitchen ingredient causes cancer!

I just don't like the sound of all this, Edna. Thank you for the tip. Is there any way I can ring the local police if I suspect crime's afoot in my neighborhood?
