Smith taking it slow

Jason Smith is still on crutches nearly two months after surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

That’s taking it slowly.

But the crutches don’t give Smith, the Sixers’ 7-0 forward, a pass on rehab. He’s at the gym in the morning and goes for about two-and-a-half hours, riding a stationery bike and working in the pool.

“The pool is basically my best friend, just a lot of water resistance, low-impact,” Smith said. “A little bit of stuff in the weight room as far as core training, but that’s about it.”

Smith is out for the season after injuring the knee during Tim Grgurich’s camp in Las Vegas this past summer.

SLOAN GIVES JAZZ STABILITY

The Sixers take on Utah tomorrow night and it won't be easy to turn things around against the Jazz.

Utah, which is 5-1, is almost always a good team, and that is in no small way because of coach Jerry Sloan, who became the first NBA coach to win 1,000 games with one team when the Jazz beat Oklahoma City on Friday.

Considering that Sloan is entering his 20th season with Utah that means that the Jazz have averaged 50 wins a season during his tenure.

“A thousand wins, period, is a lot and to get it with one team is a pretty amazing feat,” Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. “No one can understand, from a coach’s point of view, a thousand wins with one team… No one’s ever done it, right? That’s how hard and special that is. No one has ever done it.”

Sloan’s overall record is 1094-718 including a stint in Chicago, but he downplayed the significance of his accomplishment.

“Well, the owner didn’t fire me,” Sloan said deadpan. “Let’s make it simple.”

It is, however, a little more than that. Kyle Korver, the former Sixer who was traded to the Jazz last December, said it’s because of who and what Sloan is.

“I played for a lot of coaches here so to be somewhere where he’s been there that long is amazing to me,” Korver said. “It says a lot about him as a person, as a coach. He has a style that’s a lot different than a lot of coaches are allowed to be. Everyone thinks he’s crazy and yelling all the time, but that’s not the way he is at all. He’s a really good guy. He commands respect and he gives it back as well.”

Atlanta's Smith says it's just a game

When free agency season began on July 1, the Sixers went hard after Atlanta’s Josh Smith.

They brought him to town, wined and dined him, then spurned him when they realized they were a player in the Elton Brand market.

So, did Smith have anything to prove when the Hawks, who eventually matched an offer from Memphis to retain Smith, played against the Sixers.

“It’s just another game other than it being our home opener,” Smith said. “I understand it’s gonna be a sold-out crowd. I just want to motivate our fans. There was a possibility of me going up there, but it didn’t happen. There’s no love lost. I got to meet some people when I was up there visiting.”
