Sixers pick up options on Young, Smith

The 76ers picked up the third-year options on the contracts of Jason Smith and Thaddeus Young, the team announced Monday.
Young, a 6-8, 220-pound swingman out of Georgia Tech, was chosen with the 12th overall pick in the 2007 draft. Last season, he played in 74 games with 22 starts and averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in 21 minutes. His 54.9 field-goal percentage was the highest of any rookie qualifier and he was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.
Smith, a 7-0 foot, 240-pound center, was acquired in a draft-night swap with Miami. In exchange for the rights to Smith, chosen 20th overall, the Sixers sent the rights to 21st pick Daequan Cook, a future second-round pick and cash to the Heat. Smith averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in 14.6 minutes last year, appearing in 76 games. He will miss all of this season after tearing his ACL in August.

Sometimes it's more than hoops

Today was the last day you could register to vote in Pennsylvania.

With that in mind, Sixers’ Director of Basketball Adminstration Allen Lumpkin was reminding members of the team of that after Monday’s practice. For those who hadn’t already registered, he had forms available.

But Lumpkin said most of the players already had taken care of the matter.

Scaling back

After eight hours of workouts in two days, Mo Cheeks decided to cut back on Thursday to one longer session running from 11 a.m. till about 2 p.m.

It’s probably a good idea. By Wednesday, players were feeling the physical twinges that always accompany the start of camp.

Plus, the team will go twice on Friday, including an evening workout on the main court of the Bryce Jordan Center that will be open to the public.

The good news was that Andre Iguodala, who sat out Wednesday with a sprained ankle, was able to take part, even in the scrimmage that concluded practice.

The weather in State College hasn’t been as nice as it is near Philadelphia. In fact, the high today was only supposed to hit 55, and the sun keeps coming and going.

A few of the reporters hit that old Happy Valley standby, The Corner Room, for lunch yesterday. Except for the menu, it’s changed little since I went to school here (we won’t mention how many years ago that was).

Lending a helping hand

Sam Dalembert is the only NBA player from Haiti so he has a unique perspective on what his fellow countrymen are going through.

Already one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti has suffered tremendously after being hit by three hurricanes in one month – Fay, Gustav and then Ike.

It plunged the country into chaos as people not only lost homes and possessions, but often didn’t have enough clean water to drink.

Dalembert has helped in the past, donating more than $70,000 to disaster relief in his home country.

But he’s still in the planning stages on this one.

“I’ve been talking to Unicef over there. I’m going to try to do something with them for the young kids. It’s very difficult. The accessibility for things to go out there to the people (is not good). We’ll wait till things calm down and then go out there and really help.”
