One person was killed and two others were inured at Mittal Steel in South Coatesville after a furnace explosion. See today's Daily Local News for details.
That steel mill is a dangerous place to work, it's not like the old days. it is owned by an overseas outfit and all they want to do is make money, they don't seem too concerned about safety. everything is rush. I worked there for a while and decided it wasn't for me. I feel really bad for the family of the deceased worker.
This accident was very tragic and my prayers are with the families involved.
As for the steel mill being a dangerous place to work, it is no more dangerous than it was 30 or so years ago when the exact same accident happened. Safety is a big concern with management and is dealt with. It isn't the same as when it was Lukens, but it is a good place to work. I'm glad it still exists in Coatesville...that's all we have left.
The same type accident occured in the early 50s also, at the old Open Hearth Furnaces. My Father in Law was badly burned but initially survived. A few years later He died of complications from those injuries. My Father also worked at Lukens as most all of their 5000 plus employees lived in Coatesville back then. Since then the City seems to have moved from Steel to Drugs. Respect to Greed. Cooperation to Destruction and Friendly Hellos to Murders. In 50 years a vibrant City has come to the brink of dispair. Get busy People of Coatesville. Those of you who profess to love the City must begin to stand up and be meaningfully counted. Though I no longer live in the immediate area I hold a soft spot in my Heart for the Old Town. Born and raised there and lived in the immediate area ( West Brandwine Twp ) for 40 more years. I'm sorry I have no voice to lend to your situation.
