We’re all immigrants

Ed, this is about Americans who do not want illegals here. At some point down the generational lines, someone in their families had to migrate to the states. Everyone deserves the opportunity of progress: Italian, Polish, Chinese, Latino.
Non-Native
You know what the response is going to be to that statement. Our grandparents did everything the legal way, learned English immediately, etc. But they miss the spirit of your statement.

Are you kidding me with this. When my father came here and went to school the teachers didn't baby him because he didn't understand the language they told him either learn English or find someone else to teach you. They didn't change the language because most of the kids in the school were Italian. There is a HUGE difference in the way things use to be done to the way things are done now. You can't even compare the two and how dare you try and compare the hard working immigrants that came here to have a better life to the low life illegal's that are just sitting on street corners waiting for checks and feeling sorry for themselves because they thought they were going to have a better life when they snuck into this country.

What part of ILLEGAL don't you understand? Do the illegals work hard - most do, but they also drain more money from communities than they pay.

You want to be here, do it LEGALLY. It is the USA - speak English. Don't like the rules - Leave!!!

We are a multi-cultural nation. US History seems to be taught as British colonial history, which makes us think that the US history is basiclly English history. What history books often forget is that at the same time the British settled in Jamestown (1604), the Spanish set up a permanent colony in St. Augustine, Florida (1605) and in santa Fe, NM (1607). The British wiped out the natives while the Spaniards encouraged crossing the cultural divide. That is why there are 33 Spanish speaking countries today and only a handful of English speaking countries. What gives us the right to say English is the official language? It wasn't the first language, it wasn't even the most prevelant language until only recently. It was the primary langauge outside of Dutch among the 'original 13' colonies, but that is of course if you don't count the Spanish speaking colonies, or the French speaking colonies. Get off you high horses. Are you scared because there are 1 billion spanish speaking people at our doorstep?

We are an English Speaking society. I don't care about the 33 countries that speak Spanish but this country that speaks English. What gives us the "right" to choose English is that it the language that we want and it has served us well for over two hundred years. Again, if you don't like the rules - Leave!!

To continue your ethno-centric rasict remarks in english press one. Para continuar en Espanol aprema el numero dos... I was not born in this country and in fact, English is my fourth language. I studied hard and am now a professional assimilated into this culture, sort of. I will never abandon my ethnicity dispite my race. What you folks tend to forget is that Hispanics are not a race. They are a culture than spans all races. Your nimble little minds can't seem to want to understand that concept, so you lump all Hispanics together. It would be sad if it were the first time I heard it. Unfortunately, the idea of a Master Race seemed to have come up before in history with less than ideal results. I paid $183,000 in taxes last year (state, federal and property combined). I believe I can say this is my country too.

I believe the 'Native Americans' should have adopted this illegal immigration policy back in the sixteenth century... I guess it depends on you definition of illegal!
