Clergy discuss Barack

In case you missed it, here's a link to Sunday's story from my interview with five local ministers, and the mayor of South Coatesville, about Sen. Barack Obama. The meeting turned out to be a frank discussion about race, religion, social issues, and Sen. Hillary Clinton.

And a side note, Obama will be stumping at Great Valley High School on Wednesday. No word yet when -- or if -- Clinton or Sen. John McCain will be making campaign stops in Chester County.

I have enough trouble keeping up with local politics, I don't even get involved with national politics. Whoever wins won't affect me that much, I will still have to get up every morning to go to work and pay taxes!

If Barack or Hillary should win you will be paying a lot more taxes. If you even have a job after their finished raising taxes on everyone. They claim that they will only raise taxes on the rich, but the rich are the people who create our jobs. Higher taxes mean the rich will raise prices or lay off employees. I hope that you can now see that who wins matters to everyone. Please vote.

The democrats definition of rich includes anyone making over $32000 a year. The media fails to tell you that dirty litte fact. Democrats are going to destroy this economy and ruin the job market.

The occupation of Iraq, started by Bush and Cheney, is costing every family about $100 per month. It will cost your children much, much more to pay back the borrowed dollars used to wage this war.
There were no WMD's, no nuclear program and no connection whatsoever to 9/11 in Iraq. But this administration has sacrificed American lives and treasure and convinced many Americans that he did so to bring Democracy to the Middle East. That was, of course, after he couldn't convince anyone that his previously stated purposes for being there were true. Instead of pursuing Osama bin Laden, he went after the weakest of the Middle Eastern countries, declared victory and has continued with a failed strategy with no end in sight except the end of his term. If you are concerned about taxes, think of how much better off you would be if we had not spent that money in Iraq and, instead, helped the American people with jobs, health care and home ownership. How anyone can pump gas every day, read a newspaper or the internet and see the credit crisis, the housing crisis, unemployment soaring, the mortgaging of our childrens future, our indebtness to China and this endless quagmire in the Middle East and still support the Bush agenda is beyond me. Judging from the comments here, however, I think I know where the 30% of the people supporting Bush must live.

You may know where the 30% that approve of Bush live, but I know that you must be one of the 11% that approve of the Democratic led congress.

supporting Bush and voting for higher taxes are 2 differant things, I work, pay my mortgage, fill up my car, pay my student loans, pay for my health insurance, and still have some cash to save, and am in no way wealthy..especially at 26 years old. I dont need the governments handouts or control of my life. Seeing as they run social security, and i will never see a dime of that, i really can't wait till they take over healthcare and ruin it. As for the cost of the war and it'd costing each family $100 per month, stop taking Social Security money out of my check at a rate 4 times that much because i will never see it anyway.

"A democracy will exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves gifts from the public officials. From then on, the public will vote for the politician or political party that promises them the most benefits from the government, resulting in the collapse of the government from excess spending."

If you vote for a Democrat, you may just want to wait till they promise to give you a free plasma TV also... yes, its that silly out there.

If we instituted a war tax, would you support it to fight the war in Iraq? If we reinstitued the draft instead of sending only those who volunteer, would you support sending your sons and daughters to war in Iraq? This is not WWII, the Iraqi's didn't bomb Pearl Harbor or even the twin towers. So why are we there?
Every generation says they won't see any Social Security and not one has been right yet. I guarantee that you will take it when it is offered. Your 26 year-old labor is going to pay for Social Security benefits being paid out today, just as my labor did at 26 years old. That's our obligation under the social pact made when Social Security began. At age 26 you may not need a handout and see yourself as unbreakable. Consider yourself fortunate. How about if you get married and have a disabled child? What if your parents need private nursing care? Or you become disabled? Or you lose your job? Don't ever brag on what you have today - fate can snatch it away in a heartbeat.

My grandmother lived to be 94 and my parents lived well into their 80's. They were all taken care of by their families, not the government. My wife and I are assured that our children will look after us when needed. As for reinstating the draft, I think it should never have been stopped, that's how I got to visit Southeast Asia, and it made me a better man and more appreciative of the great country we call home. We had more KIA's in one month then we had in five years in Iraq. The Democrats under JFK and LBJ started that war. When we left that country in defeat millions of people were killed. I don't wish to see that happen to the people of Iraq or to our great military men and women again. One more thing, the income tax was a war tax to pay for WWI, so we are paying a war tax.

I hope i didnt come across as bragging, sorry if i did. And i am definitly not unbreakable, i worked in the mortgage industry until i was laidoff (3 weeks after buying my house) so i know what living on a shoe string and hoping to make my next payment feels like. I am married and trust me the ability to support my wife and future children is the thing that keeps me going. As for SS, I think the only way to keep it going is to keep raising the % per person put it. I have a MBA in Finance, i understand the workings. I just am afraid of a socialist trend, im not saying it will even come to pass if a democrat is elected, i was just stating that i dont 100% stand behind Bush, heck, i have 3 friends over there now and hope all of them will make it home safely. but i do stand behind my freedoms and a free market society where you make you own destiny via the choices you make. Government control is good when limited, expanding that power can be a scary thing. That was my point of writing, again, i am not perfect, unbreakable or better than anyone else. I am thankful for everything i have every minute of everyday.

Thanks for allowing me to clarify,

So, 11:42, you would be in favor of re-instituting the draft to staff the military to fight in Iraq? If that was done, this so-called war wouldn't last 10 minutes. The protests of the 70% of Americans against our involvement in Iraq would shut it down almost immediately. And I think it was Richard Nixon (a Republican)who "cut and run" in Vietnan wasn't it? So, if Hilary or Barack pull us out of a "war" started by Bush, I guess it's simply a turnabout being fair play.

And by War Tax,I mean an extra tax to "Pay as we go" in Iraq. We are paying nothing towards the Iraq war (yet), it is all on borrowed money, nearly all of which is being borrowed from China, the interest which will be paid by your children and their children and their children. So, if we had to pay as we go through a special "Iraq War Tax", how long would the war last. Again, 10 minutes. Would the American people submit to rationing to "win" in Iraq, like our parents did in WWII. Nope, still 10 minutes. Now if Saddam had actually invaded the US (how ridiculous that sounds), maybe we could justify this idiocy. Or if he invaded Israel (less likely to get unanimous support I bet) maybe one could justify it. But he did nothing and was not connected to 9/11 (oh, the guy who did that is still on the loose, forget him though, he's too hard to find, let's declare war on a really weak army so we can say we actually beat somebody!) This whole administration has been a nightmare, an incursion on human and civil rights, the destruction of our economy, our housing market, the oil markets and our future. January 20th can't come soon enough.

You are right it was Nixon who cut and ran from Nam, and that's one reason he did not earn my respect. But it was LBJ who, because of political correctness, prolonged the fighting. A politician telling Generals how to conduct a war is stupid. Restarting the draft may teach people to remember what JFK said"ask not what your country can do for you ,but what you can do for your country", that is what the Democrats of today are missing. Unlike Vietnam this enemy will follow us home if we cut and run. As for gas prices, if we leave Iraq without an army strong enough to defend itself, we will be paying 8 dollars per gallon. You seem to think that the government can control a free market well it can't , unless your want Communism.
I do not want to be confrontational I only want people to stop and think about the long term effects of allowing the radicals in the Middle East to become stronger. I'm at an age where the future is short, but I hope that I have instilled in my grandchildren that it is honorable to fight, and yes even die for the USA.

Maybe the "tax and spend" democrats are better than the "borrow and spend" republicans.
Iraq is the first war the USA has been involved in where taxes weren't raised to help pay for the war.

My grandchildren will be paying for this war (in many ways). It's time to elect someone who will end the war and have some fiscal responsibility.

House owners are in trouble for borowing more than they could pay back. What happens to a country that borrows more than it can pay back? Whoever becomes president, they have a deep, deep hole to get us out of. Whoever it is, will have to raise taxes just to pay the interest on what we have borrowed during the past 7 years.

What price do you put on the safety of your loved ones and the sovereignty of your country? It seems that all Dem's think about is raising taxes, how about cutting spending? We know the Democrats will raise taxes, but McCain said he will veto any bill containing earmarks. The war in Iraq is costing about 4% of GDP, that is the lowest amount spent on any war the US has been involved in.
