Class Project

I was sitting at my desk Monday evening when I received a phone call from an old friend.
She said "Hey" and asked if I was busy for the next five to ten minutes. Well, considering I'm at my desk, around 7 p.m., and with a few stories to write up before heading home to watch wrestling, I'd say I was busy.
However, I said I was good and asked why. She proceeded to ask me if her son could interview me for a class project. Apparently the project was for Veterans Day, and he needed to ask a veteran a few questions.
Needless to say, I was absolutely touched. It's no secret that I served in the United States Navy, and proud of my veteran status. But after seeing a wide range of veterans every year at various events, I don't appear to be the typical flag-waving veteran like some.
I didn't resemble a lot of the veterans I stood near during the ceremony at St. Ann's Cemetery Sunday afternoon. But that doesn't make me any less of a veteran. It just reminds me that there are plenty of us around, and honored to have a holiday such as Veterans Day.
So her son asked me various questions about my time in the service, where I was stationed, what I liked and disliked about the service.
After ten minutes on the phone with him, he thanked me for answering his questions, and I thanked him enough for interviewing me.
Looking back, the one question he asked that made me laugh was is there anything I would've done differently during my time in the service.
Well, considering this is just a class project, I answered that I enjoyed my time in the service and it was a learning experience.
I traveled to places I never thought I've ever go to, such as Hong Kong, Japan, Africa, Phillipines, and Austrailia. The two weeks in Austrailia are still fresh in my mind, as if they happened yesterday.
There was some politicking in the service, and the uncertainty of being stationed was always unsettling. Not knowing how long you'd stay in one place to the next was awkward at times.
However, it is all a part of serving your country, as it was a great experience. I am definitely proud to be not only an American, but a veteran as well!
I hope this kid gets a decent grade for this project.
Happy Veteran's Day!

Dennis, The fact that you took time from your busy schedule for a child doing a school project is to be commended and thanked. In this busy society today, so very few people are willing to stop and help others. Also, as the daughter of a recently deceased WWII veteran (and a very proud one he was), I would like to thank you for having served our country. Who knows, someday this young man you helped may have to face that challenge and might do it more willingly and wholeheartedly because he was touched by your kindness. Thanks again for serving and a thanks also to all others who have served. Know that you are appreciated! mi
