If only you knew...

Hi Ed, I read about the elderly taxpayer‘s concern about this 35-hour work week for state workers. As a state worker myself, I‘m compelled to reply. The real scam comes when state employees spend those hours shopping on line, surfing the web, or talking to friends on the phone. In order to complete their work assignments they then must work overtime, at time-and-a-half, in addition to the regular salary. Managers are aware of this but do nothing. Fear of the union, perhaps? Some even do it themselves. There is unfortunately no accountability in government offices. If the taxpayers of New Jersey knew the extent of waste in government, we would probably have the tax revolt that is long overdue.
Disgusted
If. If. If. It's always ’if.‘ If we ’knew the extent of waste in government, we would probably have the tax revolt that is long overdue‘? How about you sharing some of that information? Oh, and by the way, speaking of sharing — stop by trentonian.com and go over to the new BackTalk blog. You can leave your own comments about BackTalk callers or my responses. I've gone Hi-tech!!!.

Appalling. But not shocking. Is this really what goes on at all gov't offices? As a taxpayer I am disappointed in any workers who behave like this. My guess is that not all employees goof off that much.

I once worked as a consultant for the DMV. While working there I witnessed some of the most atrocious employee behavior I've ever seen. I actually seen one person sleeping during working hours. I informed the supervisor, her response was a shrugg of the sholders. I also witnessed employees bringing in empty water containers and filling them with the water from the office cooler then take the containers home. Also, one state employee had a little business of selling candy & popcorn during working hours. I can really go on & on. It doesn't help informing the supervisors because they have thier own little thing going. This will continue as long as our politicians give the state unions all the help they need.

Just when you think people cannot get any more clueless! Are these people for real? Tackling your web surfing and online shopping shouldn't be done on taxpayer dollar. Best to keep those activities for home. With speedy computers, it won't eat into your home free-time too much. Put your job first. Each person has to be responsible for their own actions because bosses cannot watch workers' moves every second. Is it too much to ask that over-taxed citizens don't have more of their money wasted?

As a state employee I, too have seen people asleep at their desks. This is a common occurance for certain people and supervision is well aware of it yet nothing is ever done. They don't even bother waking these people up. Most state offices have "sign in" sheets which makes it real easy for employees to cheat on the amount of time that they actually spend on the job. Arrive late, long lunch, leave early.....just write down what ever you want. Hell, throw in some OT while you're at it. No one seems to care. As long as these practices are allowed to continue, the state of New Jersey will face financial difficulties and our taxes will continue to rise.

Sounds like you shouldn't be gambling.

Let me guess - you were playing "Let It Ride" on 2:30 on a weekday afternoon, with your official State vehicle parked in the casino garage?
