A typical liberal tax-and-spend non-solution

Maybe you just can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Trenton's school department is so screwed up, so much on the brink of failure, that the state has come out and said it is on the verge of seizing control from city officials, just like it did in Camden.

Parents and the public have lost confidence in the integrity of school administrators in the wake of the Sherman Avenue school report card tampering scandal.

And what is Mayor Doug Palmer's solution?

Extend the school year and the school day.

And of course, you'd have to spend big bucks on more staff, and of course, you'd have to pay the teachers' union through the nose for cutting into their lengthy summer vacation by a few days.

Another tired, unoriginal, tax-and-spend solution that was predictable from a leader of establishment liberal Democrats who know no other solution than to throw money and more government bureaucracy at every problem.

How could keeping students longer in schools that are failing them every day possibly be the anwer to Trenton's problems?

Mayor Palmer always manages to bring the same solution to every problem. Spend more money. Not that this idea isn't great, it's just not great for Trenton Public Schools. Indeed why throw more money into a consistently failing system. Nothing has happened in Trenton since Palmer became mayor, except consistent failures. Not only within the school district, but his own administration in city hall. Yet he continues to overlook these failures, spinning his wheels and resting on his self-made laurels until he feels Hillary will come calling.
I personally don't think she will call on someone to do a big job, when he couldn't handle a little one in all these years.

The world is indeed flat! My mom used to tell me to eat everything on my plate because there are starving children in India and China that want my food. Today, people in India and China want my job! It is time to change the education policies in this country. We based our education cycle on the farming practices of Puritans in the 17th century. It is an ancient practice that can't compete with 21st century economies. The USA ranks 161st in the world in terms of total hours of education to our students. Look at the booming economies in Europe and Asia and you typically see 280 days of school time and 10 hours a day! How is a Trenton high school graduate supposed to compete with an Inidan, Chinese, German, french, whatever, when they are looking at the same job? Palmer is right! Break the NJEA up and reform our education to meet the needs of the 21st century or we will be a third world country in the 22nd century!

I live in Lawrence and am pleased with the education system here. It's incredible the difference a few miles makes. Trenton is literally a short walk away, but it is a world away in terms of what is provided to citizens.
I now work out of state, but I used to work in Trenton and was amazed at the missed opportunities to make the city better.

Mayor Palmer is clueless about education. He is not an educator and remember he gave Lytle total autonomy to run the schools. If he knew anything about education he would know that education is systemic meaning that all of the stakeholders work together collaboratively to run a school. The school board is the superintendent's boss and not the other way around. the board is the governing body thus Palmer should appoint some people who genuinely care about education instead of the deadwwod that he keeps appointing to rubber stamp everything. If Palmer has no ideas about how to improve the schools he should inquire and ask the mayors across the country when he travels instead of spending time posing for magazines and appearing on talk shows and attending music awards.
