Picking up litter at Paxon Hollow

On April 22, 2009, Mrs. Puchalla's advisory class from Paxon Hollow Middle School wanted to raise awareness for littering around their school. They have noticed an abundant amount of trash around the building. For example, they noticed the gym bleachers, the hallways, courtyards, athletic fields, and the front of the building were full of litter. The class's mission was to try and start cleaning up the excess trash along the inside and outside of their building to promote more school pride. They used the model, "Don't be a litter bug" on the t-shirts they made, hoping to intrigue the eyes of other students. They also made posters to spread the environmental word, and have already collected several bags full of trash. The advisory class will continue to spread the environmental cause throughout the rest of the school year both inside and outsideof the school.

RHS Students Apply Social-Networking Skills in Classroom

On May 6, Radnor High School students joined more than 200 high-school students from 36 school districts in Harrisburg for Classrooms for the Future Student Capitol Day. These students shared innovative projects that were created using technology provided through the Classrooms for the Future grant.
The Radnor Education Foundation has helped further supplement Radnor Township School District's technology with its own grants, helping more Radnor classrooms receive laptops, interactive white boards and collateral materials.
RHS CFF English teacher Abby Daniels and CFF technology-integration coach Andrea Brothman applied for the chance to travel to Harrisburg to meet with legislators to showcase the great learning experiences that are taking place in Daniels' classroom. While there, the group from Radnor met with state representatives Bill Adolph and Brian Lentz.
Daniels' two courses, Global Issues and World Literature, integrate technology to enhance and amplify classroom learning. With the help of Brothman, she created an online social network - a Ning - for each class.
Students have spent the year engaging in literature responses through the Ning site, which allows for online blogging, discussions, and multimedia sharing. To maintain student safety, the site is secure - the teacher retains control over who can access it and what images, videos and discussions are posted to the site.
Some of the 21st-century skills honed by integrating this technology are creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, research and information fluency, critical thinking, problem-solving, productivity and digital-age literacy.
Integrating social networks in classrooms builds on students' familiarity with connecting with others online, but places it in an academic context. In the Global Issues class, an integrated English/social studies course, each student used Ning to blog reflections on chapters of A Fine Balance by Rohinton Minstry. Students responded to classmates' posts with clarifying questions, making connections among the plot, history, politics, geography and themselves. Any controversial topics discussed online were then addressed in class, allowing everyone to share thoughts and opinions. This activity allowed students to process the information they were reading and allowed them to gain understanding of the author's purpose, use of literary devices, and cultural mores.
Student thinking is deepened through this interactive network as they are compelled to digest, analyze and synthesize what they read, rather than read a work quickly without purpose. A written response, as opposed to oral, allows students the time to adequately reflect and formulate questions.
Blog responses require analysis, reflection, textual connections and prediction that demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Hey, a turkey

Little 5 year old Ryan Millay of Green Lane, with his eyes aglow, told me and said he just saw a turkey! Puzzled, I walked up my drive and there at the front door was a wild turkey!!!

The bird kept Green Lane residents on their toes all day long and in awe as he grazed each yard, enjoying the sunshine yet shy with the spectators. He spent the entire day on our block strutting from yard to yard gazing into windows & doors and flying over fences.

We were expecting a gaggle any moment but all we had got were giggles from kids and adults alike!

We were giving thanks to this bird for the excitment he brought to Green Lane!

Budding Journalist

Holy Child Academy Third Grader Bobby Straub enjoys writing so much that he has started his own weekly newspaper, The Daily Straub. Peppered with anecdotes from home and school, Bobby writes articles about the week's events and shares his opinions on various issues. "I started the paper to keep my family in the loop," Bobby explained. "I wanted them to know what happened in school for both me and my brother, Sam." In "publication" for the past few weeks, Bobby said that the best part of writing the paper is giving it out to his parents and teachers. "I've added a 'Comments' section to the paper for my readers to give me feedback - so far everyone has really liked it, and that makes me feel good!"Bobby's Third Grade teacher, Ms. Hoffman, encouraged him to write the paper. "When I realized that he was doing this on his own, I asked Bobby to bring in a copy for me to read each week," said Ms. Hoffman. "Bobby has a real interest in journalistic writing, and practicing each week with his own family newspaper helps to foster this talent." Another benefit to the classroom is that The Daily Straub has inspired other children in the Third Grade to start writing their own newspapers!Holy Child Academy is an independent, Catholic, co-educational school for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. St. John Chrysostom Youth Group helps hungry

When Easter approaches at St. John Chrysostom Parish in Wallingford, members of the high school youth group know it’s time to go hungry.
Again this year, Operation Growl brought members of the youth group together for a 24-hour fast – all part of an effort to raise the students’ awareness of the plight of the hungry, and to raise money for local food programs.
And how do they pass the time? This year, the students spent Saturday, March 15, helping the Delaware County Literacy Council. The students packed books from DCLC’s Lansdowne office for shipping to DCLC’s main office in Chester. The group spent five hours packing boxes and shredding files. By the end of the day, they had filled 25 boxes with books and many trash bags of shredded paper.
Students who participated in the project were: Jenna Bates, Kelly Carey, Alex Cocco, Samantha Daley, Katie Endres, Matt Lucci, Richard Scott, Susan Seitz, Clare Sherry, Stephanie Smedile, Molly Tareila, Joyce Theur, Grace Theur and Natalie White. They were chaperoned by Joe Lucci, Karen Theur and Father Jim Bajorek.
In addition to their volunteer work, the students asked parishioners at St. John’s to sponsor their participation in the program. Their goal was to raise $9,000.

The four faces of Edgar

Here are four generations of family members with the name Edgar Osborne Moore. The oldest Edgar (called "Bud") will be 89 years old on March 25. The youngest Edgar Osborne Moore is my grandson (called "Quinn") and is ten years old. It's a great photograph and thought it might be used for a human interest story or just a photograph with a header that you think would be appropriate. The photograph was taken at a recent holiday gathering at my son's home in VA ("Ned").

Edgar Osborne Moore ("Bud")
Edgar Osborne Moore III ("Ed")
Edgar Osborne Moore IV ("Ned")
Edgar Osborne Moore V ("Quinn")

The Moore family has lived or owned property in Wallingford since the 1870's.

Media group rocks Senate

Business was far from usual in Harrisburg this month when a group of "Miracles" from the Media Theatre rocked the grand Rotunda with their music, and impressed the State Senate with their diverse abilities.
The State Street Miracles, a performance troupe of 11 adults with developmental disabilities, traveled to the state Capitol and performed for the esteemed members of the legislature as part of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
The mission of the Miracles is to spread the joy of music and dance while increasing awareness of the talents and abilities of people with disabilities. While many non-disabled advocates travel to Harrisburg to speak for people with disabilities, these performers are self-advocates and ambassadors who inspire people with their abilities.
The Miracles traveled to Harrisburg on March 10 as the guests of State Sen. Ted Erickson, an ardent supporter of people with disabilities. Their trip allowed them to take their message beyond Delaware County to a statewide audience.
Family members and representatives from the Media Theatre joined the Miracles as they toured the resplendent Capitol, performed in the Rotunda, and were recognized on the Senate floor when Sen. Erickson presented a Resolution declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

"It is my honor to be part of the leadership here at Riddle Memorial Hospital and my service on
The Riddle HealthCare Foundation Board is only a small part of what FMFCU does to ensure that Riddle brings the finest of care to our community" remarked Unangst. "I personally see this as an investment that makes perfect sense."
