Lefty Dreams of Show Trials

The always reasonable Stuart Taylor explains why the left's demands that war crimes charges be brought against Bush Administration officials are woefully unreasonable.

What they are, though Taylor is too polite to say, is hysterical.

Taylor was and is against the use of waterboarding...

"But," he writes, "the critics are deeply misguided to call for criminal investigations of people who did their best to protect the country in dire times. The process would ruin lives and tear the country apart. And there is no evidence that any high-level official or lawyer acted with criminal intent."

Ruin lives? Tear apart the country? Woo HOO! As far as some on the left are concerned, America is so corrupt and hateful it is hardly worth saving. Let the show trials begin.

Oh Canada! How Could You?

Our Human Relation Commissions are better than their Human Relation Commissions. But not by much.

Thank God (and, of course, the founders) for our First Amendment.

Bring Out Your Dead

Iran is claiming to be digging 320,000 graves to bury the enemy dead in case of an invasion.

This has to be seen for what it is, an effort to frighten the world's anti-war political left and to get them to agitate for "peace."

According to reports, Iran will could have a nuclear bomb in as little as a year. Israel, if not the United States, will not allow that to happen. Iran's grave rattling is just that. How many "enemy soldiers" died when Israel took out Syria's weapons facility last year? Not too many, as we recall.

Iran's mullahs will be furious when all its hard and expensive nuclear work goes up in smoke. But the free world can not afford the danger of a nuclear-armed jihadist state.

They've been warned. The graves, if they are actually being dug at all, will be filled with Iran's poor nuke workers, cannon-fodder in the Mullah's on-going war against the West.

Friends of Obama

Hey, Father Phleger is back. He of the observation that "America is the greatest sin against God" and a committed Obama supporter.

He says it won't be his or his colleague Rev. Jeremiah Wright's fault if Obama fails in bid for the presidency. He's right. It will be Obama's fault -- for associating so closely with a couple of anti-American lunatics for so long.

To Be Or Not To Be? Not To Be

We've become a "Nation of Hamlets," writes Victor Davis Hanson.

Money Q:

The causes of this paralysis are clear. Action entails risks and consequences. Mere thinking doesn't. In our litigious society, as soon as someone finally does something, someone else can become wealthy by finding some fault in it. Meanwhile a less fussy, more confident world abroad drills, and builds nuclear plants, refineries, dams and canals to feed and fuel millions who want what we take for granted.

Barack Obama: Hypocrite

Ruth Marcus has it right. The political consequences of Obama breaking his promise to take public financing will be negligible. The voters and his certainly his supporters won't care.

But enough with Obama presenting himself as a different sort of politician.

He's just like the rest of them. He'll break a campaign promise, even a written pledge, if there is a political advantage to be had in doing so.

Obama Lied, Public Campaign Finance Reform died. Big deal. But so did his holy reputation for straight-shooting honesty.

Planet of the Apes

Spain grants great apes rights to "life and freedom."

"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project.

Meanwhile, in Africa, tens of thousands of our "evolutionary comrades" better known as human beings, are being slaughtered by a ruthless dictator named Robert Mugabe. What do our Spanish brothers propose to do about it?

Nothing. And neither do we. Apparently, we've evolved past such humanitarian interventions.

There They Go Again!

The liberals on the Supreme Court rule that the rape and torture of an 8-year-old girl is not a severe enough crime for the citizens of Louisiana to impose the death penalty on the rapist, her stepfather.

For it or against it, it should be the business of the people of Louisiana to decide.

Rape used to be a capital offense in many states. Not anymore. Funny how so many more are committed now. Or rather, not so funny.

UPDATE: "The opinion reads more like an out-of-control legislative debate than a constitutional analysis," said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican. "One thing is clear: The five members of the court who issued the opinion do not share the same 'standards of decency' as the people of Louisiana."

E-Mails of the Day

(This e-mail has been edited to withhold the name at the writer's request.)

Mr. Spencer,

Thank you for supporting Nicholas' grandfather against our senseless
government officials. My sister-in-law was bludgeoned to death in
Delaware County (last year) and there have been no
charges filed against anyone in her violent murder. They should be
using their resources to track down true criminals, murderers, instead
of contributing more pain and suffering to what appears to be a decent,
law-abiding family. We live in Montgomery County but everyone I speak
to is appalled by the situation. There are way too many intentional
crimes being committed to waste time punishing a decent citizen for an
accident... one that he will never forget nor forgive himself for, as
you noted in your column. Please continue to use you column to speak
out for this family.

Regards,

Thanks, I will.

Then there was this:

Hey Gil,

I have never in my 62 years written to a publication to express my opinion.
However as a grandfather of seven, having made numerous trips to various day care facilities, I feel compelled to comment on your column of 6/25/08.
Count me among those with a boggled mind. Unless Grandpa was suffering from Alzheimer's or some other memory altering disease( in which case , shame on his parents for entrusting their son with him) , I can not imagine how this man strapped this innocent child in his car seat and then promptly forgot about him.
No matter how you try to rationalize this, the bottom line is, Nicolas is dead as a result of Grandpa's forgetfulness.
Giving Grandpa the benefit of the doubt, you might even say that he involuntarily killed Nicolas. So involuntary manslaughter makes perfect sense to me.
I believe that he should now be a man and own up to that fact. He should take responsibility for his actions; plead guilty and throw himself upon the mercy of the court.

Dennis J Hugues

As I said, reasonable people can disagree on this.

McCain Plays the Blame Game

John Stossel lets McCain have it but good. When McCain admitted he didn't know much about economics he wasn't kidding.

According to Gov. Ed Rendel, this never happens in Pennsylvania but...

"In March, Philadelphia elections officials accused the nonprofit advocacy group (ACORN) of filing fraudulent voter registrations in advance of the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. The charges have been forwarded to the city district attorney’s office."

Dr Beckel and Mr. Hyde

Bob Beckel makes a good argument for Obama selecting Hillary as his running mate. But then you get to the very bottom of the column and you get the argument as to why Obama should take any Beckel advice with a shaker of salt.

"Bob Beckel managed Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign."

Enough said?

World Fiddles While Zimbabwens Die

Bret Stephens suggests what to do about the genocidal regime of Robert Mugabe.

Money Q:

"A solution for Zimbabwe's crisis isn't hard to come by: Someone – ideally the British – must remove Mr. Mugabe by force, install Mr. Tsvangirai as president, arm his supporters, prevent any rampages, and leave. "Saving Darfur" is a somewhat different story, but it also involves applying Western military force to whatever degree is necessary to get Khartoum to come to terms with an independent or autonomous Darfur. Burma? Same deal.

"International relations theorists, including prominent Obama adviser Susan Rice, justify these sorts of interventions under the rubric of a "Responsibility to Protect" – a concept that comes oddly close to Kipling's White Man's Burden. So close, in fact, that its inherent paternalism has hitherto inhibited many liberals from endorsing the kinds of interventions toward which they are now tip-toeing, thousands of deaths too late."

But it's too close to what the Bush Administration did in Iraq to Saddam's regime. So you know, forget it.

Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran

John Bolton predicts Israel will attack Iran's nuclear facilities between our presidential election and inaugeration.

Sounds like a plan.

He also predicts Arab leaderswill be secretly happy about it. Maybe. But most Muslims won't be.

If and when it happens, look for Iranian-funded terrorist violence to increase in Iraq. America's troops there will come under greater threat and some attacks. Fortunately, they can defend themselves pretty well.

The question is if Obama wins the presidency and things heat up will he turn tail and run out of Iraq or will he tough it out like McCain probably would. My guess is he'll bail. Just like Reagan did in Lebanon and Clinton did in Somalia.

War Crimes at Haditha: Nevermind

Not satisfied with disgracing himself simply as a former Abscammer, Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha assumed the guilt of a bunch of Marines for war crimes at Haditha.

The case has gone bust as Mac Owens details here.

The Democrats Cravenness on "Torture"

The Democrats and their cohorts on the political left have accused the Bush Administration of being pro-torture for waterboarding three al Qaida members, including Khalid Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

(See this edit in today's WSJ.)

The rough interrogation of these terrorists led to the prevention of other attacks and the saving of American lives. But Democrats want to punish the government officials who permitted these information gathering techniques.

The Democratic congress could move to outlaw waterboarding but it does not. Why? For fear that the public would blame them if there is another terrorist attack. In any case it would make them look soft on terrorism and national security, which they are.

The left boldly claims that America is "less safe" today than it was before 9/11. But there hasn't been another al Qaida-type terrorist attack on the U.S. mainland in 7 years, thanks, in part, to the aggressiveness with which the Bush Administration has attacked the terrorist havens overseas.

I think that success in prevention has led too many Americans to fall into a false sense of security. But we'll see this fall. If we elect a man as inexperienced and seemingly naive about foreign policy as Barack Obama (it took Hillary Clinton to expose him) I think we'll regret it.

In any case, the "torture" narrative put out there by Democrats is completely out of sync with common sense and common morality. It is perfectly justifiable to inflict pain on a terrorist to glean information of an imminent terrorist attack. Those who say such techniques don't work have to explain why they worked so well and so quickly in the cases of Khalid Mohammed and others.

NSA experts are on record saying that the information waterboarded out of these three "saved lives."

High ranking Democrats from Jay Rockefeller to Nancy Pelosi were informed that such techniques were being used to extract information and didn't object at the time. Only now that it is politically expedient do they wish to hold their political rivals' feet to the fire. It doesn't get much more craven than that.

Recall the book and the film "The Day of the Jackel," in which a member of anti-Charles de Gaulle group is captured and brutally tortured for information about a suspected assassination plot. All that his French interrogators get out of him is the whispered word "Jackel," the code-name of the assassin. But it leads to the saving of their president.

Granted that was fiction. But the use of very rough interrogation techniques even by democratic governments was (and is) not. They are only justifiable in the rarest and most extreme circumstances. But they are justifiable, experience and common sense tells us so.

Again, if the Democratic left thinks such techiques should be outlawed, let them propose legislation to that effect. Let them be specific about what torture is, why waterboarding is torture, and pass a law against it.

They won't. Watch and see.

Good News for the McCain Campaign

"In a bitterly divided 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday in Boumediene v. Bush that alien enemy prisoners, waging a jihad against the American people and captured by our military in a war authorized by Congress, have a right — under our Constitution — to petition our courts for their release. So doing, the Court invalidated laws it had only recently implored Congress to enact, laws that provided these prisoners with generous protections never previously extended to enemy operatives in American history."

Read the the whole thing.

This is not an argument that Obama wants to have, yet he's saddled with it.

Wolcott and The Crush

Jamie Wolcott writes about the "man crush" that the media has on John McCain in Vanity Fair.

Clever. If a male member of the media expresses admiration for the Republican candidate, he can be dismissed as somehow effeminate.

Clever or weird? You be the judge.

But does this mean Jamie has a man-crush on Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas Zuniga.

"Markos does not traffic in tweedy ironies. He makes himself plainly understood, no matter how many heat shields he melts."

Sounds like Wolcott had his heat shield melted.

We Are Winning In Iraq and Faster

It's time for war critics and skeptics to eat a little bird, writes Arthur Herman.

In the meantime, auditioning for the VP slot, Sen. Joe "Pick Me, Pick Me" Biden, a voter for the war, continues to heap blame on Bush.

"I vastly underestimated the total incompetence of this crew," he told the Washington Post.

Total incompetence? Mistakes were made, yes. But total incompetence? We haven't had another terrorist attack on the U.S. homeland in 7 years. Al Qaida in Iraq is almost destroyed and on the run around the world. (See above.)

In the meantime, the left's mantra: "Bush Lied, People Died" is taking a bit of a beating from the center-left. Read WaPo's Fred Hiatt's analysis of the Rockefeller report.

Drilling Democrats on Oil

Americans didn't care that environmentalists and Democrats prevented oil drilling when gas was below $2.00 a gallon.

Now that it is $4 and climbing, they do. Voters want oil companies to be able to explore for oil in Alaska and elsewhere. They understand the greater the supply the better chance of oil prices holding steady or coming back to earth.

Republicans are starting to exploit the Democrats' kowtow to the environmental lobby.

The Road to Liberia

Oh, I forgot to post today's print column. Here it is.

Check it out. It's good.

About That Race Speech...

Juan Williams says Obama has to give another -- better and more honest -- speech on race. Specifically, taking personal responsibility for hanging out so long with a racial dividers and demagouges like Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Michael Phleger.

Money Q:

"To deal with this controversy effectively, Mr. Obama needs to give another speech. This time he has to admit to sins of using race for political expediency – by knowingly buying into divisive, mean messages being delivered from the pulpit. He has to say that, as a biracial young man with no community roots, attaching himself to Rev. Wright and the Trinity congregation was a shortcut to move up the ladder in the Chicago political scene. He has to call race-baiting what it is, whether it comes from a pulpit or calls itself progressive politics. And he has to challenge his supporters, especially his black base, to be honest about real problems at the heart of today's racial divide – including out-of-wedlock births, crime, drugs and a culture that devalues education while glorifying the gangster life."

I don't know if it will help Obama, but it is good hear Williams, a liberal and a black man, speaking truth to power.

Addiction, Disease, and Stealing

Herb Ackley, the husband of the woman who stole more than a half a million dollars from the Ridley school district has been arrested and charged with conspiracy in the theft.

Together they blew the money at casinos, receiving thousands of dollars in freebies and other comps.

At his wife's sentencing, Ackley testified that he had no idea where all the money that they were gambling came from. He is either willfully stupid or lying.

The DAs office thinks it's the latter and hence the charges against him.

At Carol Ackley's sentencing, (she got 4-20 years) Asst. DA Greg Hurchella asked Ackley during all those trips to the casinos "Did you have a good time?"

Ackley said he did.

Throwing herself on the mercy of the court, his wife claimed to be in the grips of a gambling addiction. Her lawyer argued that the casinos were more to blame for the theft than she was.

Judge Jim Nilon disagreed.

For a couple in the grips of a terrible addiction, they sure seemed to be having a lot of fun.

Not anymore.

This Was A Moment, Alright!

Now that Obama has won the Democratic nomination for prez, he sez:

"We will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless..."

(We've never in this country taken care of the sick or provided good jobs for the homeless? No wonder his wife has never been proud of America before.)

"... this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal..."

(Moses only parted the Red Sea. Obama has stopped ALL the oceans from rising up and cured the planet of -- what? Leprosy? The Obamessiah is here.)

"... this was the moment when we ended a war... "

(Does he mean, the Iraq War? Isn't it still going on? Aren't our troops still killing terrorists and protecting civilians? Oh, he means his ascedency to be Commander and Chief will begin our long, slow retreat in defeat and shame.)

"... and secured our nation and restored our image..."

(among al Qaida types for being a "weak horse" with no staying power in the long, hard fight against them)

"... as the (their) last, best hope on Earth."

Wow. What a speech!

Who Has Obama's Ear on Iraq

Iraq War Veteran and embedded reporter Pete Hegstreth chides the presumptive Democratic nominee for not visiting the troops in Iraq since 2003.

Money Q:

"Even more astonishing than Mr. Obama's absence from Iraq, however, is the fact that he has apparently never sought out a single one-on-one meeting with Gen. Petraeus. The general has made repeated trips back to Washington, but Mr. Obama has shown no interest in meeting privately with him. It's enough to make you wonder who exactly Mr. Obama listens to when it comes to Iraq?"

Let's see, Obama will meet with America's enemies Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. But not Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki or America's top general in the field.

Who is he listening to? Could it be Rev. Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright, still?

A Modest Energy Solution

Scott Ott (aka Scrappleface) "reports:"

The global warming bill, up for debate in the Senate this week, includes a little-known provision to reduce the nation’s collective carbon footprint, and to make the U.S. energy-independent by replacing the burning of petroleum products with the burning of paper currency.

Under the terms of the legislation, Congress would require that businesses and individuals burn money to run factories, heat homes and propel motor vehicles.

“Money is a relatively clean-burning, renewable resource,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA. “If we need more, we don’t have to go crawling to the Saudis, we simply mandate that our own people send it to us.”

Father Phleger's Sin Parade

Staunch Obama supporter, Father Michael Phleger, has put on leave by the Catholic Church for saying from the pulpit "America is the greatest sin against God."

According to news reports, "The activist and priest said he meant to say racism was the greatest sin."

Does that make America the second greatest?

We'll all have to try harder.

UPDATE: In any case, it seems Father Phleger has his theology all wrong. When it comes to "shalt nots," racism doesn't even make the list.

Phleger appears to be confusing Democratic secular theology for the real thing.

A Buzz Cut at Guantanomo

The former warden of the Guantanomo Bay detainment center for terrorists and illegal combatants, Mark Buzby, says the facility is really a model prison.

Democrats and the media look away. No sense letting a few facts get in the way of your America-Mistreats-and-Tortures-Its-Prisoners narrative.

Demanding Action on Climate Change

Mark Mellman at The Hill says the public wants action on global warming.

Well, that's what they say in polls. But if action means, higher taxes in the way of higher prices for gasoline and heating oil, we'll just see how popular that is.

The public also wants lower gasoline prices. How these two public wants will be reconciled is a political question.

The solution currently being offered by our "leaders" in Washington is the Carbon Cap and Trade bill, the greatest government power grab in history. (See below)

Policiticians' attempts to hide the astronomical costs from the public won't last long but they don't have to. Just a decade or so, way past the next election cycle.

In the deep, dark recesses of the public mind, we understand that. Which is part of the reason why 80 percent of the public have lost confidence in our political leaders.

The rest are fools.

Growing Up on Climate Change

Holman Jenkins writes that $135 a barrel oil is the beginning of the end for the climate change movement.

Interesting take.

Money Q:

Growing up would also mean realizing that climate activists are in danger of losing all political credibility as they become handmaidens to corrupt pork bonanzas for the corn ethanol lobby and Silicon Valley alternative energy impresarios. Look no further than the climate bill being debated on Capitol Hill this week. The only real question it poses is how much Congress will spend on climate pork while having no discernible impact on climate.

The Innocents

A third child, a 5-year-old, comes forward to accuse psychologist Jerry Lazaroff of improper and illegal touching. The charges sound a little thin. And the case is starting to sound more and more like "The Children's Hour."

Two girls, 5 and 7, were interviewed by police after they complained to an adult known to both of them and police were contacted.

The 7 year-old is more of a witness to what happened to the 5 year-old, says DA Mike Gallantino. More accusations of behind tapping and improper "tickling."

Lazaroff, in part, invited these suspicions by engaging in some sort of "play therapy" that wasn't witnessed by others.

But some of the accusations seem to turn on interpretation and possibly misunderstanding. In addition, it is and extremely rare for anyone to be attracted to both little boys and pre-pubescent girls. The second child to come (or to be dragged) forward is a 7-year old boy.

In any case, Lazaroff's career, if not his life, is ruined. Let's all hope that he is not only found guilty, but that he is truly guilty of the charges against him. And that this isn't a case of grown-ups overreacting to the whimsies of children.
