Golden Globes Wrap-Up

Golden Globes Pictures, Images and Photos
Last night Hollywood did the red carpet proud on its second biggest night of the year. (The Oscars, of course, being the biggest night.) After scaling down last year's broadcast, and that's putting it mildly, due to the writer's strike, the Hollywood Foreign Press' Golden Globes shined bright with tons of celebrities dressed to the nines!

Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner bringing home four trophies, including Best Picture Drama, while HBO's John Adams took home four in the television categories. Kate Winslet won two awards for Best Actress Drama (Revolutionary Road) and Best Supporting Actress (The Reader). The late Heath Ledger got a standing ovation from his peers when he was awarded the Best Supporting Actor globe for his stellar performance as The Joker. And Mad Men and 30 Rock won Best Drama and Comedy, respectively.

No, I'm not going to bore you with all the winners. For a complete list and lots more photos visit www.goldenglobes.org

So on to the real reason I look forward to the Golden Globe Awards -- the FASHION!! For me, it's all about those glorious two hours prior to the actual show, when we get to see the celebrity arrivals, ooh and ahhh over what everyone's wearing and hear the snarky comments from the "interviewers."

Salute to Joan Rivers: Without you babe, none of this red carpet stuff would be so largely broadcast. Say what you want about the woman, but all the credit for red carpet coverage goes to her! I miss you Joan, you were the most entertaining red carpet afficionado ever! Isaac Mizrahi runs a close second!

Anyway, for me, it's all about the arrivals! So here's just a few of my thoughts, along with some pics ...

Worst Dressed: Renee Zellwegger. I hated this dress! I think it's horrible! I like Renee, and she usually does the red carpet proud. But this dress just made her look frumpy and old -- and we expect that of Meryl Streep, but not from you babe! Honorable Mention to Best Actress-Comedy or Musical winner Sally Hawkins, who wore an equally drab black number that looked like it came off the same rack as Renee's.

Renee Zellwegger

Drew Barrymore -- loved this dress! I'm pretty sure Miss Jay on E! said it was a John Galiano original and it's just beautiful. Loved the hair too. Miss Drew looks stunningly feminine in this soft pale shade. And boy did this dress flow nicely. She floated down the carpet in it!

Drew Barrymore

Eva Longoria-Parker -- Lady In Red!! This dress was spectacular! The color, the mermaid shape and the fit were absolutely perfect! It helps when you're as perfectly shaped as Mrs. Parker too. Anyway, I think she looked stunning!

Eva Longoria

Eva had my best dressed until this lady arrived -- Jennifer Lopez!! Va-Va-Voom!! This shimmering gold number had people reminiscing about that certain green Versace dress she wore to the Grammys a few years back (probably longer than I think). Again, stunning! This backless wonder also featured a plunging neckline and only Ms. Lopez could pull it off. WOW!

J Lo dress

What did you think? What were your faves, please let me know ...

On to the show! I actually had a few highlights I'd like to share, beginning with Sting. I saw him on the red carpet with Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise and only recognized him when I saw his wife Trudy Styler -- WTH? Gone is the blond hair, now a darker brown with a full goattee as well. Hey, he looked good.

Colin Farrell, while presenting, blamed his sniffles on a cold -- "It's a cold, not what it used to be," joked the randy Irishman, referring to his alleged drug past.

Which reminds me, I must see Colin's film In Bruges, since he did win his own Globe last night for Best Actor-Comedy or Musical. Who saw that coming? Certainly not him. However, I remember Colin used to be pretty critically acclaimed, before his public partying persona got bigger than his acting roles. It was nice to see him cleaned-up last night, and he also gave a very heartfelt acceptance speech.

Tina Fey gave the best acceptance speech, getting a few laughs while bashing her online haters!

Steven Speilberg got a special Golden Globe and during the video presentation of his works I learned something new. I don't think I ever knew that little Stevie directed the legendary Joan Crawford in the feature film version of Night Gallery. It's one of my all-time faves. Joan plays a blind woman who pays a drunken bum Tom Bosley for his eyes. Of course, she will only be able to see for a few hours after the operation and low-and-behold when the bandages come off -- there's a blackout! Hilarious!

Sigourney Weaver should have worn a bra. That's all I'll say about that ...

Mickey Rourke, another one whose acting was heavily over-shadowed by his personal demons, won Best Actor-Drama last night and tripped on the steps to the stage. Isn't that why we watch these shows -- just hoping to see someone trip on their way up the stage! Anyway, his speech was pretty entertaining as well, thanking everyone from his dog to Axl Rose, and saying "balls" twice! Way to go Mick! He also thanked The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky for casting him despite not being able to get any much backing by using Rourke. To which Aronofsky gave him the finger from the audience! Oooops, Standards & Practices missed that one!

Kate Winslet & Leo Dicaprio

And hey, didn't Kate & Leo look cute on the red carpet together. I think it was sweet that Titanic's star-crossed lovers arrived and did press together, just as they did 11 years ago. Kate's hubby, Revoluntary Road director Sam Mendes joined his wife inside and both were on hand to help her compose herself after her double wins! BTW, I couldn't find a full photo of Kate's gown, but I did think she looked exceptional in her strapless black sheath. I don't know what her secret is, but she just keeps getting better looking!

All in all a pretty fun and glamorous night. The Golden Globes are always more relaxed than the other, stuffy awards galas. Now it's on to the SAG Awards!

But first up, all the entertainment shows tonight will be featuring all the fashions (which will be copied by the end of the week) and after parties. I think I look forward to the night after wrap-ups more than the actual awards. And don't miss E!'s Fashion Police tonight at 10 p.m. America's Next Top Model and E! correspondent Miss Jay will be on hand with Project Runway's fave pixie Christian Siriano to dish on who wore what! I'll make the popcorn ...

So, I watched M. Night Shyamalan's latest The Happening on DVD last night. I'll save my review for the end of this entry, since it will contain SPOILERS!

Chef Rocco
Due to the debates, there wasn't much else on last night, but I will give you the requisite Dancing with the Stars update if you, like me, can't bring yourself to waste the time watching it, but still want to know ... celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito came in last place. However, due to the medical-related dismissal of Misty May-Treanor, he was allowed to stay on until at least next week. The Olympic champion went on to have surgery yesterday to repair the Achilles tendon she ruptured last Friday while rehearsing for the show. http://abc.go.com/primetime/dancingwiththestars/index?pn=index

So, on to tonight: Over on Bravo at 9 p.m. it's the first part of a 2-part season finale for Project Runway. As those of you who have followed this show in prior season's we all know that tonight's episode will feature fashion guru Tim Gunn visiting the remaining contestants at their homes/studios and critiquing their clothing lines so far ... don't expect anyone to be eliminated tonight. For more info visit http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/season/5/index.php

The Critical Gunn

I'm looking forward to tonight's season premiere of that wicked little cartoon South Park over on Comedy Central at 10 p.m. Can't wait to see who Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be victimizing in this episode! You can be sure Kenny, Stan, Kyle and Cartman will be out in full force lampooning some cultural phenomenon! For more on South Park or to watch previous episodes visit http://www.southparkstudios.com/

And on ABC, Dirty Sexy Money will continue to intrigue and disgust viewers with the second installment of Season 2 at 10 p.m. Unfortunately, I missed last week's season premiere and was later told by coworkers that it was a doozy! Starting out with a birthday party for Darling family attorney Nick George and ending with the arrest of the Darling's matriarch for the murder of Nick's father, Dutch George! And a whole lotta mess in between ... remember, this is the show I compared to Dynasty and Dallas last week.
So if you're a fan of over-the-top evening soaps, you don't want to miss this. For more info or to watch last week's ep or read a recap, visit http://abc.go.com/primetime/dirtysexymoney/index?pn=index

The Darling clan

Of course, I'll be watching my Sons of Anarchy over on FX at 10 p.m. (Dirty Sexy Money will have to wait). I'm really beginning to look forward to this Sopranos-style show about a motorcycle gang in Charming, California. I won't go on, because I have every week. If you're not already watching, you might want to give it a shot. Tonight's ep re-airs immediately after at 11 p.m. For info visit http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/soa/#Nav/Homepage

Tomorrow morning Leonardo DiCaprio makes a rare appearance on live TV on NBC's Today Show (7-11 a.m.). Lucky Leo, not too comfortable with the whole interview process, will be promoting his new flick with Russell Crowe (who's been on every talk show this week) - Body of Lies. Early reviews are really good for this Ridley Scott-directed flick. Check for Leo early, usually between 7-9 a.m. I know I'll be taping ...

Leo

And I thought I watched a lot of movies: Suresh Joachim of Toronto, and Claudia Wavra of Germany, claim to have broken the world record for continuous movie watching, after seeing 57 films in 123 hours in a plastic-glass house in New York's Times Square.
A Guinness World Records spokesman said it appears the non-dynamic duo have broken the record, but said it will take two weeks to officially verify.
According to the rules, each movie had to be viewed until the last credit rolled, and competitors couldn't divert their eyes from the screen. They were allowed 10-minute breaks between movies. I can honestly say that I'd never make it!

King of All Media
Belated congratulations to the King of All Media Howard Stern on his wedding (yes, I said Wedding) to long-time girlfriend Beth Ostrosky last Friday. Odd enough that Stern, a man known for pressing the sexual envelope on his highly-rated radio show, is married again, but wait till you hear the guest list: Donald Trump, Billy Joel, Chevy Chase, Tommy Mottola, Joan Rivers and Barbara Walters (Yes Barbara Walters!) were all on hand at New York's trendy Le Cirque restaurant to see the nuptials. Barbara Walters - really?? Did she attend on purpose or just happen to have reservations that night ...

And speaking of Walters - it seems that Rosie O'Donnell is ready to come to TV. Rosie, who hasn't done a TV show since leaving Walters' The View suddenly over 18 months ago, will present Rosie's Variety Show live from New York on Nov. 26 on NBC.USA Today speculates the NBC special is a taste of a new show to start early next year.

The Happening Review: SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't seen and are planning to watch, don't read any further ...

So I watched The Happening. And the best thing I can say is that it's only 91 minutes long. Don't get me wrong, I'm a usually big fan of M. Night Shyamalan's movies. I LOVED The Sixth Sense, was perplexed by Unbreakable, and really impressed by Signs. However, The Village was ruined for me when I figured out the "twist" in the first 3 minutes. Lady in the Water I waited until DVD to watch. It was OK. Towards the end, I really started to like the story, but not interested enough to see it again.
Which brings me to The Happening. I already stated previously that I wasn't interested enough to go to the theater to see it. And I'm glad I didn't. The film starts out eerily enough, with people all over NY's Central Park suddenly being overcome with desire to kill themselves ... the panic spreads to Philadelphia, then throughout the Northeast. At first, everyone's fearing the worst -- terrorism. But we all already know from his track record, there's more to this Shyamalan tale.
Like most of Night's films, the central story tends to revolve around human relationships, rather than the supernatural. And in my opinion he's done this much better in prior films (Sixth Sense and Signs, particularly). Mark Wahlberg does fine with the material given, but what happened to John Leguizamo? He's a much better actor than portrayed in this flick. Night, as usual, makes a cameo, this time as the voice of Joey, who keeps calling Wahlberg's wife, played by the very blue-eyed Zoey Deschanel. Betty Buckley turns in an absolutely frightening performance, but that's based more on her looks (which I hope can be attributed to the hair/make-up department), rather than on her performance.
Anyway, it all boils down to what I thought was a completely ridiculous premise - here comes the SPOILER:
Plants. Yes, plants. It seems that plants feel that we humans have done enough damage to the planet and are taking out their anger on us by releasing toxins into the air. The toxins just happen to make humans extremely suicidal. So wherever there's a large gathering of humans, the plants react this way. And, in the end, "the happening" in The Happening ends as suddenly as it began and Mark, his wife and his best friends child are all spared their suicidal fate. However, it's just beginning in Paris ...

Project Runway and other news

So, who watched Project Runway last night? What a great episode! We're down to the final four, with only three supposed to make it to the big finale at Bryant Park in NYC. Of course, we already know that six of the remaining contestants actually got to show their collections during New York's prestigious Fashion Week. However, only 3 were actually in competition for the grand prize.

Kenley
Last night's episode was full of drama, drama, drama ... and lots of crying. All that's left are Jerell, Korta, Leanne and the villainess Kenley. And she was in full bi-otch mode last night (and to think, she used to be my fave)! The other contestants effectively turned on her when she forgot one of her bags from MOOD and no one would lend her any of their tule ... horror of horrors. Fortunately, Tim Gunn came to the rescue and told her that if her receipt from the fabric store had the tule on it, she could go back and pick it up.
The contestants were taken to the New York City Botannical Gardens, where they were given the opportunity to photograph all the plants and flowers and come up with some sort of design for a evening gown inspired by nature. (On a side note, as the Garden Gal, I'm proud to say that I have most of the plants that were shown on camera.)
Things came to a head after the runway show, when the judges really didn't care for any of the designs and admitted that this was the hardest elimination so far. Borrowing from last season (and I swear I didn't see this coming), the judges decided to let all of them go home and create their collections, with one being eliminated at the beginning of the finale. Thus not allowed to "show" their collection at Bryant Park. Which brings me back to what I mentioned above ... everybody, plus the previous two eliminated contestants still got to show their collections ... what do you think?

In other Project Runway news: A New York judge has agreed to toss out a lawsuit brought against the show by a couple of fashion industry veterans who claimed Heidi Klum and others ripped off their idea for the show. Klum, herself, was deposed and said the show resulted from several brainstorming sessions by its creators.

However, there is still yet another lawsuit being decided right now in the New York State Supreme Court between show producer Harvey Weinstein and his Weinstein Co., which owns the show, and NBC Universal. The jist of the suit is to prevent a $200 million deal between Weinstein and Lifetime from going forward until NBC's breach-of-contract lawsuit is settled, either in court or out.
Weinstein is apparently still miffed with Bravo for "copying" the formula his company created for Runway and then adapting it for its other reality shows Top Chef and Shear Genius.

That hasn't stopped Season 6 from rolling though. Plans are still on the books for it to debut on Lifetime sometime in January. As usual, for more on PJ visit
http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/season/5/index.php

In the meantime, Lifetime is producing Blush: The Search for the Next Great Make-Up Artist, hosted by Vanessa Marcil with InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein and makeup artist Joanna Schlip serving as judges.

Project Runway Season 4 (with our fave winner and fashion pixie Christian Siriano) arrives on DVD Nov. 4.

And speaking of Top Chef: Season Five is cooking in New York City. The show was filmed over the summer, with contestants living in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn. One challenge took place in August at Le Bernardin, whose Chef Eric Ripert is a frequent guest on the show.

Eric Ripert (had to add photo for my friend Elf!)

On TV Tonight: Thank goodness for the Vice Presidential debate... I don't have as much to watch.

Project Runway's style guru Tim Gunn kicks off Season 2 of his popular series Tim Gunn's Guide to Style tonight at 11 p.m., following another abusive episode of Tabatha's Salon Takeover (I can't get enough of this show,
http://www.bravotv.com/Tabathas_Salon_Takeover/season/1/index.php )!

The Very Wicked Tabatha Coffey!
This season Tim gets a new cohost, stylist Gretta Monahan, who replaces model Veronica Webb. I liked this show when it started out last season, mostly because I really like Gunn. However, I think it would be better served in a half-hour format, without the gratuitous reveal at the end with all the family members of the lady who got the makeover.
For info visit http://www.bravotv.com/Tim_Gunn/season/2/about/index.php

Survivor Gabon contestants
Tonight also brings another sure-to-be-interesting episode of Survivor: Gabon. I can't wait too see what happens between the Pretty Tribe (Kota) and the Stupid Tribe (Fang, pronounced Fong). And, who knows, maybe there'll be more parts "revealed" during one of the challenges ... visit
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor/

Dean and Sam
Over on the CW at 9 p.m. on Supernatural, sexy, demon fighting brothers Sam and Dean will flashback in time and meet with their grandfather ... Attention X-Files Fans: played by Agent Skinner's Mitch Pileggi.

Visit http://www.cwtv.com/shows/supernatural

Duff Goldman and his merry cake-making crew have another new Ace of Cakes at 10 p.m. over on the Food Network. Check it out at http://www.foodnetwork.com/ace-of-cakes/index.html

And I'll be tuning in to HBO at 10:30 p.m. for a behind the scenes look at director Ridley Scott's new flick Body of Lies. I can never turn down an appearance of delicious Leonardo DiCaprio. And this one features my fave gladiator Russell Crowe too - nice eye candy!

In Other News - Brace Yourselves!

VH1 has suspended production of Season 3 of Brett Michael's Rock of Love!! Try not to do anything rash ... I told you before that I'm actually drawn to this trainwreck-of-a-show! I had no idea they were actually making another season, due to debut in January!
Anyway, a truck delivering sound equipment for the Rock of Love Bus apparently swerved across Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois and plowed into an SUV, killing two Southern Illinois University students last Friday. The driver of the truck, who is not an associate of Michaels, fell asleep at the wheel. Michaels has since contacted the families of the deceased and offered his condolences. See, he's not that bad, afterall ...

Weekend Wrap-up

Sorry to have left you hanging yesterday, but there was sooo much on TV Sunday night that I needed an extra night to catch up!Which, of course, now leaves me behind on Monday night ...Anyway, let's begin with the Amazing Race (Sunday, CBS, 8 p.m.)! God I love this show!

Season 13 contestants
Eleven teams of two, each with preexisting relationship, started the race at the Los Angeles Coliseum for Season 13. First stop was Salvador, Brazil, where the teams had to choose a local vending cart, wheel it thru the narrow streets of Salvador to a popular plaza and deliver the cart to Indio in exchange for their next clue. After an overnight hold, the teams encountered their first Detour, choosing between the Hard Way Up and Soft Way Down. In the first, teams had to climb up a stone staircase on their hands and knees, while the second task revealed teams climbing to the top of a 240-feet building and climbing down a cargo net on the outside!Siblings Nick & Starr came out as Team No. 1, while older, hippy couple Anita & Arthur arrived at the Pit Stop last and were thus eliminated. This season is shaping up to be as controversial as past ones ... with Starr already putting the moves on Dallas (of the mother/son team). And tempers are flaring ... looks like next week will be pretty interesting ...To watch this episode or for a detailed recap, visit http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/
At 9 p.m. Sunday night I couldn't decide whether to watch HBO's vampire drama True Blood or Showtime's season 3 opener for everybody's fave serial killer Dexter. So I pointlessly tried to watch both (you know, just flicking between the two every so many minutes). While I love Dexter, the season opener was just basically set-up, and shortly into it, True Blood captured my full attention with an episode that finally got interesting! This week's ep featured heroine Sookie Stackhouse getting her vampire-love interest to take her to the local vamp bar "Fangtasia" so she could question some fellow bloodsuckers regarding the murder of her coworker. What made this interesting was the we finally got to meet the "leader" of the local vamps, hot, hot, hot Eric!

It was only just a short tease though, but Eric's brief performance was enough to keep me interested and coming back for future eps.
http://www.hbo.com/trueblood/
Back to Dexter - I think my sister (who hasn't watched before, but tuned in just to see Dexter's new boss, played by her fave Jimmy Smits) summed it up best ... "he didn't kill anybody this week. That was disappointing."http://www.sho.com/site/dexter/home.do
Following True Blood at 10 p.m. was another great episode of HBO's current biggest hit Entourage. Poor Johnny Drama, not only is his younger brother the "hot one" and he recently ruined his hot French romance, but now his costars on his first hit in ages made an ass out of him on The View! It was hilarious. Definitely a show worth tuning into. http://www.hbo.com/entourage/

Luckily, Showtime repeated the 10 p.m. season 2 debut of David Duchovny's Californication, so I switched over there at 10:30 p.m. for what was instantly a reminder of why I like this show! When we last saw Hank Moody at the end of the first season, he was driving away from his ex's wedding with their daughter, only to have Karen (his beloved ex) run out and jump in the car too.So Hank and Karen are back together, but things aren't all rosy. The episode started out with Hank getting a vasectomy and then having a hard time abstaining ... you know, till things healed ... it didn't help that during an evening out with his agent Charlie (Evan Handler) and his wife Marcy, they got invited to a sexually loose party in the Hollywood Hills. As usual with Hank, he means well, but things get hilariously out of hand and he ended up in jail by the end and Karen's not willing to bail him out this time ... For more information or to watch this episode, visit http://www.sho.com/site/californication/home.do
Yeah, I also watched Desperate Housewives and wasn't too impressed. But for now I'll stay tuned, mostly because it's all the talk on Mondays around here. At the behest of a coworker, I taped but didn't watch yet, Brothers & Sisters. I know it's a good show, but being that's it's already in the third season, I don't know if I can get into it at this point. Especially with so much else to watch.

And, I'm just about caught up on BBC America's popular new teen drama Skins. This racy British export is the perfect antidote to all the Gossip Girl, new 90210, One Tree Hill, Friday Night Lights dribble on American TV right now. I love it ... of course, you can probably look forward to some Americanized version of this one soon. But I recommend watching the original. Look for more information here http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/328/index.jsp
Still haven't watched Mad Men yet, maybe tonight ... probably not though, because I'm clearing the evening's schedule to watch the DVD of Iron Man. Saw it in the theater and loved it!! And I didn't know anything about iron man going into it. Maybe I'm just really pleased to see Robert Downey Jr. doing something good again!
So I pretty much missed Monday night television. Saw a little of the Lost marathon over on Sci-Fi. And I wouldn't miss The Big Bang Theory - love those guys (CBS 8 p.m.). I'm about done with Dancing with the Stars (taped it but couldn't bring myself to watch it this morning).

Everybody's Favorite Gladiator
However, one bright spot in last night's entertainment came later on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I had put a reminder on the TV that Russell Crowe was going to be on promoting his new Ridley Scott-directed Body of Lies with Leonardo DiCaprio (two of my faves, can't wait for this one!) Interestingly enough, it seems Crowe has a solution to all our financial problems in the US. Since the government wants to "lend" $700 billion to "save" the financial crisis, and there are roughly 300 million American citizens, Crowe's revelation would be to give $1 million to every citizen, allowing them to pay their mortgages and pump money back into the economy. I'm all for it. Shame he can't run for Prez.
On TV tonight: Back for another thrilling episode surely will be Fringe at 9 p.m. on Fox. Dancing with the Stars results show airs at 9 p.m. on ABC.
Over on Bravo at 10 p.m. an all new Rachel Zoe Project airs. I just got into this show over the weekend after a coworker recommended it. I like it! Rachel Zoe is a stylist-to-the-stars and its compelling to watch how her mind/business works. Most of the time, she's running (with her 2 assistants) all over Los Angeles, trying to find the perfect "hero" dress for some celebrity client. For more info visit http://www.bravotv.com/The_Rachel_Zoe_Project/season/1/index.php

And in the trainwreck category, MTV debuts Paris Hilton's New BFF reality competition at 10 p.m. I might actually have to check this one out. I admit, I'm a closet fan of VH1's Flava of Love and Rock of Love. I just can't seem to turn them off - like watching a trainwreck!
